Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf News and Notes

Filly & Mare Turf: 1 ¼ miles(T); $2 million; 3up(f&m); Friday, 5:35 p.m. on ESPN2

The History

Outstanding turf distaffers such as Soaring Softly, who won the inaugural running in 1999 and 2001 heroine Banks Hill have made this a star-studded event. Last year, the great Ouija Board became just the seventh horse in the history of the Breeders’ Cup to win an event twice, having taken the 2004 renewal as well.

The Best There was nothing Mauralakana could do about her runner-up finish in the G1 Flower Bowl last out. The fractions were ridiculously slow over the yielding course and it was going to be awful tough for her to make up any ground. Before the Flower Bowl, she won four in a row, including the G1 Beverly D two back at Arlington.

Halfway to Heaven ships in from Europe for the powerful O’Brien/Coolmore tandem and has won three of her last four starts, all G1’s. When she does lose, it’s to the likes or Arc winner Zarkava and B.C. Mile choice Goldikova.

Wait a While will look to run her record to a perfect 4 for 4 over the Santa Anita lawn as she’s already a two time winner of the G1 Yellow Ribbon. She’s also a big fan of this distance, sporting three wins and a third from four lifetime starts going 1 ¼ miles.

The Rest
Communique has closed well to hit the board in her last pair, the G1 Beverly D and Flower Bowl. Dynaforce stole the Flower Bowl by setting dawdling fractions on the front end. Folk Opera found the competition on this side of the pond a bit easier when she wired the G1 E P Taylor last out. Forever Together won the G1 Diana and First Lady in two of her last three starts. Pure Clan suffered her first turf defeat in five starts last out in the G1 Garden City when second. Sealy Hill was third to Folk Opera in the E P Taylor. Vacare is seeking her first G1 stakes score. Visit is eligible for a second level allowance race though she’s won a pair of G3s in Europe.

The Scenario
Expect Dynaforce, Folk Opera and Halfway to Heaven to set a sensible pace up front. Mauralakana, Vacare and Wait a While should be following them. Communique, Forever Together, Pure Clan, Sealy Hill and Visit do their best running in the latter stages.

The Strategy
In my opinion, this is one of the toughest races to get a handle on, so you almost have to spread out in multi-race exotics. If you’re a win bettor and can’t separate a few in here like myself, bet the longest price of those you like. It’s that wide open.

The Bomb
Communique always seems to grab a piece of the pie. Maybe Friday is the day she gets the whole thing. You could do a lot worse, especially at the 20-1 or so she’ll go off.
