Milwaukee Brewers take on Miami Marlins

The second of a three game series is today’s baseball betting focus as N.L. Central leading Milwaukee Brewers take on Miami Marlins. Brewers out-slugging Marlins 9-5 in the opener of this set have Wily Peralta (4-3, 2.18 ERA) schedule to take the ball. The right-hander hitting a rough spot is 0-2 the past three (0-3 TSR) and has just one 'W' the past five trips to the mound (1-4 TSR). Peralta trades pitches with Jacob Turner heading to the hill 0-2 on the campaign (2-3 TSR) saddled with a 6.59 ERA. The shaky right-hander off back-2-back losses giving up 8 runs on 14 hits is now 0-9 in seventeen trips to the mound with a terrible 3-14 team start record over the span. Given Marlins have lost five consecutive vs Brew Crew, 15-of-20 meetings and given how Marlins have performed w/Turner on the mound the Brewers are worth a look.

MLB Odds and Picks

LAS VEGAS -- We've got a nice pitching matchup at Pittsburgh tonight between a pair of former No. 1 overall draft picks. Stephen Strasburg (3-3, 3.38 ERA) makes his fifth road start of the season and will be looking for his first victory away from home while Gerrit Cole (4-3, 3.84) is still looking for that groove he found during the Pirates' playoff run in 2013. In both cases, the pitchers' up and down performances mirror their teams' play thus far into the season.

The Pirates had jumped out of the gate quickly over the past three seasons, but have experienced a playoff hangover of sorts with a 21-16 record mired in fourth-place of the NL East, seven games behind Milwaukee. The good news is they have won three straight and with a win tonight they'll match a season-high four-game winning streak.

Cole has a lot in his favor tonight just because he'll be pitching at PNC Park where he is 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA over his past six starts. Over his past three starts overall, he's had an almost identical stat line going seven innings and allowing three runs in each with the Bucs going 2-1 in those games.

The big issue with Cole during his first full season in the majors has been serving up the long ball. He's already given up seven homers in 58.2 innings, the same amount he gave up in 117.1 innings last season.

At stake for Strasburg tonight is trying to keep the Nationals from dropping below .500 for the first time this season. With Friday's 4-3 loss, the Nationals have matched a season-high three-game losing streak and have now lost five of their last six to the Pirates.

Strasburg has gone 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA in four May starts. He's pitched his heart out, but has only received seven runs of support over those games. In 10 starts this season, Strasburg has allowed more than three runs only twice. Prior to the Nats' current two-game losing streak behind Strasburg, they had won four straight contests started by their ace.

There has been a noticeable change with his strikeout totals lately. He had a season-low four Ks in seven innings on Monday against the Reds, and hasn't had more than six in his past four starts. Compare that to his first six turns in which he posted a 14.02 K-rate.

Both teams have averaged only 3.9 runs per game. The Nationals are 20-1 this season when scoring four runs or more while going 4-23 when they don't.

The Nationals were 3-0 all-time against Pittsburgh behind Strasburg before losing last July, one day after Cole made his only start against Washington, a 5-1 win. In both instances, the games stayed UNDER and that might be the way to go in tonight's mtachup as well where Strasburg is a -115 favorite with a total set at 6.5 runs.

Saturday selections:

Pirates (Cole) +105 vs. Nationals

Nationals/Pirates UNDER 6.5 (-110)

Dodgers (Haren) -126 at Phillies

Royals (Shields) +102 at Angels
