Free Picks: Service Plays for Thursday November, 22

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Thursday November, 22

Chris Jordan

My comp winner for Thanksgiving is going to be the Gonzaga Bulldogs (-12) over the Clemson Tigers. This is not going to be an easy chore for the Tigers, as the experienced Zags are already 3-0 this season with a trio of routs.

Behind Elias Harris' 16 points and career-high 18 rebounds, and freshman Przemek Karnowski's 20 points, Gonzaga is coming off a dominating 96-58 win over South Dakota at the McCarthey Athletic Center this past Sunday. Even more impressively, quite frankly with this game, was how the Bulldogs won the battle of the boards, 58-24.

And while Gonzaga’s 38-point win over South Dakota was the third-lopsided score in as many outings this season - after beating Southern Utah by 38 points and West Virginia by 34 - the Bulldogs have climbed to 17th in the latest Associated Press poll.

The Bulldogs are hitting 54.3 from the field and 44.2 from beyond the three-point arc.

Though the Bulldogs lost seniors Robert Sacre and Marquise Carter, they still returned 74.7 percent of their scoring this season.

I'm all in with Gonzaga, cause even though the Tigers have opened their season 2-0, I'm a little more impressed with Gozaga's wins than I am with Clemson's over Presbyterian College and Furman.

3* GONZAGA

Scott Delany

My free pick run is now at 38-18-2 after a push last night in college basketball on Brigham Young. Today I want you playing the Duke Blue Devils over the Minnesota Golden Gophers, as Coach K will have his troops ready for the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.

I'm usually wary about what I'm playing when the Golden Gophers are taking court at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. And the past several years with Tubby Smith coaching them, I've really seen them become quite valuable at home. But today, this one is in the islands and I don't think the Gophers are going to have what it takes to run with the Devils when it's said and done.

Duke is 3-0 on the year after an 88-67 win over Florida Gulf Coast, which led in the game 30-29, before the Devils went on a 30-0 run over a 7:43 span to seize control of the contest. They're pretty used to winning this early in the season, as evidenced by their long-term record in the month of November. Duke has won 52 of its last 53 games during this month, dating back to the start of the 2004-05 season. The Devils are also 37-4 in neutral site contests since the start of the 2008-09 season.

Take Duke today.

Chuck O'Brien

My free play is going to be out of the 2012 DIRECTV Classic in Anaheim, California, as I delve into this clash between the Xavier Musketeers and Pacific Tigers. Though this game is in Pacific's home state, south of Stockton, I have to side  with the Muskies in this one.

Just something about preseason tournaments that gets this program fired up.

Xavier won the Puerto Rico Classic in the 2008-09 season with wins over Missouri, Virginia Tech and then-No. 13 Memphis and the Chicago Challenge in the 2007-08 season with wins over Southeast Missouri State, Coppin State, Kent State and then-No. 8 Indiana.

Now it comes into this one with a 3-0 mark after a 61-59 win over Robert Morris on Saturday that completed a sweep of the season-opening three-game homestand. And you can credit Xavier’s balanced attack for the early success, as five players are averaging double figures in scoring: seniors Travis Taylor (14.3 ppg.), Jeff Robinson (13.3 ppg.) and Brad Redford (10.0 ppg.) and sophomores Dee Davis (15.3 ppg.) and Justin Martin (12.7 ppg.).

Pacific is 1-2 on the season after a 69-67 loss to Oral Roberts on Monday, and even though the Tigers are familiar with the Anaheim Convention Center - where they're 15-12 - they won't be able to contend with Xavier.

Lay the chalk.

Texas/ TCU Under 56.5: The Longhorn defense is finally playing like they have been expected to this year as they have allowed just 15.3 ppg in their last 3 games. At home this year the Longhorns have been solid defensively, allowing just 386 ypg and 24.4 ppg. The TCU defense has not been its normal stingy self, but they still have allowed just 326 ypg and 24 ppg on the year. On the road they have allowed 368 ypg, but just 23.4 ppg. Very solid defensive numbers considering they play in the high powered Big 12. The Offenses have been explosive at times this year, but the defenses will come to play and that should keep this on in the low 50’s at best.

DALLAS -3.5 over Washington: Last week Washington had a good game defensively vs an Eagles offense that can make any defense look good these days. Washington will not have that luxury in this one. The Skins are 29th in the league vs the pass allowing 289.2 ypg and they will be taking on Dallas' 7th ranked passing offense that has put up 284 ypg on the year. At home the Dallas pass offense has put up 330 ypg, while the Skins defense has allowed 292.8 ypg on the road. The Skins offense has been very good this year, and they have put up 25 ppg on the road this year, but the Dallas Defense has been very solid at home allowing just 282.5 ypg and 23.3 ppg. The Dallas offense vs Washington's defense gets the big edge here, as I just don't see Washington's offense going hog wild on this Dallas defense that has played very well at home. Look for a desperate Dallas team to take this on by a TD.

Detroit/ Houston Under 49: Last week Houston got into an unexpected shootout with the Jags, but I don't expect that to happen here. Their Defense was shredded by the Jags last week, but prior to that game they allowed more than 17 points just twice on the year. This is a talented defense that will bounce back from last weeks rough showing. Overall on the year Houston has allowed 299 ypg and 18 ppg overall, while on the road the have allowed just 256.8 ypg and just 13.8 ppg. Detroit does put up 401 ypg and 23.6 ppg overall, but at home they have averaged just 356 ypg and 22 ppg. The Detroit defense does give up 24.6 ppg, but just 328.1 ypg, which is 10th in the league. The can be run on a bit, allowing 114.1 ypg (16th), but the Lions have the 8th ranked passing defense, allowing just 214 ypg. At home Detroit has been even stingier allowing just 290 ypg overall, including 182 ypg through the air. Houston is primarily a running team and that is good news here cause it will eat clock. They do average 29.3 ppg overall this year, but just 23.5 ppg on the road. The Detroit defense is very underrated this year while the Houston defense will bounce back from a rough showing last week. I expect a good amount of running and ball control time consuming drives in this one, which should eat clock. Houston's road games have average just 37.1 ppg, while Detroit's home games have averaged 44.8 ppg. I expect no more than 42 in this one.

Drexel +7½ -109 over Saint Mary’s
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Dragons lost their first two games in overtime against Kent State and Illinois State then beat Penn by two. That's not a great start but it allows us to take back an inflated number here. Drexel was robbed of an NCAA bid last season and brought back four starters from that 29-7 squad. That team absolutely destroyed foes on the glass and owned a hefty advantage from 3-point range as well (37.8 percent shooting on offense, 29.0 percent allowed). Expect Drexel to increase its intensity against the Gaels in this opening round of the Anaheim Classic
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
St. Mary’s comes in with a 3-0 record but not one game remotely resembled a quality matchup. The Gaels lost their best rebounder from a season ago in Rob Jones and they’ve found nobody to replace him. The Gaels continue to play one of the easiest non-conference schedules year after year. The result is a misleading won/loss record and it doesn’t prepare them well for tough games against quality division opponents like Gonzaga and BYU. This is another talented opponent that can not only stay within this range but can win outright.

Northern Iowa +8½ -105 over Louisville
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Another neutral site games sees the Panthers of Northern Iowa taking back too many points against the #2 team in the country. The Cardinals were 103rd in offensive efficiency last season and while they've looked better this season, the opponents have been Manhattan, Samford and Miami (Ohio). UNI offers a stingier D and will provide Louisville with its first real test of the year.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Panthers return four of their top six players. So far we've seen a huge upgrade from Deon Mitchell, who has increased his scoring from 7 ppg to 17.7. UNI also crushes teams on the boards and as a result of their active rebounding, they’ve scored 72 points or more in all three games (3-0) they’ve played this year. Once again we get inflated points with unranked versus ranked and will gladly scoop them up.

VCU +123 over Memphis
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
On a neutral floor in the Bahamas, we give the unranked Rams an excellent chance to defeat these Tigers. Memphis is ranked in the top 20, but VCU may actually be the better squad. When playing ranked against unranked there is usually a premium to pay and this one is no exception. The Tigers were a popular team last year, ranking 21st in offensive efficiency but a pair of lacklustre wins against North Florida and Samford might be more telling than most think. Memphis is not the same team without the departed Will Barton and Wesley Witherspoon.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Rams are as active as ever on defense, leading the country in steal percentage. Briante Weber is a defensive dynamo off the bench with 10 steals in three games despite playing just 19.7 minutes a game. Juvonte Reddic, at 6-foot-9, has emerged as a low-post threat and VCU is shooting tons of 3-pointers while thwarting opponents beyond the arc. Memphis' 3-point defense has been absolutely dismal in those first two games (38.1 percent of opponents' points, 16th-highest in the nation) and that’s something the Rams are sure to exploit. Upset alert is on.

Wunderdog

West Virginia at Marist
Pick: Under 137.5

Both teams can play defense and are on outstanding runs UNDER the total. The Mountaineers are on a 6-2 run UNDER the total, while Marist is on a 4-1 run UNDER. West Virginia (0-1) will want to get back to playing defense after getting bombed by Gonzaga. Bob Huggins is a coach who has always demanded great defense, so this is an excellent bounce back spot for the West Virginia D. And their offense wasn't in gear, as West Virginia shot only 21% in the first half, making 5 of 23 shots while committing 15 turnovers. The Mountaineers were only 1-of-13 from 3-point range. The UNDER is 6-2 in the Mountaineers last eight non-conference games. Marist is no offensive dynamo, shooting 40% as a team and scoring 57, 60 and 67 points in three games (61.3 points per game). Play the UNDER.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Thursday November, 22

Bob Balfe

Houston -3.5 over Detroit

The Lions Offense just does not have the depth this year to spread the ball around and make big plays.  We all know who the ball is going to today.  Calvin Johnson is the man, but the Houston Defense will keep a good eye on him.  Detroit does not have much of a running game and I just don’t see them cracking this Houston Defense or being able to handle the 3-4 defense.  The Texans are stacked on both sides of the ball and obviously will not take the Lions lightly after last weeks scare.  Take Houston.

Redskins +3 over Cowboys

First are foremost the NFL has a superstar that they want to showcase today to million of viewers sitting around the TV with their family.  It is good for the NFL for guys like RG3 and Luck to shine.  Its sells a lot of jerseys and that is what the NFL is really all about.  Money!  Dallas just does not have the offensive line or running game to be competitive this year.  This team is also thin at wide receiver and I just don’t see much scoring.  This team has an easy schedule from here on out and I think will make a late playoff push in the NFC East when they get healthy.  The Cowboys have talent, but injuries are hard to overcome.  Washington has a very good offense that will find away to put up points.  The Redskins Defense is nothing to brag about, but I think its one of those games that the Dallas Offense just does not have the man power to click and put up points.  Take Washington

Jets/Patriots Under 48.5

In the earlier meeting the Patriots got a kickoff return for a touchdown and Gronkowski snagged two touchdowns.  The Pats also got themselves a safety.   Gronk is out today which hurts redzone offense and I really am not counting on special teams TD’s or safeties.  For the most part Brady had an average day while Sanchez had a career day and he still lost.  The Patriots have a banged up offensive line and this could be a game the Jets steal at home, but I just don’t trust this team at all.  New England now has a really good cornerback in Talib from Tampa and the Jets just do not have the skilled receivers to move the ball up and down the field.  I don’t see this game being high scoring at all.  Take the Under.

TCU +7.5 over Texas

Both teams are very young with a lot of first time starters.  The only thing that impresses me about either team is the TCU Defense which has so many young faces, but still are playing very well.  The real key to this game lies with a man who wont be on the field playing and that is head coach Gary Patterson.  This guy is a football genius that will find away to get to the Texas Quarterback.  The Longhorns are so thin at linebacker and have defensive line issues that I think TCU will be able to move the ball even with a young QB.  Trevone Boykin has proven he can pickup big road wins.  This should be a great game and I think it comes down to the wire.  Take TCU.
