Thrashers star Kovalchuk to miss at least 2 games
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

Atlanta Thrashers star Ilya Kovalchuk will miss at least two games but apparently avoided serious injury to his right knee when he was hurt in Wednesday night's game against Pittsburgh.

Thrashers general manager and interim coach Don Waddell said Kovalchuk would have a ''precautionary'' MRI exam on the knee Thursday afternoon.

Waddell said he was encouraged that Kovalchuk felt better Thursday. He had no substantial swelling in the knee and was walking without a limp.

The news was good, but the Thrashers must adjust to the loss of their top scorer for at least two games while they fight for a playoff spot. Waddell said Kovalchuk would miss Friday's home game against Buffalo and Saturday's game at Washington.

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS

Kovalchuk scored his 38th goal but was injured in a knee-on-knee hit from Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu in the second period. Kovalchuk made a brief return later in the frame for one shift. He missed the third period and will be examined by team doctors on Thursday. ... Colorado defeated Chicago 6-3, but goalie Jose Theodore left after two periods because of back spasms.

FINALLY

IN TROUBLE

Montreal police have issued an arrest warrant former Canadiens star Guy Lafleur, accused of giving contradictory evidence as a witness at his son's bail hearing. Mark Lafleur, 23, faces more than 20 criminal charges, including sexually assaulting a minor, armed assault, uttering threats and forcible confinement between 2004 and 2007. A Quebec judge said the elder Lafleur testified before a court in November that his son was abiding by a court-ordered curfew while he was staying with his parents. But Lafleur later admitted he drove his son to hotels to spend nights with his teenage girlfriend.

SPEAKING

''I meant to finish my check. He ducked away and I barely hit him. I didn't change direction. I just went for a hit.'' - Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu on his hit that knocked Atlanta All-Star Ilya Kovalchuk out of Wednesday night's game with a knee injury.
