DAVE COKIN

LOS ANGELES DODGERS AT CINCINNATI REDS
PLAY: LOS ANGELES DODGERS +115

This will be one of the more concise breakdowns you’ll find in this space during the course of the year. That’s because I’m basing this more on the eye test than anything else. It’s not that I can’t produce some decent stats to support this play. But to me the big key is that the side I like appears to be kicking it into the gear they were supposed to be at from opening day.

The Dodgers are getting warm. I’m not about to suggest they’re set to go off on another 42-8 run like we witnessed last season. But this very talented squad is starting to click. If that’s indeed the case, then the line on tonight’s game with the Reds is going to look like it was a bargain when assessing numbers that could be appearing within just a week or so. You won’t be finding many opportunities to grab the Dodgers at a decent dog price when facing a .500 neighborhood team like Cincinnati.

Beyond the impression I have that the buy signal for the Dodgers has been sent, there is some tangible stuff to include tonight. The Dodgers have been outstanding on the road, with a stellar 22-12 ledger and they’ve certainly hit better when they’re in the role of visitor. If you want to make a case that LA plays with a little better sense of urgency on the road where they don’t assume a win every time out, I’m willing to listen.

The tough part of the task tonight is beating Johnny Cueto. Let’s face it, this guy is tough. But Cueto has had no luck throughout his career with the Dodgers, and the truth is that the Reds ace has not been at his sharpest lately. As for Hyun-Jin Ryu, he also isn’t in best form recently, but Ryu has shown real knack for being able to generally limit the damage even when he’s a little off.

I would call the pitching matchup pretty much of a wash. The Dodgers have the better offense here, and while LA has been a dynamo on the road, the Reds have a losing record at home. The finishing touch is my perception that the Dodgers are getting hot. Add in plus money with the current line and it’s not a bad spot to give the Dodgers a roll.

Jesse Schule

Chicago vs. Pittsburgh
Pick: Chicago

Who would have thought that the Cubs would turn it on over the past month? Well I guess it comes as no surprise to me, as I have been making money backing the Cubs in recent weeks. I cashed in another winner last night, as Chicago upset the Pirates as a +$152 ML dog.

They are a smaller underdog here in Game 3, but with a mismatch on the mound, I think the Cubs should be a small favorite. After all, they have won seven of their last 10 overall.

Jason Hammel will toe the slab for Chicago, and he's coming off another spectacular performance. Hammel (6-3, 2.53 ERA) tossed seven scoreless frames, fanning seven in a home win over Miami his last time out. He's already beat the Pirates twice this year, going 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA.

The Pirates hand the ball to 23 year old Brandon Cumpton, who hasn't impressed much so far this season. Cumpton (1-2, 6.51 ERA) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first win of the season at home over Milwaukee his last time out. He got rocked by the Dodgers prior to that though, surrendering 11 runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Bryan Power

Chicago vs. Pittsburgh
Pick: Chicago

While Jeff Samardzija gets most of the press for his bad fortune while at the same time pitching well, it just might be Jason Hammel that's been the strongest starter in the Cubs' rotation this season. The right-hander has a 0.881 WHIP in 12 starts so far and has the sixth best ERA in the NL to boot....

With the Cubs as the underdog and coming off a 7-3 win last night here in Pittsburgh, they look like a solid value on the money line to me.  This is a team that despite being 10 games under .500 has only been outscored by nine runs for the season.  Compare that to the Bucs, who are four games under .500 yet are -20 in run differential.  Yesterday's win by the Cubs spoiled the much hyped major league debut for Pittsburgh's Gregory Polanco.  I expect his presence at the big league level to be one of the few bright spots for the Pirates moving forward.

The pitching of tonight's starter Brandon Cumpton has certainly not been a highlight this year in the Steel City.  Cumpton has a 6.51 ERA and 1.554 WHIP in his five previous starts. The team brought the bats in his last start, beating Milwaukee 15-5, but that isn't likely to be the case here against Hammel, who has thrown seven scoreless innings in B2B starts.

Stephen Nover

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Play: St. Louis Cardinals -131

The Rays continue to be strong fade material. Tampa Bay has the worst record in the majors and is 1-10 in its last 11 games versus a right-hander.

Tampa Bay is 1-14 in its last 15 games and has to face righty Michael Wacha, one of the best young pitchers in baseball. Wacha has made 13 starts and not allowed more than three runs in any of them.

Scoring figures to be a real problem for the Rays, who have been shut out in their last 28 innings.

Tampa Bay starter southpaw Erik Bedard has a 5.60 ERA in five outings against the Cardinals during the past three seasons. The Cardinals have defeated the last two lefties they've gone against - Mark Buehrle and Jason Vargas - during the past seven days. Those two are much better than the over-the-hill Bedard.

The Cardinals' hitting is a concern, but they have scored five or more runs in four of their last seven games.

Scott Spreitzer

Los Angeles Kings vs. NY Rangers
Play: Los Angeles Kings +126

I'm recommending a play on the L.A. Kings on Wednesday night.  Los Angeles has a chance to close out the series with the sweep, which would give them their second Stanley Cup win in three seasons.  The Kings have shown they're simply too big and too physical for the NY Rangers.  They're also a well-oiled machine with Darryl Sutter calling the shots.  Sutter is the master line manipulator and has proven time-and-time again through the first three games to make the correct adjustments, virtually on the fly.  The Rangers will be game at the start, but the Kings have been a fierce penalty killing team in the Finals, holding the Rangers to 1-of-14 chances with the extra man.  Their "special teams" play, along with their physical advantage and Sutter's matchup adjustments will prove too much for the Rangers.  I'm recommending a play on the underdog Kings on Wednesday night.

Art Aronson

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Play: St. Louis Cardinals -131

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to find ways to lose games and I expect they fall again in Game 2 of this inter-league series. The visiting Cardinals will send right-hander Michael Wacha (4-4, 2.61 ERA) to the hill. Wacha fell to 4-4, allowing three runs over six innings in Thursday's loss to the Royals. Despite the setback, the hard throwing Wacha has been consistently solid this season and should give a struggling Rays team a lot of trouble in this matchup. The Rays counter with lefty Erik Bedard (3-4, 3.61 ERA); Bedard was the pitcher that helped the Rays snap a 10 game losing streak last week but they’ve since started a new run of futility. Note that Bedard is 2-3 with a 5.60 ERA lifetime versus the Cardinals. The Rays have lost four in a row and 14 of their last 15 games headed into this contest; Tampa Bay has an ugly streak of 28 innings where it has failed to score a run. Also note that the Rays have gone an abysmal 10 for 101 (.099) with runners in scoring position during their lengthy slide, including 0 for 19 the last three games. St. Louis is trending in the opposite direction, it’s now won three in a row and has held its’ opponents to zero runs over that stretch. I think Wacha and the Cards are worth the price of admission in this spot.

Dennis Macklin

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Play: Chicago Cubs +115

The Cubs are playing their best ball in a long time winning six of their last eight and would seem to have much the best of the pitching matchup tonight at PNC Park. Jason Hammel is 6-3 on the year and off a pair of seven-inning shutout outings allowing just 10 hits with a sweet 1/16 BB/K ratio. He's never lost to the Pirates in limited starts, 4-0 with a 3.58 ERA in five chances. The Bucs counter with Brandon Compton who is 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA in five spots starts. That ERA balloons to 8.30 in his last three. In fact, he's allowing 31 runners in his L16 innings of work with a whip of 2.000+. The Blue Bears aren't much on the road (10-22) but would appear to have no excuses here.

Rob Vinciletti

Oakland vs. Los Angeles
Play: Under 8

On Wednesday the free MLB Totals Play is on the under in the Oakland at LA. Angels game. Rotation numbers 921/922 at 10:05 eastern. Nice pitching match here with Jered Weaver for the Angels and Tommy Milone for Oakland. Weaver has pitched under in all 12 Career home starts vs the A/s. He has pitched 51 innings allowing just 14 runs at home vs Oakland. He has also allowed just 12 runs in his last 30 innings pitched at home in the month of June the past few years. This year has a solid 2.79 home era and has allowed just 6 runs in 30 home innings going under in 3 of his last 4 here at home. Milone for Oakland has a 2.89 era in his last 3 games and 12 runs in 25 innings in road June starts. Milone has gone under in his last 4 road starts and has allowed 4 runs in 11 innings here vs LA. Oakland has gone under in 3 of 4 as a road dog from +100 to +125. The Athletics also have a solid 2.42 road bullpen era. In the series here 15 of the last 23 have stayed under and that's what we will recommend tonight.

Marc Lawrence

Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies
Prediction: Atlanta Braves

The Braves and Rockies meet at Coors Field in Game Three of this four-game set Wednesday night where Atlanta sends the steady serves of Julio Teheran to the mound. Teheran toes the rubber in solid KW form with 19 strikeouts and 3 walks his last three starts. The crafty right-hander is also 10-3 with a 1.89 ERA in his thirteen team starts to go along with a super 0.93 WHIP on the season. That being said, it ain't broke and we're not fixing it. We recommend a 1-unit play on Atlanta.

This is a clear value play, as the Tribe are the better and hotter team right now. Play on Cleveland and get about +125! Indians are 7-1 in their last 8 games vs. a right-handed starter. Indians are 5-1 in their last 6 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game. Indians are 9-2 in their last 11 overall. Indians are 9-2 in their last 11 games on grass. Indians are 5-2 in their last 7 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5. Royals are 8-20 in their last 28 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400. Royals are 2-7 in their last 9 vs. American League Central. Royals are 2-6 in Venturas last 8 home starts with the total set at 7.0-8.5. Royals are 2-6 in Venturas last 8 home starts. Jim Feist

Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies
Pick: Colorado Rockies

Atlanta comes to town with a terrible offense, 28th in baseball in runs scored, 26th in on base percentage. The Braves are 2-6 in their last 8 vs. a team with a losing record. Ace Julio Teheran goes here, but he's dominant at home while is ERA more than doubles on the road -- and Coors Field is a tough place to pitch! Especially against the Colorado offense, 3rd in baseball in runs scored and on base percentage, tops in batting average and slugging. Colorado is a home dog and the Braves have never seen starter Tyler Matzek, the best Triple-A starting pitcher in the Rockies' minor-league system this year. Grab the home dog;

Washington at San Francisco
Play: Washington

Tanner Roark has been a stud that's being overlooked by his starting counterparts on the Nationals. You are likely going to overpay for a Strasburg or Fister, but Roark and Treinen are your unknown bargains. The Nationals are a healthy group right now and knocking the cover off the ball. With the best bullpen in baseball we will jump at the chance to get the Nats as a dog.

River City Sharps

Tampa Bay Rays +115

OK, before you all ask if we have lost our minds (you wouldn't be the only ones!) in looking at the Tampa Bay Rays, at least hear us out. We are aware that the Rays have dropped 14 of their last 15 games and their offense has been completely anemic this season. We also understand that they are facing Cards stud Michael Wacha (4-4, 2.61) tonight in game two of the series. We also know that they have been shut out in three consecutive games! With all of that under consideration, we are going to recommend a play tonight on the home doggie trying to get the ship righted. The Rays will send out Erik Bedard (3-4, 3.61) who has actually been really effective for the Rays but simply hasn't gotten the run support. The most important thing we are looking at in this game is the fact the Bedard is a lefty and the Cardinals have simply not demonstrated the ability to consistently hit left-handed pitching. The Cards are 2-8 in their last 10 interleague games against left-handed starters and they are 0-7 in Wacha's last seven road starts. Regression to the mean and the desperate nature of this game for the Rays leads us towards the home team tonight.

Sean Murphy

Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels
Prediction: Oakland Athletics

The Angels are rolling along right now, having won five games in a row, including the first two games of this series. I look for the A's to bounce back and stretch out their margin atop the A.L. West tonight.

Jered Weaver may be the bigger name, but A's starter Tom Milone has been every bit as good lately, allowing just nine earned runs over his last six starts, with the A's winning five of those contests. Oakland is 6-3 in Milone's nine previous outings against the Angels over the course of his career.

We've seen some regression from Weaver over his last three starts, as he's been tagged for 10 earned runs on 23 hits in 18 innings of work. Note that for as well as he's pitched over the course of the season, the Angels have still only managed to go 7-6 in his 13 starts.

There's no question, the Angels are hot right now, but they're by no means invincible. The A's know that they need to stop the bleeding during a rare slump, and I'm confident they'll do exactly that tonight in Anaheim.

Jimmy Boyd

Philadelphia Phillies -132

I'll take my chances on the Phillies at home with their ace Cole Hamels on the mound. Hamels got off to a bit of a slow start in 2014, but has been rock solid of late. He's got a 2.08 ERA and 1.015 WHIP over his last 3 starts and has allowed 1 earned run or less in 4 of his last 6 starts and has not pitched fewer than 7 innings in a start since early May.

The Padres will counter with Tyson Ross, who comes in with a solid 3.22 ERA on the season. However, Ross has not been near as sharp on the road, where he's posted a 4.41 ERA and 1.616 WHIP over 6 starts. San Diego is just 1-4 in Ross' last 5 road starts as an underdog of +110 to +150 and 1-5 in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record.

Philadelphia is 12-5 in their last 17 games when their opponent scores 2 runs or less in their previous contest, 5-1 in their last 6 home games against a team with a losing road record and 7-1 in Hamels' last 8 starts after throwing 120+ pitches in his last appearance.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Wednesday, June 11

Brandon Shively

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Houston Astros
Play: Arizona Diamondbacks +111

I like the DBacks in this game as an underdog.

They are leading the NL with a .309 BA/ .514 SLG% the last 7 days. Goldschmidt and Montero are on fire with 6 homeruns and 19 RBI over the last week and I feel the DBacks are a live dog with an offense that his scoring 6.7 runs a game the last 7 days. They are hitting .278 on the season vs. left-handed starters, scoring 4.8 runs per game. I will remind you that Arizona torched lefty Clayton Kershaw for 7 runs in a game last month and Keuchel is a southpaw as well and there is potential for him to get rocked as well.

The Dbacks will have McCarthy on the mound who has a 1-8 record on the season and not many bettors will even give him a shot of winning tonight. But looking closer, McCarthy has a 29/4 K/BB mark in his last 7 starts and is a groundball pitcher with a 141 GB/ 109 FB mark on the season. The only Astro player that has ever seen McCarthy before is Dexter Fowler. I will give McCarthy the advantage as he has the edge since the Astros really don't know what to expect from him. I will also note that McCarthy has had 4 starts this season where he has allowed 2 ER or fewer.

The Astros will have their ace Keuchel on the rubber, but I want to fade him the same way I did when he was installed as a favorite on 5/31 vs. Baltimore as the Orioles won the game 4-1.  Keuchel is a strong pitcher, but I feel he nor the Astros are ready to be inserted as a favorite quite yet. Houston is 2-3 on the season as a home favorite, while the D'Backs are 10-6 as a road dog of +100 to +150. Looking closer, the Astros are 0-4 in Keuchel's last 4 starts as a favorite, and are 0-4 in Keuchel's last 4 starts vs. the NL west.

Arizona is now 4-0 in their last 4 interleague games as an underdog and are 8-2 in their last 10 road games vs. a team with a losing record.  Historically, Arizona has owned the Astros in the past as they are 10-1 the last 11 meetings in Houston and are 21-5 the last 26 meetings overall.

Jack Jones

Cincinnati Reds -117

After dropping the first two games of this series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, I look for the Cincinnati Reds to come out highly motivated tonight to get a victory in Game 3.  I really like their chances of getting back in the win column with their ace on the mound.

Johnny Cueto has been one of the most underrated starters in the game over the last few seasons.  The right-hander went 9-5 with a 2.31 ERA in 2011, 19-9 with a 2.78 ERA in 2012, and 5-2 with a 2.82 ERA in an injury-shortened 2013 season.

Cueto has carried over his success into 2014, going 5-5 with a 1.97 ERA and 0.792 WHIP in 13 starts.  He is also 3-3 with a 1.87 ERA and 0.717 WHIP in seven home starts this season, and he has posted a 3.19 ERA and 1.205 WHIP in seven career starts against Los Angeles.

The Reds are 68-26 in their last 94 after allowing five runs or more in their previous game.  Cincinnati is 9-2 in its last 11 games after losing the first two games of a series.  The Reds are 11-0 in Cueto's last 11 starts vs. a team with a winning record.  Cincinnati is 22-6 in Cueto's last 28 starts as a home favorite.

3 UNIT PLAY

Baltimore/ Boston Under 9 (-115): The first two games of this series has yielded just 5 total runs and I expect this one to be low scoring as well. The Under is now 5-0 the last 5 meetings in Baltimore, while the Under is also 13-3-1 in Chen's last 17 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150. The Orioles have really struggled to score at home, where they have averaged just 3.33 rpg on the year. Last night they were shutout for 6.2 innings by Brandon Workman, a pitcher they only saw in relief once and tonight they face Rubby De La Rosa, who they have never seen. Wei-Yin Chen comes in with a 3.69 home ERA and will be facing a Boston offense that has scored 1 run total in the first 2 games of this series and just 2.9 rpg in the first 8 games of this road trip. Runs will be hard to come by at Camden Yards tonight.
