TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

MATT RIVERS

Tuesday take the Nationals at Coors.

Sure Colorado is the much better team than Washington and sure the Rockies could put up a big number and win going away today but I still cannot let Jorge De la Rosa get away with laying such a hefty price anywhere and against anybody.

Bad pitchers could get pounded by any Major League ballclub at anytime and that is the situation here. A guy like De La Rosa just flat out cannot be such a favorite, he just can't. No doubt the chunky lefty has the far superior hitting club on his side with a stud like Holliday plus Taveras, Tulowitzki, Atkins and a few others and could do enough to get a win here but it's still too much jack to lay.

Washington is playing out the string and is as beat up as beat up could be with their two best players in Zimmerman and Guzman missing some recent action. Manny Acta's squad is not very talented but yet still were able to win going away yesterday and sweep the superior Reds over the weekend and once again could have enough to win this game against a bad pitcher.

John Lannan has been pretty darn good this season and has won as a similar dog a bunch of times this season including at Turner Field against the Braves a month ago when they were still formidable. The lefty can definitely hold his own today and with him being the better starter and getting this price back I can't but take a chance on the visiting Nats.

TONY KARPINSKI

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. St Louis Cardinals
Play: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers were hoping Manny Ramirez would provide some offensive punch when they acquired him at the trade deadline. The move is already paying dividends. Ramirez looks to continue his red-hot hitting Tuesday night when Los Angeles opens a three-game road set against Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers (56-55) obtained Ramirez from Boston in a three-team deal just before Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline. The 11-time All-Star and 2004 World Series MVP made an immediate impact, going 8-for-13 (.615) with two homers and five RBIs in three games adding some much needed punch into their lineup. Chad Billingsley (11-9, 3.05), gets the call on Tuesday night for the Blue, who seeks a third consecutive victory. The right-hander has allowed two runs and 10 hits in 16 2-3 innings over his last two starts. He was outstanding Wednesday, throwing his first career shutout by scattering five hits and striking out eight in a 4-0 victory over San Francisco. Lets back the LA Dodgers on the road tonight. Play on the LA DODGERS

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis
Pick: St. Louis -106

One thing is for sure and that is you'd never get Chris Carpenter and the Cards at home for basically even money before his Tommy John surgery last April. The fact that Carpenter threw 67 pitches and allowed just one run over four innings, and had no setbacks says this guy is ready to be himself again and soon. The Cards are 27-10 over his last 37 home starts and we'll take the odds makers hedge that he isn't Chris Carpenter yet, and say that he is. St. Louis has been a difficult stop for Los Angeles over the past three years as they have gone just 2-7 here and have been outscored in the process 59-17 or by almost five runs a game. We will back the Cards in the opener at home.

BOSTON RED SOX -170 (1 DIME)

Some key items:  The Detroit Tigers are 0-5 this season in the first game of a series after being swept in its previous series.Detroit SP Nate Robertson is 4-13 in the month of August in his career and has been ESPECIALLY atrocious the last couple years.Get this one early, as it should only climb - surprised this isn't in the -170 range - but the White Sox bullpen hasn't been great lately

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Nick "BookieKiller" Parsons

TOR / OAK Over 8.5

Oakland has not been scoring well during their seven game losing streak but facing Blue Jays pitcher Scott Richmond will result in their bats coming back to life here. One thing that has been consistent for the As is some suddenly sub-par pitching. Oaklands starting pitchers are 1-10 with a 7.03 ERA in their 16 games since the All Star Break. Greg Smith gets the start for the Athletics on Tuesday and he has lost three straight starts and four straight decisions. The southpaw has a 6.18 ERA in his July starts. Smith has also struggled on the road this season as hes 3-6 with a 4.61 ERA away from home. The Oakland left-hander has also had a problem with issuing too many walks when on the road. Smith has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last three starts and the long ball has been a big problem too. Smith has given up eight homers in his last six starts. Overall, Smith is 3-10 in his last 13 decisions and hes facing a Blue Jays club that has averaged six runs per game in their last four games. With a total of just 8.5 as the opening number on this match-up this is a great value considering the pitching match-up here and the way the Jays are hitting the ball. As for the As, the reason they are likely to bounce back on offense today is because of facing Richmond. The 27 year old is making just his second MLB start and he struggled in his first. Yes, Richmond allowed just three earned runs versus Tampa Bay last week but note the 7 hits in 5.3 innings of work. Note that the 7 hits all came via left-handed sticks and Richmond will be facing an As club that his five left-handed batters and a switch-hitter on their roster. In other words, its likely to be another rough outing for Richmond and note that the Jays four games this month have featured an average of 11.5 runs per game. Look for more of the same tonight.

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

The King Maker

BOS -1.5 (-110) vs KAN  2-Units

For KC, Soria and Tejeda are now unavailable, and Mahay is currently running a gaudy 16.20 ERA over his last three games. That means that KC's bullpen is missing its ACE closer, and their ACE set-up man is crapping out.

The remaining options are not going to stop a late inning run by the Red Sox.

Nunez, Peralta, The Ramirez boys, And Mahay are all sitting above 4.50 on their ERA's over the last three appearances, and that simply won't hold a lead, or allow the Royals to catch up.

THE BACK DOOR IS WIDE OPEN.

For Boston, Okajima, Papelbon, Lopez, and Delcarmen are looking STELLAR over the last few starts. Something has changed! They can hold our lead, or let us catch a two run win.

On a Run Line wager you MUST make sure of two things!

1. The enemy pen must be in dissaray.

2. Your pen must be in optimal condition.

We have that!

As far as the Starters?????

Beckett is being underrated due to a string of shaky games, but the public doesn't see the fact that he had to face the Yankees and the Angels TWICE in 4 of his last 5 starts!

That's 207 pitches to Angels Bats.

That's 212 pitches to Yankee Bats.

That would kill anyone's splits!!!!!

Before that stretch, he faced Houston Cincy, and Arizona and allowed only 4 earned runs over 22 innings.

I think we can expect Beckett to get back on track, as the Royals are more like Houston, Cincy, and Zona, and they also haven't seen Beckett this year.

He has a 19/3 K/BB Ratio against KC batters. In 82 at bats there were 7 runs scored. Royals batters have never hit a Home Run or a Triple against Josh.

I will ride that set-up anyday!

Tony George

TAM (-123) vs CLE

Tampa Bay  -123

I had a bonus play on D-Rays last night, and lost it, but with the Tribe taking 5 straight in this series this season, they are ripe for the fall and with the D-Rays at home and their bullpen tossing out a 2,.79 ERA the last 3 games, while Cleveland's bullpen is approaching a 6 ERA in that timeframe, the line is cheap for a home team, a better team, with 5 time revenge staring them in the face tonight.  The scenario calls for a very capable team at home with a short number on the moneyline going up against a starter in the Tribe who has posted a whopping  14.34 ERA in his last 3 starts!

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

MICHAEL CANNON

Pittsburgh at ARIZONA -1½

Take the Diamondbacks on the run line tonight when they host the Pirates.

Brandon Webb will get the start and he?s having a fantastic year, but has also owned the Pirates in his career.

Webb is 15-4 with a 3.04 ERA on the year, including 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last three starts. The right-hander has been just as tough on the Bucs, going 4-0 with a 2.41 ERA in five lifetime starts.

The Pirates will counter with Zack Duke, who has been getting lit up like the proverbial Christmas tree lately.

The left-hander is 0-3 with an 11.25 ERA in his last three starts.

Duke has no margin for error in this one and he just hasn?t been pitching up to the task lately, so the Diamondbacks on the run line is the play.

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

CHRIS CHIRIMBES

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

If history is any indication, the first game on the trip could be the toughest for Florida. Moyer (10-6, 3.79 ERA) has won each of his 10 starts against the Marlins, including three this season, while posting a 3.03 ERA. A few Florida hitters have had their share of success against Moyer - Jacobs is 6-for-14 (.429) with three homers all-time against the 45-year-old left-hander, while Hanley Ramirez is 9-for-29 (.310) with four homers - but so far it hasn't been enough. Moyer gave up three runs, all on a pair of first-inning homers, and lasted six innings in Wednesday's 8-5 win in Washington. He is 3-0 over his last five starts. Now, Moyer will be trying to lead the Phillies to their eighth win in nine games

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Ben Burns

Washington Nationals @ Colorado Rockies
PICK: Colorado Rockies -155

The Rockies are a bit on the 'expensive' side to qualify as one of my guaranteed plays, particularly as I've already released another larger favorite (Big Chalk GOW) today. However, if you've followed my complimentary selections, you'll have seen that we often do find "value" these larger-priced favorites. That being said, the Rockies have enjoyed plenty of success vs. left-handed starters and that should give them a significant advantage in this evening's "all southpaw" matchup.

The Rockies are 3-0 their last three games against left-handed starters, winning those games by a 20-7 margin. That includes a 10-1 victory the last time (Kershaw and the Dodgers on 7/22) that they faced a southpaw here at Coors. In fact, they've reached double-digits in runs in ALL three of their last three home games vs. left-handed starters. Looking back a bit further and we find them at 13-6 their last 19 against left-handed starters and that they've scored a minimum of five runs in eight straight home games against southpaws. Those games saw them score 10, 10, 11, 5, 18, 6, 8 and 6 runs. That's an average of eight runs per game. Asking the light-hitting Nationals to keep up with those kind of numbers is asking too much, particularly given the fact that they are missing a couple of key players and that they remain tied for San Diego as the lowest-scoring team (3.8 runs per game) in all of baseball.

While he's actually pitched fairly well at times, the Nationals are just 2-10 the last 12 times that Lannan took the mound. Note that he got rocked last time out. Even after yesterday's victory, the Nationals are still 1-7 their last eight trips to Colorado and an ugly 4-16 their last 20 road games overall. De La Rosa also got roughed up in his last start. He'd allowed just one earned run in each of his previous two starts though, going six or more innings in each of those games. The Rockies won those two games by scores of 5-1 and 7-1. They're 5-2 in his seven home starts overall and should be able to cool off their guests here. Consider Colorado

Re: TUESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Drew Gordon

Minnesota -125 at SEATTLE

Got to like the Twins to bounce back here, one day removed from their total collapse against the Mariners. Minnesota blew a 6-run lead, as the M's scored 10 in the 7th, eventually winning 11-6 last night. Needless to say, I expect the Twinkies to come out fired up in this one, as they've not only got the pitching match up, but they're also once again looking up at the White Sox in the standings.

Speaking of the pitching match up, although not at his best in his last start, the Twins Scott Baker has nonetheless been rock-solid, allowing 3 runs or less in all but 3 of his starts this season! He's also 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA over his last 3, and is 4-2 with a respectable 4.14 ERA on the road this season.

Another bonus for Baker, is that he can expect plenty of support with the Mariners knuckler D.A. Dickey pitching tonight. Sure, he was good against Texas in his last start, but let's not get carried away. This is the same pitcher who's 1-2 with a 6.63 ERA over his last 3 starts. Not to mention, rigthies are eating him up, batting .300 against him on the year! On the flip side, the Mariners are averaging just 3.7 run per game against rigthies at Safeco, batting .254 in the process!

Bottom line, the Twins bounce back hard here tonight, as we can count on Baker to deliver, while the same cannot be said about Dickey, who's been consistently inconsistent all season. They may have blew it bad last night, but this time around, the Twins take care of business, plain and simple.

Take Minnesota behind Baker over Seattle and Dickey in this MLB match up.

Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies have won four of the last five games against the Florida Marlins in Philly and will start lefty Jamie Moyer, who has been very successful against the Marlins. Moyer is 10-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 career starts versus the Marlins. Look for the veteran  to stay unbeaten versus the Marlins.

Go with the Phillies! Philadelphia is 7-1 in their last 8 games, 7-1 in its last 8 at Citizens Bank Park and has won Jamie Moyer's last 10 starts against the Marlins, including the last 5 at home.

Gold Medal Club

Minnesota @ Seattle
PLAY MINNESOTA -125

The price is right here, as we find a tale of contrasting pitching forms. Baker has been exceptional this year for the Twins, a solid 3.79 era in his last 3 starts.Dickey on the other hand 6.63 era last 3 starts and a whopping 7.60 era at home, the Twins should be able to get to him early and often. We also take note the Twins are a perfect 5-0 as road chalk in the -100 to -150 range.

Minnesota Twins @ Seattle Mariners

Last night the Twins lost to the Mariners 10-6 in a Game played at Safe Co Field. Blame it on the Jet Lag.( maybe ) Tonight the Twins will be ready with SCOTT BAKER ( 7-3 3.53 ) when he takes the mound against R.A.Dickey ( 2-6 5.56 ) who will start for the Mariners. In two appearances against the Twins Dickey is 0-2 with an ERA of 12.26.That ERA is enough to jump on the Twins tonight. Minnesota still leads the American League Central Division over the White Sox.

Take the Minnesota Twins

Jack Reynolds Power Plays Hotline MLB " FREE PICK "

Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds

The Reds defeated the Brewers last night in the opener of this 3 game series. The Brewers were caught fighting in the Dugout during the game. Fat Ass Price Fielder ( who thinks he is tough ) went after stating Pitcher Manny Parra after he was removed from the game.

The Ship is sinking and the players know it. Dave Bush ( 5-9 4.73 ) will start for the Brewers. Edison Volquez ( 13-3 2.74 ) who is having a carer season will start for the Reds. Volquez defeated the Brewers in Milwaukee on 07/12/2009 ( 8-2 ) his ERA leads the N.L. with a sparkling ERA of 2.74. Take Cincinnati with Volquez in the Box over the Fighting Milwaukee Brewers.
