WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Re: WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

TRIPLE THREAT SPORTS

White Sox over the Tigers

Even with a loss last night, Pale Hose the hotter team, Vazquez the hotter pitcher, and tons of stat edges (including that Tigers are 2-11 in Verlander starts this year) also favor the road team.

PLAY ON: PHILADELPHIA PHILLES

Cole Hamels is off an impressive outing last Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia shuting down the Reds and record breaking Ken Griffey. Hamels was a follow-up to back-to-back purged outings in which he threw with a "dead arm" syndrome, a common denominator at this time of year. With the Phillies coming in off a lackluster effort last night, we fully expect a rebound effort here. Furthermore, Philly carries a perfect 100% record of 7-0 against LHP into this classic Wednesday showdown.

VEGAS EXPERTS

Philadelphia Phillies at Florida Marlins

The Florida Marlins went Under yesterday, by only half a run it should be pointed out, for the first time since 5/22, an incredible string of 17 straight games w/ an Over or a push (happened just twice). It should be no surprise that the opponent was the Phillies, who have now gone Under in eight straight overall. Considering the recent ERA's of today's respective hurlers, Hamels and Miller, expect the scoring output to be more of the Marlins liking today.

Play on: Over

JOHN FINA

Seattle/Toronto Under 7.5

Today we expect a low-scoring game as the Seattle Mariners do battle with the Toronto Blue Jays. One reason why we expect a low-scoring game is because both these teams will be sending starting pitchers to the mound who have pitched very well this season (especially well as of late). This says it all... The Seattle Mariners Starting Pitcher (Felix Hernandez) has a 2.18 ERA in his last 3 starts, while Toronto Blue Jays Starting Pitcher (Shaun Marcum) has a 1.69 ERA in his last 3 starts. As you can see, both these starting pitchers should give up very few hits and runs today. In addition, these teams have a history of playing low-scoring games when they meet. In fact, the Under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings between these teams. We expect to see another low-scoring game today! Take the Seattle Mariners/Toronto Blue Jays Under 7.5!

Re: WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

LT Profits

Chicago White Sox +105

Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers has been the biggest money burner in baseball this season, while Javier Vazquez of the Chicago White Sox is quietly having a very good year.

Vazquez may be just 6-4, but he has a nice 3.64 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 84 innings, and Chicago is 8-4 as a team in the games that he has started. He has eight Quality Starts in his 12 starts, and allowed only four runs in three of the non-quality outings. Furthermore, he has four consecutive Quality Start vs. the Tigers, including holding them scoreless on just five hits in his first start against them this season. As if that is not enough, the White Sox bullpen now leads the American League with a 2.84 pen ERA.

Verlander was considered a Cy Young candidate entering this season, but he has proceeded to go 2-9 with a 5.05 ERA on the year, and the Tigers are 2-11 as team in all of his starts. Not surprisingly, the -13.17 units that he has cost his supporters this year ranks him dead last among 223 pitchers that have made a start this season. He has also been hit hard in both of his starts vs. the White Sox this season, surrendering a total of 10 earned runs and 18 baserunners in 13.1 innings.

Throw in the fact that the Detroit bullpen ranks 28th out of 30 Major League teams with a 4.41 pen ERA, and the White Sox seem like a rather easy call as small dogs here.

Pick: White Sox +105

Los Angeles Dodgers @ San Diego Padres Under 7.0

The San Diego Padres recently set a Major League by winning four consecutive 2-1 games, so they are accustomed to playing low scoring games. Expect more of the same vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight.

The Dodgers are not immune from low scoring affairs either, as the Under is 14-6 in their last 20 games overall. Their starter Chad Billingsley allowed four runs in five innings vs. the Chicago Cubs in his last start, but that snapped a streak of four consecutive starts where he allowed two runs or less including two scoreless efforts. This looks like a great spot for Billingsley to start a new streak, as he allowed a grand total of two runs in his last four starts vs. San Diego, covering 25 innings. Also, the Dodgers bullpen has done its part when called upon, ranking second in the National League with a 2.86 pen ERA.

Padres starter Randy Wolf is also in excellent form right now, as he has recorded five consecutive Quality Starts including allowing two runs or less in each of his last four outings. He has also loved pitching here in San Diego, as he is 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA and an outstanding 1.05 WHIP in his home ballpark.

Now seven may seem like a low total for most teams, but we already documented San Diego’s recent string of 2-1 games, and the Under is actually 29-13 in their last 42 games that had a posted total of seven or less, so this is not uncharted territory for them.

Pick: Dodgers/Padres Under 7

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Houston Astros
Play: Houston Astros

Houston swept the Milwaukee Brewers at Minute Maid Park in the clubs' first series of the season, sparking the Astros' best stretch so far. The Brewers returned the favor in Milwaukee as part of their own surge in the standings about a month later. They hope to continue that hot streak as they seek a 5th straight win against the Astros on WEdnesday night when the NL Central rivals in the 2nd game of a three-game stint in Houston. Look for Houston at home behind Backe to get the win and the Astros bats to stay hot. Play the Houston Astros

Jimmy The Moose

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants

Both teams come into this game playing a lot better than they were earlier this year. The Giants have won 7 of their last 8 road games, including 6-1 in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a losing record. Lincecum is on the mound tonight and he's 8-1 with a 2.15 ERA on the year. The Giants have won his last 4 starts and 5 of his alst 6 road starts. The Rockies counter with the struggling Jimenez. He's 1-6 on the year and the Rockies are 2-11 in his 13 starts this season. Big edge to the Giants on the mound tonight and that's going to be the difference. Good luck - Jimmy The Moose

Re: WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Michael Cannon

Washington +125 at PITTSBURGH

Take the Nationals tonight as the road dog over the Pirates.

Pittsburgh just can’t seem to get to that elusive .500 mark.  Every time they get close, they take two steps back.

The Nationals, who are in last place in the NL East, rank near the bottom of the league in every offensive category.  They are batting .235 as a team with only 47 homeruns.  In their four-game losing streak prior to last night’s win the Nats were outscored 25-6 while hitting .213 with one homer.

When they go against the Pirates, it’s suddenly an offensive onslaught for these rag-tag Nationals!

Washington is 4-1 against the Bucos this season, scoring 28 runs while hitting .322 with seven homeruns against them.

The Pirates will send Ian Snell to the mound and the so-called ace of the staff has been a big disappointment this season.  The right-hander is 2-6 with a 5.65 ERA and hasn’t won since April 12.

Snell is 0-6 with a 6.24 ERA in his last 10 starts, including a 5-2 loss to Washington on May 4.

The Nats will counter with John Lannan, who is 4-6 with a 3.47 ERA.  The left-hander is 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in his last three starts, getting just four runs of support in that span.

That shouldn’t be a problem tonight.

Take the Nats as they grab the road win.

Karl Garrett

St. Louis +110 at CINCINNATI

Going for free play winner #10 in a row tonight as the G-Man loads up on the Cardinals over the Reds.

Yes, Johnny Cueto has loads of talent, and he does enter with a 3-game winning streak, but I just don't trust him to go deep into this game, and I certainly don't trust the volatile Cincy bullpen to close the deal in this spot.

Ryan Ludwick has been a monster this year, and while Albert the Great is bothered by a sore hammy, I can see Ludwick stirring things up in the middle of the St. Louis attack tonight.

The Redbirds have won their last 3, while the Red-Legs have lost 3 of their last 4, and have also lost 3 of 4 this season to St. Louis.

Braden Looper won his lone start versus Cincy earlier this year, and over his last 3 starts against the Reds, he has worked 20 innings of 3-run ball!

Take the Cards to post another win at Cincy's expense.

Sports Gambling Hotline

Milwaukee at HOUSTON -120

The 'Stros dumped the Brew Crew 6-1 last night to improve to a perfect 4-0 this season at home against Milwaukee, and chances look strong for another Houston win, as the pitching matchup is certainly in their favor.

Milwaukee will send Manny Parra to the bump, and while he was able to beat Houston and Brandon Backe on May 30th, that game was at Miller Park. On the road, Parra is just 1-2 this season with a huge 6.95 ERA!

Brandon Backe has gone a solid 3-1 at Minute Maid Park with a 2.90 ERA, and his team is 17-11 in their home park.

Milwaukee has dropped 3 of their last 4, all on the road, and are just 14-21 away from Suds City this season.

We say back the Astros to continue the solid home/away trend tonight, as they send the Brewers to another loss.

Play on Houston.

Re: WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Ben Burns

Philadelphia Phillies @ Florida Marlins
PICK: Philadelphia Phillies

While this selection came up just short of 'making the cut,' for my strong Wednesday "premium" card, I still believe that the Phillies will have an advantage and that they offer us solid value. The Marlins took yesterday's opener, a matchup which featured a pair of right-handed starters. A pair of southpaws toe the rubber for this evening's game though and that should provide the visitors with a significant edge.

For starters, the Phillies have pounded left-handers. In fact, they're a perfect 7-0 their last seven games against southpaws, including a 7-5 win over tonight's starter, Andrew Miller, on June 1. The Phillies won those seven games by a whopping combined score of 72-20! They're now 14-4 their last 18 against left-handers and 16-7 on the season. They've averaged 6.7 runs in those games with an on-base-percentage of .353.

Conversely, the Marlins are managing just 4.2 runs per game vs. southpaw starters, hitting .242 with an on-base-percentage of only .304. They're 2-4 their last six against left-handers and 8-10 on the season. Looking back a bit further and we find them at a money-burning 49-65 (-11.4) against left-handers since the start of the 2006 season.

In addition to the fact that they hit better against left-handers, the visitors also have a "better" left-hander going tonight than their hosts do. Cole Hamels went through a rare rough patch recently and he was roughed up by the Marlins on 5/31. However, he's since bounced back in a big way, tossing a complete game 3-hit shutout last time out, a 5-0 win over the Reds. For the season, Hamels is 6-4 with a respectable 3.36 ERA and 1.066 WHIP. On the other hand, Miller has an ugly 5.66 ERA and 1.712 WHIP on the season. Those numbers are even slightly worse in his home starts, too. He's failed to pitch more than five innings in any of his last three starts, recording a dismal 6.92 ERA and 1.923 WHIP during that stretch. Not surprisingly, he Marlins lost all three of those games, getting outscored 23-11.

Despite their victory yesterday, the Marlins are still just 5-9 their last 14 games. The Phillies remain a healthy 4-1 their five games and 15-5 their last 20. They're still 4-2 the last six games against the Marlins and I look for them to even the current series up this evening. Consider laying the price with PHILADELPHIA

Re: WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Ted Sevransky

Seattle Mariners @ Toronto Blue Jays
PICK: Under

REASON FOR PICK: It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to recognize the prevailing trend for the Toronto Blue Jays – this team is a long term Under machine, 40-24 to the Under so far this season. And we’re getting a break on the price to take the Blue Jays Under the total once again today, after the linesmakers adjusted upwards following a stretch of five Overs in six games last week. Facing Seattle’s punchless lineup (less than four runs per game on the road; eight runs scored in their last four games on this road trip) we can expect the underrated Shawn Marcum to continue his run of dominance: seven quality starts in his last eight outings, allowing less than a baserunner per inning for the entire season. And the strong bullpen behind him is fresh and ready after Dustin McGowan’s complete game five hitter against the Mariners last night.

Seattle’s Felix Hernandez is an Under machine himself: 11-2 to the Under in his 13 starts. Hernandez is coming off a pair of brilliant performances, shutting down the Red Sox and the Tigers in 13 innings of scoreless baseball, with more strikeouts (12) than baserunners allowed (eight hits, three walks). Hernandez’s career splits show that opposing hitters struggle to match up with him during daytime starts, allowing fewer baserunners and a lower batting average against than he does at night. Put it all together and we can expect another low scoring ballgame at the Rogers Centre this afternoon. Take the Under.

Re: WEDNESDAY SERVICE PLAYS

Wunderdog

St. Louis at Cincinnati
Pick: Cincinnati -147

Johny Cueto made a dramatic debut and then the Reds proceeded to lose his next five starts. Since then, he has gotten his swagger back and the Reds have won five of his last seven. The Reds have also been a top team at home with a 19-11 mark. Brandon Looper is in the midst of a huge struggle right now, much like Cueto was earlier. His ERA after starting in the 2's has swollen to nearly five and the Cards aren't winning his starts after beginning 3-0. Good spot for home-tough Reds, with a Confident Cueto on the hill.

1 Unit on Nats/Pirates UNDER 9 Runs

Lannan has been an Unders machine for the Nats and we'll take some of that action tonight.  The Under is 4-0 in Lannan's last 4 starts overall and 6-0 in Lannan's last 6 starts when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.  The Under is also 12-3 in the Nationals last 15 games vs. a right-handed starter and 8-1 in the Nationals last 9 games following a win.  The Under is 6-2 in the Pirates last 8 overall, 4-1 in Snell's last 5 home starts, and 5-2-1 in the Pirates last 8 home games vs. a left-handed starter.  Bet the Under tonight.

Black Magic Sports

1 Unit on Cleveland Indians -127

Minnesota is 0-10 against the money line in road games vs. a starting pitcher whose gives up 1 or more HR's/start over the last 2 seasons.  Paul Byrd gives up his fair share of home runs, but the Twins aren’t a power team and don’t take advantage of it.  Byrd is 2-0 through 5 home starts this season with a 1.89 ERA.  He simply does not get beaten at home in 2008.  Nick Blackburn is 1-2 with a 5.36 ERA on the road for Minnesota.  Byrd is 10-3 with a 3.66 ERA in his career against Minnesota.  He has allowed just 4 earned runs in his last 3 starts against the Twins.  4 earned runs through his last 22 innings pitched against Minnesota shows why I am all over the Indians at home today.  Also, Byrd is 27-9 against the money line in home games vs. an AL team with an on base percentage .330 or worse since 1997.  Cash in with Cleveland as the favorite.

1* on Toronto Blue Jays -136

Toronto takes on one of the worst teams in the league in the Seattle Mariners Wednesday.  Seattle is 9-26 (-19.4 Units) against the money line vs. AL teams scoring 4.7 or less runs/game on the season this season.  The Mariners are just 4-16 (-12.3 Units) against the money line vs. a good bullpen that converts on 75%+ of their save opportunities this season.  Also, Seattle is 2-13 (-10.3 Units) against the money line in road games vs. teams whose hitters strike out 6 or less times/game this season.  Toronto is 14-4 (+10.8 Units) against the money line in home games vs. an AL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.300 to 1.400 over the last 2 seasons.  Seattle is 6-22 (-15.6 Units) against the money line after scoring and allowing 3 runs or less over the last 2 seasons.  The Mariners are scoring just 3.4 runs per game over their last 7 contests.  Shaun Marcum is undefeated with a 1.69 ERA over his last 3 starts.  Take the Blue Jays on the Money Line.

3* on New York Yankees +110

You won’t find the Yankees at a much better price than the one we are getting tonight.  Darrell Rasner is no pushover as he is 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA on the season.  He deserves more wins with the way he has been pitching.  Play Against - Home teams when the money line is +125 to -125 (OAKLAND) - allowing 4.2 or less runs/game on the season (AL) against opponent poor offensive team - scoring <=4.7 runs/game on the season (AL).  This is a 71-47 ML System hitting 60.2% over the last 5 seasons.  The Yankees are scoring 5.4 runs per game over their last 7 games so Rasner should get just enough run support to pick up the victory.  Bet the Yankees on the road.

1 Unit on Reds -135

The Reds have been solid behind Cueto this season and I fully expect that to continue tonight.  The Reds are 10-1 in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a winning record, 7-1 in their last 8 home games vs. a right-handed starter, and an impressive 13-3 in their last 16 home games.  The Reds are 5-0 in Cueto's last 5 starts after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game and 4-0 in Cueto's last 4 home starts.  The Cardinals are only 3-7 in Looper's last 10 starts during game 2 of a series and with the way the Reds have been hitting righties, I expect them to explode for a lot of runs tonight.
