2018-19 NBA Championship Betting Odds
The Golden State Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2018 NBA Finals on Friday night. To nobody's surprise, the Warriors are also favored to repeat as champions in 2019.
The Favorite
The Warriors opened as 5/4 favorites to win the 2018/19 NBA Championship. No team has better odds and no team has even comparable odds for that matter. The Warriors are expected to keep their core intact, although Kevin Durant does have a player option for the 2019 season. Nick Young, Zaza Pachulia, David West, JaVale McGee, Kevon Looney and Patrick McCaw are Golden State's free agents.
The Challenger
This will change depending on where LeBron James winds up but for now, the Rockets have the next-best odds to win the 2019 championship at 4/1 odds. Houston took Golden State to seven games in the Western Conference Finals and had Chris Paul not gotten hurt, the Rockets may have won that series and beaten the Cavs in the Finals. Paul is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and so are Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute. Clint Capela is a restricted free agent.
The best in the East
The 76ers and Celtics are the teams with the best odds in the East, as Philadelphia is 9/2 to win the championship and the Celtics are 6/1. The Sixers have two starts in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons and are expected to be in the mix for LeBron. The Celtics, meanwhile, took the Cavs to seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals without Kyrie Irving or Gordan Hayward. With those two back next season, Boston is a nice value at 6/1.
The Next Group
The Lakers are 20/1, the Spurs are 25/1 and the Cavs and Heat are both 50/1, respectively, to win the title next year. Some believe the Lakers are the frontrunners to land LeBron this offseason while the Spurs are also expected to pursue James. LeBron and Gregg Popovich are good friends and the Spurs could make an interesting case for James to play with Kawhi Leonard, who has a personal option for 2019. This is assuming that Pop and Leonard get on the same page after a contentious 2018 season in which Kawhi didn't play due to injury.
