Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Carolina at Anaheim (8 p.m EDT). Coming off their first win following an 0-4-0 start, the Ducks are looking to establish their first winning streak of the season.

STARS

Friday

— Michal Handzus, Kings, scored 56 seconds into the game and again at 3:21 of overtime to rally Los Angeles to a 4-3 victory over Carolina.

— Jason Spezza and Jarko Ruutu, Senators, scored two goals apiece in a 6-3 victory over Phoenix.

— Ales Kotalik and Thomas Vanek, Sabres. Kotalik had two goals and Vanek scored his NHL-leading sixth in a 5-2 victory over Vancouver.

— Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Ducks, made 38 saves for his 30th career shutout in a 4-0 victory over San Jose.

— Rick Nash, Blue Jackets, scored twice in a 5-3 victory over Nashville.

FIRST WIN, FIRST LOSS

Anaheim’s 4-0 victory over San Jose on Friday night was the Ducks’ first win of the season after an 0-4 start—avoiding the worst start in franchise history. It was also the Sharks’ first loss after opening with four wins.

STRONG DEBUTS

Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers made 26 saves in his first NHL start to help the Edmonton Oilers improve to 3-0 with a 4-3 victory at Calgary on Friday night. The rookie started in place of Mathieu Garon. … Blue Jackets rookie Nikita Filatov—an 18-year-old playing in his first career NHL game—got his first NHL goal in Columbus’ 5-3 victory over Nashville.

SCORELESS

The Rangers’ Steve Valiquette outdueled the Maple Leafs’ Vesa Toskala in a goalie showdown, and Fredrik Sjostrom scored the deciding goal in a shootout to lift New York to a 1-0 victory over Toronto on Friday night. Valiquette had 21 saves through overtime and Toskala had 32. Valiquette allowed a goal in the tiebreaker to Nikolai Kulemin, but earned his third NHL shutout when Jason Blake hit the post on the final shot of the shootout. Nikolai Zherdev opened the shootout with a goal for the Rangers, who bounced back from their first loss two nights earlier to improve to 6-1.

QUICK RETURN

Daniel Alfredsson returned to Ottawa’s lineup one week after having knee surgery and assisted on two of the Senators’ three first-period goals in a 6-3 victory over Phoenix on Friday night. Alfredsson, who set up goals by linemates Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley 3:08 apart late in the first to put Ottawa up 3-0, missed one game—Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Detroit—after having arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip from his right knee.

SUSPENSIONS

Blue Jackets center Michael Peca had his suspension for making contact with an official cut in half to five games by the NHL on Friday. Peca, who met with NHL officials the previous day, was suspended for confronting an official after he thought he’d been slew-footed in the Blue Jackets’ Oct. 10 season-opener at Dallas—subsequently grabbing the official’s arm to argue his case. Originally deemed a Category II penalty which requires a 10-game suspension, it was cut after the league looked at video of the offense. … Coyotes left wing Daniel Carcillo was suspended for two games without pay for a fight during Wednesday’s game against Chicago. Carcillo will forfeit $9,610.22 in salary.

SIGNED

Los Angeles signed defenseman Matt Greene to a five-year extension through the 2013-14 season on Friday. The signing comes six days after the Kings signed center Anze Kopitar to a seven-year extension through 2015-16. The 25-year-old Greene is in his first season with the Kings after spending three years with Edmonton and was named one of the Kings’ assistant captains earlier this month.

SPEAKING

“It’s tough when we’ve got to kill five, six, seven penalties in a row. You ask any team, that’s a tough hill to climb. You give them that many opportunities, they’re going to cash in on a few of them.”—Calgary’s Todd Bertuzzi, after the Flames gave Edmonton five consecutive power plays in the second period Friday night. The Oilers scored three power-play goals during the stretch and went on to a 4-3 victory.

Saturday's Tip Sheet
By Scott Rickenbach

Looking for value on a Saturday card? Of course we all know about the College Football card as that’s where most bettors turn at this time of year. However, those that are looking to pad their bankrolls with even more profits realize that value can be had on a deep Saturday card of NHL action. With 13 games to choose from on a Saturday that promises to be full of "Puck Bucks" let’s take a look at four potential "investment opportunities" and what we will term our "Fearsome Foursome":

COLORADO @ DALLAS – Many people are not surprised to see the Avalanche get involved in high scoring games. Their first four games this season have totaled thirty goals for an average of 7.5 goals per game. However, what on earth is going on in Dallas? The Stars first four games have also totaled thirty goals for an average of 7.5 goals per game. Of course, when ‘craziness’ like this happens we don’t ask too many questions; rather, we simply jump in and take advantage of it! Each of these two teams have gone over the total in three of their first four games and more of the same could be on tap on Saturday in the lone afternoon game on the NHL card! The Avalanche goaltending continues to be a concern as Peter Budaj has struggled.

Andrew Raycroft had a strong debut with the Avs Thursday night but Budaj is still expected to get the start Saturday. Things have not gone well for Marty Turco of the Stars early this season either!

MINNESOTA @ TAMPA BAY – Before going on this road trip to face three Southeast Division clubs the Wild seemed very focused on heading down south and picking up six points on this three game road trip. There was just a good feel in the locker-room for this club and, so far, that has proven to be a sign of good things to come! The Wild won the first two games of their road trip by a combined score of 10 to 4 and they now face a Lightning club that is enduring early struggles with all the changes. Bringing in coach Barry Melrose as well as a lot of new faces on the roster has hurt this team’s chances for early season success. As a result, Tampa Bay is still winless on the season and the Lightning are now facing a Wild club that is disciplined and plays in a solid system under coach Jacques Lemaire. The Lightning system is still a work-in-progress and, although all the losses for Tampa Bay have come by one goal, it’s hard to see them getting over the hump here with the way the Wild are rolling!

CHICAGO @ ST LOUIS – In a shocking early season move, Blackhawks coach Denis Savard was fired just four games into the season and it came right after Chicago got their first win of the season! In fact, the Blackhawks had earned three points in their last two games and appeared to be turning things around. However, with all the talent the Hawks have on hand, Chicago management felt that it was unacceptable for the Blackhawks to open up the season winless in their first three games. Look for Chicago to respond on the ice after seeing their coach fired and look for the Blues to be the first victim. The Blackhawks are catching the Blues at the ideal time as St Louis just knocked off the Stars 6 to 1 on Thursday! After a big win over Dallas, it will likely be tough for the Blues to match the hunger and energy that the Blackhawks will bring to the ice. The Hawks have the roster strength to be one of the top teams in the Western Conference while St Louis, despite their 3-1 start, still looks like one of the worst. Could be solid line value here with the Blackhawks who will also be motivated to take down a division rival who, unlike them, is off to a good start this season!

PHILADELPHIA @ SAN JOSE – The Flyers are off to a very poor start this season but it’s often the wounded dog that bites the hardest and Philadelphia could be catching San Jose at the perfect time! The Sharks will be coming off of a tough divisional battle at Anaheim on Friday night and that makes this a tough, back to back spot for the Sharks as they will be dealing with strong, physical teams on back to back nights. Yes, the Flyers are off to an ugly start this season but after Coach John Stevens tirade after Philadelphia lost at Colorado on Friday, you might be surprised at how well the Flyers play on Saturday night! Certainly this is a capable club as they went all the way to the conference finals last season before bowing out against Pittsburgh. The Flyers are 0-3-1 on the season but they had faced the Rangers, Canadiens, and Penguins before losing at Colorado on Thursday. Facing four playoff teams (and facing some of them in tough situational spots) made for a very rough start to the season for the Flyers. Now they are the team with a situational advantage and that could show up in the form of a big upset on Saturday night! Flyers might be worth a look here!

Saturday's best NHL bets
COVERS.com

New Jersey Devils at Washington Capitals

The Devils blanked the Thrashers 1-0 on Thursday but it wasn’t all good news for New Jersey after the game. Forward Brian Rolston, who scored the game’s lone goal, left early because of an ankle sprain. Team officials don’t expect Rolston to play during the Devils next four road games.

The Caps, meanwhile, are fresh of a come-from-behind victory over the Penguins. Washington erased a three-goal deficit without star winger Alexander Olevchkin lighting the lamp.

“I don’t know if it’s a statement game, per se, but I think it’s the identity of our team – no matter what happens, we don’t quit,” Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau told the Washington Post after the game. “In four games we have been down early and we have to find a way to get out of that habit. But it’s awful nice to believe you can come back.”

Expect the Caps to fall behind early again, only this time Martin Brodeur prevents any type of comeback.

Pick: Devils +114

Chicago Blackhawks at St. Louis Blues

Hawks general manager Dale Tallon didn’t wait to long to send a message to his players.

The axe fell on coach Denis Savard after just four games this season – even worse immediately following the team’s first win of the season.

Taking over behind the bench is former Avs and Blues head coach Joel Quennville.

“His teams are 155 games above .500,” Tallon told the Chicago Tribune. “Nine of the last [11] seasons, he has been in the playoffs.”

The news is much more positive coming out of Missouri. The Blues have won three of four games and are getting offensive contributions from veteran forwards Keith Tkachuk (five goals) and Paul Kariya (one goal and seven assists).

Quennville won’t get his first win as the Blackhawks coach Saturday against a hot Blues’ team.

Pick: Blues -118
