Chargers vs. Raiders Prediction

NFL Week 5 Predictions: San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland Raiders 10/9/16

Will the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers have enough of a shootout to hit the over when they meet today at 4:25PM ET?

According to the oddsmakers at BetDSI, the Raiders are favored at home, as they are getting odds of -3.5 points against the Chargers. The over/under total for the contest has been set at 51 points. Oakland has won the last two meetings with the Chargers but the two have hit the under in four of their last six encounters.

Bet on Chargers vs. Raiders

The Raiders are coming off a big 28-27 win at Baltimore last week to improve to 3-1 on the season. Oakland is now 3-1 with the over thanks to its offense, which is putting up 27 points and 393.3 yards per game. Derek Carr has thrown for 1,066 yards and nine touchdowns on the year, targeting mostly Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. Oakland will be without leading rusher Latavius Murray today due to turf toe, but the offense should still be able to move the ball effectively on San Diego. The Oakland defense hasn’t been too stellar despite the 3-1 record. The Raiders are giving up 26.5 points and 467.3 yards per game this season. That is the most yards allowed in the NFL.

San Diego is coming off a 35-34 loss to the Saints at home last week to fall to 1-3 on the season. Like Oakland, the Chargers are 3-1 with the over this season. San Diego is putting up 30.3 points per game and 372.5 yards of offense per contest this season. Philip Rivers has thrown for 1,110 yards and 7 touchdowns this year despite being without Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead. Melvin Gordon has found the end zone six times already this year after being shutout all of last season. Defensively, San Diego is giving up 27 points and 389.5 yards per game, including 307.5 passing yards per game. San Diego has been hit hard by injuries in the secondary, but they are hoping the unit gets a boost from first-round pick Joey Bosa, who is expected to make his debut today. Still, Bosa has yet to see any type of NFL action, so his impact is likely to be limited.

This game should be the shootout we all expect. Both defenses are too poor and both quarterbacks are too good for it to be anything otherwise. Hitting 51 points isn’t going to be easy, but I think it will be done here. Carr and the Raiders should start fast and the Chargers can catch up late. There will be plenty of passing yards in this one.
