2009 Preakness Odds: Contender Hull Possible Sleeper at 18/1 Odds to Win
Do you want to take a shot on an inexperienced, yet red-hot horse for this year’s Preakness Stakes? Look no further than Hull, who oddsmakers have established as a 18/1 long shot.
Hull doesn’t have a very extensive track record, but you can’t beat the start he’s had in 2009. In his debut on February 7 at the Maiden Special Weight at the Fair Grounds, he placed first by a distance of six furlongs. He backed that performance up with another victory at Allowance Opitonal Claiming at Turfway Park on April 2, then won again at the Derby Trail S. at Churchill Downs on April 25.
Even though he’s largely inexperienced, oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.COM have established Hull’s odds to win at 14/1, which certainly doesn’t make him a massive long shot considering Tone It Down is 35/1 to win and Terrain is 25/1 to win. Hull does have massive competition, however, mainly in Rachel Alexandra at 3/2, 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird at 7/2, and Kentucky Derby runner up Pioneerof the Nile at 6/1.
It appears that Hull is the perfect boom or bust pick for this year’s Preakness Stakes. Since he doesn’t have a ton of race experience, there’s a huge possibility that he could disappoint at the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes going up against the toughest competition of his career.
However, how could you not like his track record to this point? Hull has only raced three times this year, yet he has won every time. Plus, Mine That Bird gave future long shots a fighting chance when he won the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago after entering the race as 50/1 to win.
