SCOREBOARD

Friday, Oct. 17

Edmonton at Calgary (9 p.m. EDT). The Alberta rivals meet for the first time this season.

STARS

Thursday

— Martin Brodeur, Devils, made 25 saves for his 97th career shutout in a 1-0 victory at Atlanta.

— Antti Miettinen and Mikko Koivu, Wild. Miettinen scored two power-play goals and Koivu had a goal and four assists in a 6-2 victory at Florida.

— Trent Hunter, Islanders, scored his second goal of the game 51 seconds into overtime in a 4-3 victory at Tampa Bay.

— Alex Burrows, Canucks, scored 27 seconds into overtime in a 4-3 victory at Detroit.

SILL WINLESS

Tampa Bay’s 4-3 loss in overtime to the Islanders kept new Lightning coach Barry Melrose winless on the season. Melrose is still seeking his first win since 1995, when he left coaching to join ESPN as an analyst. Tampa Bay has dropped four in a row—including two overtime defeats—to start the season.

SELECT COMPANY

Martin Brodeur made 25 saves in New Jersey’s 1-0 victory at Atlanta, his 97th career shutout, moving within three of joining Terry Sawchuk (103) in the century club. It was also Brodeur’s 541st victory, closing to 10 behind Patrick Roy’s NHL record.

SEE YA, DENIS

After only four games and just hours after Chicago’s first victory of the season, Denis Savard was fired as coach and replaced by Joel Quenneville. The Blackhawks, who have missed the playoffs nine of the past 10 seasons, improved to 1-2-1 following a 4-1 home victory over Phoenix on Wednesday night. Savard, a Hall of Fame player and one of the franchise’s most popular figures, became coach in November 2006 and finished with a 65-66-16 record. Quenneville has coached the Blues and Avalanche, and his first game as coach of the Blackhawks is Saturday at St. Louis.

STRONG STARTS

Minnesota improved to 3-0 with a 6-2 victory at Florida on Thursday night. It’s the third consecutive season the Wild have started off with three victories. Minnesota was 5-0 last season and 6-0 in 2006-07. Wild goalie Nicklas Backstrom made 24 saves in the win, improving to 10-0-4 with one no-decision in his last 15 starts.

RARE WIN

Washington trailed 3-0 just two minutes into the second period at Pittsburgh on Thursday night before rallying for a 4-3 win. Boyd Gordon scored a delayed goal with 4:17 left in the third period to complete the Capitals’ comeback. The Penguins were 10-1-1 in their previous 12 against Washington, and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury had been 7-0 against the Capitals.

SCORING DEFENDERS

St. Louis defensemen Jay McKee, Eric Brewer and Steve Wagner all scored as the Blues had their best offensive output since January in beating the Stars 6-1 Thursday night. St. Louis’ blueliners have four goals in four games this season after tallying just 15 in 2007-08. The Blues last scored six goals in a game Jan. 8, 2008, 6-1 over Columbus, a span of 45 games.

SUCCESSFUL DEBUT

Andrew Raycroft won his first career start for Colorado, stopping 16 shots in the Avalanche’s 5-2 victory over Philadelphia on Thursday night. Raycroft, who started 16 games for Toronto last season, started in place of Peter Budaj (0-3). The goals Raycroft allowed came on Mike Richards’ 5-on-3 power-play score and Simon Gagne’s penalty shot.

SPEAKING

“It was a flat camp and we got out of the gate flat. It just didn’t seem that we carried over the energy that we had to finish the year last year. We felt we needed to send a message and invigorate this team. … It’s about moving forward, about achieving and winning and developing a consistent approach. And we felt we needed a more experienced person in that position and that’s why we made the decision.”—Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon, on the reasons for firing Denis Savard as coach and replacing him with Joel Quenneville.

Friday's best NHL bets
By LIPPSMAN

Edmonton at Calgary (-136)

Edmonton is coming off back-to-back 3-2 wins over the Avs and Ducks. Right now everything is going Edmonton's way. Garon has a very nice .941 save percentage and the club hasn't allowed a power play goal yet, while getting two scores on the man advantage at the other end. The only glitch seems to be in the face-off circle; losing Marty Reasoner and Jarett Stoll has hurt a bit more than I thought it would.

The Flames have sputtered out of the gate again this year, with much of the blame landing on Miikka Kiprusoff, who has a goals against average that's hovering around five goals and a save percentage under .850. Even with goaltending problems in Calgary I see a huge effort being put in the battle tonight. These teams squared off eight times last year with the under cashing in six times.

Pick: Under

Vancouver at Buffalo (-149)

Buffalo is a perfect 3-0 to start the year while averaging four goals a game, which is a big surprise considering the Sabres are missing two important guys in Jochen Hecht and Tim Connolly.

The Sabres catch Vancouver on its fourth game of a six-game road trip, and just a day after playing the Detroit Red Wings. Buffalo is just playing too strong right now to pass them up.

Pick: Buffalo
