Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs

The battles that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens used to have on "Hockey Night in Canada" were legendary. When the Leafs suit up for a Saturday home game, the best online betting sites take notice. While the Canadiens and Leafs still hate each other, the newest Toronto rivalry is with the Ottawa Senators. There was a long time when Leafs and Senators games did not mean a lot in the standings. With both teams battling for the top of the Northeast Division, every game counts.

The sportsbook experts have been watching the Ottawa Senators slowly building itself back up into a winner over the past few years. Players like Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Neil, who have been with the franchise long enough to see good times and bad times, are key building blocks for this successful team. The Senators look to be a playoff team again this season, and the Leafs is looking to take advantage of a shortened season to possibly get into the playoffs by avoiding the late-season let-down that the Toronto Maple Leafs have become so known for over the past few years.

Ottawa Senators

The resurgence of the Senators begins and ends with goaltender Craig Anderson. The per head sportsbook experts had the Senators as a decent team with lousy goaltending for a long time. The franchise made some personnel changes over the last couple of years, but none as big as bringing in Anderson. He was a little shaky in the playoffs last year, but it was his play that helped propel the Senators into the playoffs in the first place. As this shortened season gets underway, Anderson is dominant once again and the Senators is winning. Ottawa will be a very fresh team in the playoffs this year and that will make things extremely interesting.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The sports experts are still finding it a little difficult to take the Toronto Maple Leafs seriously. The Leafs got off to a great start last season and then fizzled after the All-Star break. This year, there will no All-Star break and the Leafs can avoid the late-season collapse by playing a shorter season. The problem for Toronto is that the playoffs will start at around the same time that the Leafs would normally start falling apart. If Toronto can build up some momentum, then that may help.

The Bottom Line

These two teams do not like each other and that always makes for a fun game to watch. Since this game actually counts for something, that makes it even more fun. The Leafs still seem questionable when it comes to consistency. The Senators play a fluid game that is always focused on the other team's goal. That is what will push the Senators past the Leafs in this game.

Saturday's NHL Betting News and Notes
By Covers.com

Take a look at our quick-hitting betting notes for all seven games on the NHL schedule Saturday.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Florida Panthers (+106, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Anders Lindback (TB), Jose Theodore (FLA)

The Lightning have let a tremendous 6-1 start fritter away with a six-game winless streak, including a 4-3 home loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday. Tampa Bay, which still leads the league in scoring, has only one victory in five road games and has given up 12 goals its last three contests. Florida has lost just once in regulation (3-1-3) since falling at Tampa Bay 5-2 on Jan. 29. The Lightning are 5-0 in the last five meetings.

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (-134, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Craig Anderson (OTT), Ben Scrivens (TOR)

Jason Spezza (back), Erik Karlsson (Achilles) and Milan Michalek (knee) are all key cogs out for the Senators, who have dropped five of their last seven games (2-4-1). The Maple Leafs saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 setback to Carolina on Thursday. Home has not been a comforting place for Toronto, which is just 2-4-0 at the Air Canada Centre in 2013. The Maple Leafs haven't fared well versus Ottawa at home either, losing four of five (1-3-1). The road team is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens (-140, 5.5)

Probable goaltenders: Brian Boucher (PHI), Peter Budaj (MTL)

Philadelphia squandered a two-goal lead in Friday's 5-3 loss at New Jersey, while Montreal is coming off a successful trip to the Sunshine State, where it posted a shootout win over Tampa Bay and an overtime victory over Florida. The Canadiens have gone beyond regulation in three of their last four games after having eight of their first nine contests settled in 60 minutes. The Flyers have dominated the all-time series of late, winning three straight meetings and six of the last seven.

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders (+102, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Johan Hedberg (NJ), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI)

The New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders certainly are getting to know each other during the early portion of the abbreviated NHL season. The Atlantic Division rivals will meet for the fourth time in 2013 on Saturday. New Jersey, which has won both road contests in the set, has more victories on Long Island than coach Jack Capuano's club this season. The Devils continued their torrid February by posting their sixth win in seven outings on Friday, a 5-3 triumph over Philadelphia. The Islanders also were victorious in their last outing, rallying from a two-goal deficit to snap a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over the rival New York Rangers on Thursday. The Devils are 6-1 in the last seven meetings in New York.

Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators (-144, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Viktor Fasth (ANA), Pekka Rinne (NSH)

Predators’ netminder Pekka Rinne has recorded back-to-back shutouts for the second time in his career and has three in his last four contests. Rinne hasn't allowed a goal in 137 minutes, 41 seconds. Anaheim posted a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville when the teams met at the Honda Center on Jan. 26. Viktor Fasth, who boasts a perfect 7-0 record after last night’s 5-2 victory over Detroit, made 19 saves - and stopped all three shooters during the bonus format - to secure his first victory. The under is 10-1-2 in the Predators’ last 13 home games.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Phoenix Coyotes (-183, 5)

Probable goaltenders: TBD (CBJ), Mike Smith (PHX)

Columbus managed only 13 shots in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Kings in Los Angeles and avoided being shut out with just 2:25 remaining in the third period. The Blue Jackets were seeking their first winning streak of the season but instead lost for the fourth time in five contests (1-3-1). Phoenix is hoping to find its offense as it returns home from a 2-1-0 road trip. The Coyotes scored a total of three goals on the trek. Columbus has lost five of its last six visits to Phoenix and the home team has taken six of the last seven meetings between the teams.

Colorado Avalanche at Edmonton Oilers (-139, 5)

Probable goaltenders: Semyon Varlamov (COL), Devan Dubnyk (EDM)

The Oilers have scored three goals or less in all but one of its 13 contests this season. But their best offensive output came against the Avalanche on Jan. 28, when they posted a 4-1 home victory. Colorado halted a three-game winless streak Thursday, when it posted a 4-3 shootout triumph over the Wild in Minnesota. Much like Edmonton, the Avalanche have had difficulty putting the puck in the net. The club has scored three goals or less in each of its last five games and 10 of its 12 contests this season. The home team has won six of the last seven meetings in the all-time series.
