Free Picks: Service Plays for Friday, December 20

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Friday, December 20

Dave Price

Utah Jazz +7½

Utah continues to be undervalued because of the terrible start it got off to, but the Jazz have been a different team since Trey Burke came back from injury. The Jazz have especially been undervalued on the road where they are on a 7-3 ATS run. Utah also gets a boost from the return of Marvin Williams. It is 6-4 this season with him in the lineup. The Hawks are off back-to-back double-digit wins but are 1-10 ATS after 2 consecutive wins by 10 points or more over the last 3 seasons. They are also just 4-13 ATS in home games off a home win over the last 2 seasons. Take the points.

Houston Rockets vs. Indiana Pacers
Play: Houston Rockets +5½

The Houston Rockets visit the Indiana Pacers on Friday night. The Rockets are the highest scoring team in the NBA averaging 107 points per game. The Rockets defense on the other hand is near the bottom surrendering almost 102 points per game. James Harden is the Rockets leading scorer, and off season acquisition Dwight Howard leads the team in Rebounds and blocks. Houston is coming off a drubbing of the Bulls who are without star guard Derrick Rose.

The Indiana Pacers are the leagues number one scoring defense only giving up 90 per contest. This could be a real test of wills. The Pacers D has begun to leak a little lately as they have given up 98 per game over their last eight games. They are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Heat on Wednesday night as they were outscored 12-2 in the last few minutes of that game.

I’m not sure the Rockets can go in here and get the win but I like them to keep it close as it is a real measuring stick for them. I am leaning to the Rockets getting the 5.5 points.

Bruce Marshall

Cal Santa Barbara at Utah State
Pick: Cal Santa Barbara

Rematch of USU's 71-64 win at the Thunderdome back on November 16. A couple of major differences from the first meeting, however. UCSB's punishing 6-7, 240-lb. rebound machine PF Alan Williams (24.1 rpg) missed that November clash due to injury, and now the Utags' 6-10 C Jarred Shaw (16.1 ppg) is on suspension. So it's doubtful we'll see USU control the boards as it did by 35-23 count last month, and Shaw's absence figures as a major concern for Stew Morrill in hopes of slowing down the rampaging Williams, who's also pulling down 10.3 caroms pg. UCSB already owns covers at UNLV (also a SU Gaucho win) and Colorado, and the Gauchos are familiar with the Logan venue after last night's game vs. Troy on same court. Play UCSB

SPORTS WAGERS

Washington +108 over CAROLINA

OT included. This is strictly a situational wager. Washington is rested, having been off for two days and they have won four of their past six games while scoring four goals or more in all four of their wins against Nashville, Tampa Bay, the Rangers and Philly. There is no reason for the Caps to be unprepared here.

This wager is all about fading the Hurricanes. Don’t get us wrong, we like this team very much and trust there will be some great profit potential in playing them later on. However, having paid close attention to this league for decades, we can tell you this is an extremely unfavorable spot for the host. The Canes have had one home game in December and that came back on December 6 against the Sharks after a two game trip to Washington and Nashville. After the game against San Jose, Carolina went on a four game trip through Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Phoenix. That trip ended last Saturday and the ‘Canes have been off since. That’s almost six full days of rest after some extensive travel this month. A long rest is not beneficial and you it’s even worse after extensive travel. As much as we don’t like to back the Capitals, the Hurricanes figure to be extremely lethargic and beatable tonight so a play on Washington is warranted.

My free play for tonight is in college basketball, as I am gearing up for a big weekend in college football with the start of the bowl games. I love this game tonight, though, about 4 hours away from me at Cal Riverside, as the Highlanders are hosting Illinois-Chicago, and I love the Flames to get it done on the road.

UIC won last year's meeting, 59-52, and the Highlanders are much worse than they were in 2012. The Flames are eyeing their third straight win tonight, while UC-Riverside comes into this game with a 3-6 mark after losing its previous two outings versus Northern Colorado and Air Force.

UIC is in after an 88-61 victory against Purdue Calumet at home this past Tuesday, as five separate Flames reached double-digits, led by senior Jordan Harks, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds - his second double-double of the season. Also contributing were freshman Pat Birt and sophomore Jake Wiegand, who notched career-highs with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

What has intensified for this team has been the defense, which collected a season-best 12 steals and outscored the Peregrines in the paint, 50-22.

And if you want to talk about level of competition, after Wednesday night’s games were played, UIC’s 11 opponents so far this season have a combined record of 79-42 for a .653 winning percentage. After Oakland (89-37, .706), the Flames tout the toughest non-conference schedule in terms of opponent record among Horizon League schools.

Look for the Flames to burn the Highlanders on the road.

Friday freebie is the Heat over the Kings.

I know Miami could be in a flat spot after their comeback win over Indiana on Wednesday, but Kings aren't exactly showing too much resistance the longer their road trips wears on.

Sacto was outscored by 19 points in the 4th quarter on Wednesday to drop to just 2-7 straight up, and 3-5-1 against the spread on the road this season.

Miami has won the last 9 series meetings, so the chances of a Kings outright win is quite remote. Plus the points you ask? Well, Miami is 7-2 against the spread in those 9 wins, and they are 18-4 overall against the spread (9-2 at home) the past 24 times they have faced the Kings.

Yes, LeBron's ankle is not 100%, but playing against a Sacramento team they have simply dominated should be no issue come the end of the night.

Take the Heat.

Free play of the day on the Sacramento Kings over Miami grabbing the double digits on the road.

Not sure if the "Queens" have enough firepower to win this game outright, but they don't have to. Just need them to stay in the game long enough not to get blown out and all is good.

We catch Miami in a tough spot here with Dwayne Wade not 100%, LeBron James dealing with an ankle injury, and the Heat coming off an emotional win over Indiana two nights ago. They aren't getting any younger, and while they aren't necessarily old, that game took its toll on them and I have a sneaking suspicion James might not play tonight to rest that ankle before the Christmas Day game against the Lakers.

The Kings have clearly been better since the Rudy Gay trade, and I've watched little Isaiah Thomas grow up right in front of my eyes as the new starting point guard.

I believe Sacto has enough offense to keep pace with Miami for four quarters, and the bench is good enough to help the starters get some rest without getting blown off the floor.

Take the Kings as your free play of the day.

My free play for tonight is on Portland minus the points against Bradley in Las Vegas, as part of the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. The Pilots opened up a 3.5-favorite and have since moved to a 4.5-chalk.

The Pilots, I think, got caught up in the mystique of coming to Las Vegas for this event and was upset the last time out, at home, by Montana State, 72-69. The loss snapped a three-game wining streak for the Pilots, who come into this event 6-4 overall.

And while I know Bradley comes into this game looking for revenge after a loss to the Pilots last year, make note Portland is slightly better and more experienced than the team that escaped with a 57-55 road win over last year. And, the Braves have lost three straight, five of six and arrive in Sin City with a 5-5 mark.

Portland has been a model of consistency on offense this year, while Bradley is struggling at times to find any kind of rhythm from the floor. While the Pilots are averaging an impressive 80.2 points per game, Bradley is scoring a mere 69.5 points per game.

Lay the low chalk with Portland.

Tonight I look for the Nets to continue their uptick against a 76ers team that they just drilled on Monday night.

Brooklyn comes into the City of Brotherly Love having won 4 of their last 6 games, including a 36 point romp over the sliding Sixers Monday night at the Barclays Center.

Philadelphia has dropped 7 in a row and 11 of their last 12, covering only twice in that stretch. The 76ers sure look like they are lottery-bound come the end of this season, and the fact they have also dropped 4 of the last 5 straight up, and 3 of the last 4 against the spread versus the Nets does not bode well for a cover this Friday night.

The Nets have Indiana in Indiana up next, so they had better make their hay tonight, because I don't see them notching the straight up on the 23rd at Bankers Life Field House.

Lay it with Brooklyn.

My free play for tonight is in the NBA, where I like the Minnesota Timberwolves minus the points against the Los Angeles Lakers, at Staples Center. And I'll be real honest with you here, I don't have a lot of analysis, it's more so about the mental state of the Lakers.

I think the back-and-forth drama with Kobe Bryant's injuries will weigh on the Lakers too much right now, and after getting used to playing without him, then having him back in the lineup, and now the news he's out...

All bad for the Lakers.

It's a hunch the Timberwolves will run away with this one.

The Duke's Sports

Nebraska Omaha +16

The little known Mavericks are not going away without a fight. They've done some good work on the road at 5-1 ATS and even covered at Iowa as a 29' point dog 83-75 earlier this season. They have scorers who comprise a team that can hang 80+ on you. C.J. Carter can play at any level and Marcus Tyus has stepped in off the bench as a great fill in for Simmons (injured). Minnesota has taken on a relatively light schedule padding their record for first year HC Pitino. Gophers just 1-3-1 vs Summit. We'll look for Neb-Omaha to hang around here.

PHILADELPHIA +5.5 over Brooklyn

These two played Monday and Brooklyn blew Philly out. In that contest, Joe Johnson and his Nets teammates had their best shooting night of the year particularly from deep as they hit a near record 21 three pointers. Tonight the 76ers will look for a little payback and the return of rookie Michael Carter-Williams will help. Brooklyn has been lousy on the road going 4-9 ATS. Philly gets payback!

NHL Predictions

New York Rangers -½ +110

The Islanders have just 9 wins on the season (26 losses) and they are a brutal 4-13 away from home. They enter this game losers of three straight and they've won just once in their last 14 games. Over their last 10 games they have scored just 15 goals (1.5 per game), while giving up 36 against (3.6 per game). The Rangers are 16-17-2 on the year and 6-9-2 at home. The Rangers took the first meeting between these two teams on the road by a score of 3-2. That improves the Rangers to 5-1 in their last 6 meetings vs the Islanders, and at home they have owned the Isles winning 8 of their last 9 at MSG. The Islanders have some poor numbers including 5-16 in their last 21 vs a team with a losing record, 7-24 in their last 31 vs Eastern Conference opponents and 0-5 in their last 5 games when playing on 2 days rest (while most teams are better on 2 days rest). The Rangers are 5-2 in their last 7 vs a team with a winning % below .400 and 22-9 in their last 31 home games vs a team with a winning % less than .400. I like the Rangers to bounce back from a shootout loss on Wednesday night with another victory against the Isles at home. I'll take New York in regulation time at a better price.

Anaheim Ducks -117

The Ducks will take their impressive record of 24-7-5 for a tangle with the Devils Friday night. New Jersey brings a modest record of 14-15-6 to the matchup, but are on a two game winning streak after knocking the Senators and Lightning off. The Devils needed those two wins to put together a stretch of 5-5 in their last ten games. So, with what said, it has been easy to predict what the Devils are going to do week-to-week. Most of the season has been marred by average play, which sums the team up nicely the past couple seasons, average. New Jersey is on a two game streak, but the Ducks have surpassed that with a six game roll. Their latest victory coming over the Detroit Red Wings three days ago. The Ducks have had some time to get adjusted to traveling from the west coast in this regard. A few of the wins included on this winning streak weren't courtesy of just beating lackluster teams, they started off with back-to-back victories over the Blackhawks and Blues on the road. The Ducks are one of the more balanced teams in the NHL, they don't do anything really exceptionally well, but as a result of them being so balanced they make it work. The Devils should not pose any real threat, and Anaheim should be able to extend their winning streak to seven games tonight.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Friday, December 20

OC Dooley

Rockets / Pacers Under 199

This is the third consecutive day that the NBA has received bountiful National-TV coverage and back on Wednesday in a heavy-hyped tilt Indiana nudged above the total in a game where the defense fell apart in the final two-minutes at Miami.  With all nationally televised games this week relatively high scoring, it comes as no personal shock that this particular total has risen from the opening offshore figure (197’) by nearly two full points.  While Indiana has played “above” the spot at a recent 7-2 clip, visiting Houston for most of the campaign has struggled on defense especially on the highway where they have played “above” the number at a 9-3 season clip.  In road games this season the Rockets have scored 108 points per try but have also let the opposition average a whopping 109 points per contest.  Back on Wednesday in front of the National-TV cameras Houston played another high scoring affair in a 109-94 home triumph where they made it above the number since a defensive-oriented opponent (Chicago) was involved.  The bottom line is that a main part of Indiana’s success out of the gate can be attributed to DEFENSE and tonight they may be getting a break as Houston star James Harden (ankle) made an appearance on the injury list and is NOT 100%.  For the entire season to date when cast as a favorite (3’ to 9’ points) which is the case in this evening’s ESPN telecast, Indiana has gone a resounding “8-1” UNDER the total

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Friday, December 20

River City Sharps

Nebraska Omaha +16

Nebraska Omaha has been good to us in a couple of spots this season and we are looking to back them again tonight. If you look at their schedule, they have been really competitver with some good teams this season on the road, most notably an 8-point loss at Iowa and a 3-point loss at UNLV. Now Richard Pitino has done a really nive job so far with Minnesota in his first season at the helm and they boast wins over Florida State and at Richmond. Omaha scores about 7 ppg more than Minnesota and are shooting 46.9% from the field this season. These teams are dead even in rebounding and Minnesota holds a very small advantage on the glass. We think Omaha will come to play tonight and the "home holiday bustle" may give Minny backers some cause for concern. The Gophers win this game, but it won't be easy.
