Astros drop series opener
Houston lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in the series opener Monday night at Minnesota to snap its modest two-game winning streak. The Twins scored the game’s lone run in the third inning and the Astros were blanked the rest of the way. Justin Verlander was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he allowed one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over six innings. Michael Brantley and Carlos Correa paced the Houston offense as both finished 2-for-4. Alex Bregman went 0-for-2 but drew two walks. Cole will start tonight’s game and comes in with a 1-4 record and a 4.71 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP plus 54 strikeouts over 36 1/3 innings.
Odorizzi tosses gem in win
Jake Odorizzi threw seven shutout innings Monday night in a 1-0 home victory over Houston as Minnesota extended its winning streak to four games. Odorizzi allowed four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk over his seven innings of work, while Blake Parker gave up one hit in the ninth inning to secure his sixth save. Ehire Adrianza provided the game’s only run in his lone at-bat as he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. Nelson Cruz went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit double, while Jonathan Schoop completed the contest 1-for-3 with a double. Michael Pineda gets the start tonight for the Twins and enters with a 2-1 record plus a 5.63 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP with 20 strikeouts over 24 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Houston
The Astros are 14-4 in their last 18 Tuesday games. Houston is 1-4 in Cole’s last five road starts.
Minnesota
The Twins are 23-9 in their last 32 games overall. Minnesota is 5-14 in the last 19 meetings.
Prediction:
Cole’s peripheral numbers are solid, so expect his luck to turn around as soon as tonight against a matchup against a lineup that struggled to put anything together last night. Pineda is a hittable pitcher and the Astros should provide Colo with run support unlike what they did last night for Verlander. This game should be decided while the starting pitchers are on the mound and Houston comes in with the much better one. Go with the visitors.
