Hockey Today - December 18
By ASSOCIATED PRESS

SCOREBOARD Tuesday, Dec. 18

Anaheim at San Jose (10:30 p.m. EST). Two Pacific Division rivals complete a home-and-home series.

STARS Monday

-Tomas Holmstrom, Red Wings, had two goals as Detroit edged Washington 4-3 in a shootout.

SWINGS

Ryan Smyth and Jaroslav Hlinka scored 62 seconds apart early in the first period as Colorado won its third straight and handed Los Angeles its fourth straight loss Monday night, 4-2.

MILESTONE

Colorado's Joel Quenneville recorded his 413th regular-season victory as an NHL head coach Monday night, tying Jack Adams for 18th place after a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles.

TIME AWAY

Chris Simon took a paid leave from the Islanders on Monday, agreeing with the team that he needed time away from hockey following his latest penalty for attempting to injure an opponent. Simon missed the first five games this season while completing a 25-game ban - his sixth NHL suspension - meted out in March. He could be in line for another long penalty after he took down and stepped on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu last weekend.

SURGERY

Toronto defenseman Bryan McCabe had hand surgery Monday and will be out six to eight weeks. McCabe, who had four goals and eight assists in 27 games, broke three bones in his left hand during Saturday's loss at Montreal. Defenseman Anton Stralman was recalled from the AHL's Toronto Marlies, where he had 11 assists in 21 games.

SIDELINED

Vancouver center Brendan Morrison could be out up to 12 weeks after surgery on his right wrist Monday and is expected to remain in a cast at least six weeks. Morrison's 542-game playing streak, the longest current run in the NHL, ended Wednesday night because of the injury. Morrison has eight goals and 12 assists this season.

SPEAKING

''I really believe we deserved two (points). But that's why they're No. 1 because every chance they get, they take advantage of it.'' - Washington interim coach Bruce Boudreau after a 4-3 shootout loss to Detroit on Monday night.

Wild center Koivu still not ready to return
December 17, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Minnesota Wild center Mikko Koivu had pain in his injured left leg during a skate Monday and is not expected to return to the ice soon.

Koivu suffered a broken bone in his leg Nov. 16 when Vancouver defenseman Mattias Ohlund hit him with a two-handed swing of his stick. Ohlund was suspended four games.

Koivu, sidelined for a month, has been skating on his own. The fracture has healed, but he needs to build strength in the leg.

Coach Jacques Lemaire said he hoped to have the Finnish star back within the next two weeks, but Koivu was wary of putting a timetable on his return.

``It's been so long, I forgot his name,'' Lemaire said, joking.

In 19 games, Koivu has five goals and 11 assists.

Another one of Minnesota's top scorers, Pavol Demitra, is fighting the flu. He didn't practice on Monday, and his status is uncertain for the game against Nashville on Tuesday.

The Wild (18-12-2) have struggled to find consistency because of injuries to several key players. But they finished a five-game road trip with victories at Anaheim and Los Angeles over the weekend.

That put them back in a tie for first with Vancouver in the Northwest Division.

Canucks center Morrison may be out up to 12 weeks
ASSOCIATED PRESS

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Vancouver Canucks center Brendan Morrison could be out up to 12 weeks after surgery on his right wrist Monday.

He showed up at B.C. Place on Monday in a cast that ran from his right finger, past his elbow to his upper arm. He's expected to remain in a cast at least six weeks.

Morrison, who jammed his wrist into the boards during an exhibition game on Sept. 26, learned he needed surgery Thursday. Morrison's 542-game playing streak, the longest current run in the NHL, ended Wednesday night when he was forced out of the lineup because of the injury.

Morrison missed his third game Sunday, a 2-1 shootout loss to Edmonton.

Morrison, who has eight goals and 12 assists, is hopeful he will be back with the Canucks for the playoffs.

Vancouver hosts New Jersey Tuesday.

McLean returns; fractured foot KOs Peltonen

After missing more than a month with a broken hand, Panthers forward Brett McLean returned to the lineup Sunday night against the Blackhawks.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, it was to take the place of another injured forward. First-line left wing Ville Peltonen will miss extensive time after fracturing his foot in Saturday's game at Detroit. He flew back to South Florida on Sunday after X-rays revealed "a clean break," coach Jacques Martin said.

"The doctor is going to examine his big toe [today]," Martin said. "We'll know more when the doctor looks at him."

Martin said Peltonen hurt his foot when a shot struck it Dec. 5 against Ottawa, and that he played three more games before breaking it trying to push hard off the ice in the second period Saturday. Peltonen had four goals and nine assists in 32 games.

The timing was right for McLean, who was struck in the hand by a slap shot Nov. 13, to return Sunday, "especially with nobody else available now," but he had been cleared medically and was ready, Martin said.

"It's good to have him back," he said. "He'll bring some energy."

McLean had the second assist on Rostislav Olesz's goal in the first period.

SURGERY FOR VAN RYN

Defenseman Mike Van Ryn will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist this week, Martin said. Baltimore specialist Dr. Thomas Graham will perform the procedure, which will be the third on Van Ryn's wrist in the past year and a half.

"Once they get inside there, we'll have a better idea of where he is and what needs to be done," Martin said, noting there's no timeframe yet on recovery.

HOT-HANDED GOALIE

Backup Craig Anderson was scheduled to start in goal against his former team Sunday, but instead Tomas Vokoun started for the second time in as many nights.

"He's been outstanding and this is a big game for us," Martin said before the game of Vokoun, who came in with a 1.47 GAA and .957 save percentage in his past four games. …

The Panthers, who spent Sunday night in Chicago, will not skate today after flying into Montreal. They'll play the Canadiens on Tuesday to end a four-game trip.
