Re: THURSDAY PREMIUM SERVICE PLAYS

Larry Ness

20* ALCS GOY

The Tampa Bay Rays announced Wednesday that they would start Scott Kazmir in Game 5 of the ALCS instead of James Shields. It makes plenty of sense. The Rays lead 3-1 in the series and this will allow James Shields (originally scheduled to start Game 5) to start Game 6 at Tropicana Field. Shields took the loss in Game 1 in Tampa but he pitched well, allowing only two ERs on six hits in 7.1 innings. Shields has been terrific at home all season, posting a 2.66 ERA in 19 starts (including the playoffs), with the Rays going 15-4. Manager Joe Maddon is well aware that Shields has made three career starts in Fenway (two this year and one in '07), lasting just 10.2 innings while allowing 18 hits and 12 ERs for an 10.13 ERA and going 0-3. Getting back to Kazmir, he looked terrible in his Game 2 start vs the Red Sox, allowing six hits and five ERs over 4.1 innings. That followed a poor home start against the Red Sox on September 15, when he allowed six hits and nine ERs in just three innings. Maddon has to figure that things can't get any worse for Kazmir in Fenway. He's probably right but the fact remains that Kazmir has faced the Red Sox five times this season (including Game 2 of the ALCS) and his numbers read like this (22.1 innings / 30 hits / 23 ERs / 9.27 ERA). For me the bottom line is this, I don't think Kazmir can handle the Red Sox lineup. Boston has been in tough spots before in recent ALCS, coming from 0-3 down against the Yankees to win in 2004 and from 1-3 down last year to win vs the Indians. Boston went 27-13 vs left-handed starters during the '08 regular season while averaging 5.9 RPG and that included a 17-6 mark at Fenway. Starting for Boston will be Daisuke Matsuzaka, who went 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA this year for the Red Sox. Boston went 23-6 in his starts, as he ranked fourth among all MLB starters with a moneyline mark of plus-$1,353. Dice K pitched Game 1 of this series and while some say he wasn't all that sharp, he went seven innings while allowing four hits (also four walks) without allowing a run (had nine Ks!) in a 2-0 Boston win. I'll take that kind of effort again from him and I see the Red Sox winning comfortably, as they again get to Kazmir. Back to Tampa we go.

20* Bos Red Sox.

Agree,i think it's 8-2 already on NHL and the Canucks pick was just awesome, and let's face it if he can win on the first rounds of NHL he can only get beeter in the process..
