UL Lafayette at Arkansas State: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Arkansas State Red Wolves (+2.5)

When it comes to offensive production, the Arkansas State Red Wolves have been as inconsistent as it gets. The Red Wolves will need to be at their explosive best Tuesday night as they welcome one of the nation's most formidable offenses in the UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. Arkansas State is coming off an impressive 48-24 drubbing of the Idaho Vandals 10 days ago but will be in tough against the Cajuns, who have reeled off four consecutive victories.

When they put points on the board, the Red Wolves have a great deal of success - and when they don't, a loss is nearly automatic. Arkansas State is averaging better than 50 points per game in its three victories - including a 62-11 laugher in its season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff - and fewer than 12 points in its three losses. UL Lafayette has steamrolled its way to the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings, averaging 47.5 points during its winning streak.

LINE: Arkansas State has held steady as a 2.5-point home underdog.

WEATHER: Temperatures at Liberty Bank Stadium will be in the low-50s with clear skies and wind blowing diagonally out of the southwest at 8 mph.

ABOUT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE (4-2, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference): After relying on the arm of standout quarterback Terrance Broadway in consecutive wins over Akron and Texas State, the Ragin' Cajuns used a stout ground attack to subdue the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 37-20 in their previous game. Alonzo Harris led the way with 115 rushing yards and a pair of scores as UL Lafayette finished with three touchdowns on the ground, amassing 198 of its 254 rushing yards in the opening half. Broadway ranks third in the conference in quarterback efficiency, while Harris is third in rushing yards per game.

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE (3-3, 1-0): Senior quarterback Adam Kennedy had the game of his career last time out, erupting for a career-high 375 passing yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Vandals. The strong performance vaulted the Utah State transfer into third in the Sun Belt in passing yardage while earning him conference offensive player of the week honors. David Oku led the ground attack with 69 yards and a touchdown, the 24th of his four-year collegiate career. The Red Wolves have one of the best third-down conversion rates in the country, making good on 48 percent of their attempts.

TRENDS:

* UL Lafayette is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games following a SU win.
* Arkansas State is 0-4-1 ATS in its last five games overall.
* Over is 18-8 in Ragin' Cajuns' last 26 October games.
* Under is 22-7-2 in Red Wolves' last 31 games against teams with winning records.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. The Red Wolves cruised to a 50-27 victory in their previous encounter last season at Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns lead the all-time series 21-19-1.

2. Arkansas State has turned the ball over just six times in its first six games.

3. Red Wolves WR Julian Jones needs just 49 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his career.

La-Lafayette at Arkansas State
By Brian Edwards

Matchup: Louisiana Lafayette at Arkansas State
Venue: Liberty Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, Arkansas (Grass)
Date: Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013
Time/TV: 8:00 p.m. ET - ESPN2
Line: Louisiana Lafayette -2½, Over/Under 67
Last Meeting: 2012, Arkansas State (+3) 50 at Louisiana Lafayette 27

For a second straight week, gamblers have a Sun Belt game with a side and total to wager on Tuesday night. Once again, Louisiana-Lafayette (4-2 straight up, 3-3 against the spread) is on the road to take on Arkansas State.

As of late Monday night, most betting shops had the Ragin’ Cajuns favored by 2½ with a total of 67½ or 68. The Red Wolves are +115 on the money line. For first half wagers, UL-Laf. is a one-half point favorite with a total of 34.

Mark Hudspeth’s team captured a 37-20 win at Western Kentucky last Tuesday. UL-Laf. improved to 16-4 ATS in its last 20 games as a road underdog. Trailing 10-0 with more than six remaining in the second quarter, the game turned when Al-Damion Riles made an interception for the Ragin’ Cajuns and took it back to the house 99 yards.

Then just before halftime, UL-L’s Alonzo Harris scored on a short TD run to put his team ahead, 13-10. QB Terrance Broadway would throw a TD pass and run for another score to put the Hilltoppers away.

For the season, Broadway is completing 63.6 percent of his passes for 1,243 yards with an 11/4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The athletic southpaw signal caller has also run for five TDs.

Arkansas St. (3-3 SU, 1-4-1 ATS) is in the midst of a 0-4-1 ATS slump in its last five games. The Red Wolves have lost all three of their road games, but they have won all three of their home outings while going 2-1 ATS.

Bryan Harsin’s squad bounced back from road defeats at Missouri and at Memphis to beat Idaho 48-24 on Oct. 12. But ASU failed to cover the number as 27-point home favorites against the Vandals.

Adam Kennedy threw for 375 yards and four TDs in his best game of the season. David Oku ran for 69 yards and one TD, while Julian Jones had 4 receptions for 135 yards and one TD. Darion Griswold had five catches for 89 yards and two TDs, while J.D. McKissic had nine receptions for 80 yards and one score.

Kennedy, the transfer from Utah St., has a 67.2 completion rate and 1,552 passing yards. Kennedy has a 7/3 TD-INT ratio. Oku hasn’t produced at his 2012 rate, rushing for 396 yards and 3.9 yards per carry. He does have five TDs on the ground.

Since 2005. Arkansas St. has struggled to a 2-5 spread record in its seven games as a home underdog. Meanwhile, UL-Laf. has compiled a 1-3 spread record in four games as a road favorite under Hudspeth.

The ‘over’ is 4-2 overall for UL-Laf., 2-2 in its four previous road assignments. Totals have been an overall wash for the Red Wolves, but they have seen the ‘over’ go 3-0 in their home games.

When these schools met last season, Arkansas St. cruised to a 50-27 win as a 3 ½-point road favorite. Oku ran for 83 yards and one TD for the winners, while the 77 combined points catapulted ‘over’ the 62 combined points.

Broadway threw three TD passes in the losing effort, but he was intercepted three times.

For the first since 1981-82, Arkansas St. has won back-to-back games in this rivalry. However, the Ragin’ Cajuns have taken the cash six of the last eight head-to-head encounters.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets

Vandy QB Austyn Carta-Samuels is ‘doubtful’ at Texas A&M after suffering a knee injury in Saturday’s win over Georgia. Carta-Samuels has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards with a 10/7 TD-INT ratio. The senior, a transfer from Wyoming, also has five rushing TDs. Patton Robinette, a redshirt freshman, connected on 9-of-15 passes for 107 yards in helping orchestrate the 31-27 come-from-behind victory over the Bulldogs. Robinette had one rushing TD. He will most likely make his first career start against the Aggies.

Boise St. senior QB Joe Southwick is out for at least the rest of the regular season after breaking his ankle in a non-covering win over Nevada.

South Carolina senior QB Connor Shaw (knee) is ‘doubtful’ at Missouri, but ‘doubtful’ for most players means Shaw has a 50-50 chance so check his status later in the week.

Alabama safety Vinnie Sunseri is out for the season after injuring his leg in a 52-0 home win over Arkansas. Landon Collins, a true sophomore and five-star recruit, will take Sunseri’s starting spot.

Oregon St. QB Sean Mannion has a sensational 29/3 TD-INT ratio.

Best ATS records: Houston (6-0), Missouri (6-0-1), Wisconsin (6-0-1), Oregon (6-1) and FAU (6-1).

California remains the nation’s only school that has yet to cover the spread in 2012. The Bears are 0-7 ATS.

UCLA’s leading rusher Jordon James has missed back-to-back games and is ‘questionable’ Saturday at Oregon. Most indications are that Ducks’ speedster De’Anthony Thomas will return against the Bruins after missing four straight games.
