Arkansas State vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Betting Preview
By: Marcus DiNitto
Sportingnews.com

The Sun Belt conference offers up a Tuesday-night tilt for us wagering enthusiasts that serves as a nice side dish to Game 1 of the World Series. Louisiana-Lafayette, playing in its second straight Tuesday game, is a short underdog at home vs. Arkansas State (8p.m. ET, ESPN2).

A week ago, the Ragin' Cajuns ran all over Texas State, winning 34-10 as 2.5-point road underdogs, for their first cover in five games. ULL sits at 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS on the season.

In its last outing, Arkansas State rolled over Georgia State while laying 10.5 points on the road.

The Line: Arkansas State -3, Total: 56.5

Line movement: The spread and total have both been on the move since opening numbers were posted. The Wynn opened the Red Wolves -2.5 Sunday night, moved to -2 nearly immediately, but was bet the other way, to -3, on the day of the game. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook opened the total at 54 on Monday but was up to 56.5 on Tuesday.

Both of tonight’s combatants are 2-0 in the Sun Belt, after facing some stiff out-of-conference opponents.

Arkansas State outlook: Arkansas State traversed through a three-game stretch of at Tennessee, at Miami and vs. Utah State before starting its Sun Belt schedule. The Red Wolves lost but covered as 16-point dogs against the Vols (34-19); were blown out in Miami as 14.5-point dogs (41-20); and won outright in overtime as 3-point favorites over Utah State (21-14). It was the Aggies’ first game without star QB Chuckie Keeton, however.

The Red Wolves come into Tuesday’s game on a three-game win and cover streak, having beaten Louisiana Monroe 28-14 as 10.5-point favorites before their 52-10 win over Georgia State.

ULL outlook: Lafayette, meanwhile, had not impressed until last week. It snuck by Georgia State 34-31 as a 16-point home favorite the previous week, lost outright 48-20 as a 16-point favorite against Louisiana Tech in September and couldn’t keep things close enough against Ole Miss (56-16) or Boise State (34-9) to get the cash.

UL-Lafayette will be without top receiver Jamal Robinson tonight.

Ratings, trends and stats: The Don Best/Linemakers Power Ratings have Arkansas State 4.5-points better than ULL on a neutral field, which suggests tonight's point spread is pretty close to where it should be, given a 2- or 2.5-point home-field advantage.

ULL won last year’s meeting 23-7 at Arkansas State. The game was a pick ‘em and stayed UNDER the 69-point total. The Red Wolves won the previous two meetings, but failed to cover as 11-point favorites in a 30-21 home victory in 2011.

ULL has covered the spread in five of the last six meetings, and has won seven of the last eight meetings at home.

The Cajuns, though, haven’t been getting it done at home, as they're on a 1-5 ATS run there.

Some trends on the total:
-- The total has stayed UNDER In six of Arkansas State's last seven games
-- The total has stayed UNDER In eight of Arkansas State's last 11 on the road
-- The total has gone UNDER In four of the last six meetings between these teams
-- 11 of ULL's last 12 home games have gone OVER

The Times-Picayune has this bit of insight: “The Red Wolves rely on an uptempo offense and run-stopping defense. Arkansas State is 38th in the nation in total offense, averaging 452.2 yards per game. Quarterback Fredi Knighten has passed for 1,291 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 333 and six touchdowns. Running back Michael Gordon has carried for 441 yards and three touchdowns. He averages 9.4 yards per carry. ...

“UL-Lafayette is allowing 426.7 yards per game on defense, 85th in the nation. But the Cajuns only allowed 270 versus Texas State.”
