STARS

— Tomas Vokoun, Panthers, made 47 saves to lead Florida to a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

— Kari Lehtonen, Thrashers, stopped 41 shots in Atlanta’s 5-3 loss at Detroit.

— Keith Ballard, Panthers, had three assists in Florida’s 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

OUCH

Blues goalie Manny Legace left after one period Friday night with a hip injury that occurred when he slipped on the carpet placed on the ice for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who dropped the ceremonial first puck before St. Louis lost 4-0 to the Los Angeles Kings. Legace described the injury as a strained left hip flexor. He said he won’t play Saturday when the Blues host Florida, but wasn’t sure if he’d miss any additional games.

OUCH II

Rangers coach Tom Renney was hit on the head by a stick and briefly lost consciousness during the second period of New York’s 3-1 win at Columbus on Friday night. He was taken to the dressing room and didn’t return to the bench, but did watch the second half of the game with team medical personnel. He was hit by the stick of Columbus defenseman Rostislav Klesla midway through the second period when Klesla was hit by Ryan Callahan.

OUCH III

Philadelphia center Daniel Briere will be sidelined up to a month because of a torn abdominal muscle. Briere, who signed with the Flyers as a free agent last year, is scheduled to have surgery Saturday. He felt something amiss in his groin during the Flyers’ 7-6 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.

ONE DOWN

Mike Richards had a career-high four assists and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils 6-3 on Friday night, becoming the last NHL team to break into the victory column this season. Martin Biron had 23 saves as the Flyers (1-3-3) ended a skid that tied their longest victory drought at the start of the season. They also were winless in their first six games in 1999-00, posting an 0-4-1-1 mark before also winning in the seventh game.

BIG GOAL

Florida’s Richard Zednik picked up his first goal Friday night since he sustained a life-threatening neck injury in Buffalo last February. Zednik poked a rebound through Evgeni Nabokov’s legs to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the first period.

SPEAKING

“She’s been pretty good for our game. I’m starting to like her more and more. No grudge.”—St. Louis goalie Manny Legace, who injured his hip when he slipped on the carpet placed on the ice for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Saturday’s Best NHL Bets
COVERS.com

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders

The Islanders are 0-2 since starting goalie Rick DiPietro returned from injury, but the two losses are hardly his fault. New York’s main problem is a minimally-talented group of defenseman.

“We’re asking a lot of our penalty killers every night,” winger Bill Guerin told the New York Post after losing 5-3 to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. “It’s not easy to do. It’s a problem we’re going to have to address.”

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are coming off a disappointing loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens were outplaying the Canes for the better part of the game but Carolina still took a 1-0 lead into the third period. Pittsburgh opened the floodgates with four goals in the final 20 minutes en route to a 4-1 home win.

With a strong group of leaders like captain Rod Brind’Amour in Carolina’s locker room, the Canes should out motivated and finish on top of the lowly Isles.

Pick: Hurricanes -130

Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks

Both of these Canadian clubs have had a rash of bad news recently.

The Canucks are shuffling their forward lines after losing high-priced free agent Pavol Demitra for a month. They called up Jason Krog and Kyle Wellwood to try to improve on a power play that’s converted just one of 11 opportunities.

As for the Oilers, they dropped their last two games after winning their first four. Goalie Mathieu Garon had his first poor performance of the season allowing four goals Thursday night against Colorado.

Edmonton beat writers described the Oilers as a tired group after arriving in Denver late Wednesday night from Chicago.

Garon should bounce back with a solid outing and goals are always hard to come by when Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo is between the pipes.

Pick: Under 5.5
