MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes

Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees

New York dropping the first game of this four-game set against Kansas City at Yankee Stadium count on southpaw C.C. Sabathia to even the series. Sabathia tossing seven innings of 2 run-ball in a victory over Twins last time out is 9-6 on the campaign with a 4.06 ERA. New York will be feeling pretty good about their chances, the Yankees are 7-2 at the Stadium with their port-side hurler and have won the last four meetings vs Royals handing the ball to Sabathia. On the other side, Royals counter with James Shields (3-6, 3.23 ERA). The right-hander is in a bit of a personal downturn heading into the contest with one win, six no-decisions last seven but on a positive note the Royals have won each of those seven starts. However, these baseball handicapping nuggets suggest Royals' streak w/Shields comes to a crashing halt. Shields has a history of struggles vs New York posting a career 7-15 mark with his teams (KC/TB) 9-18 over twenty-seven starts including a horrific 2-11 TSR chucking in the Big Apple, Sabathia has a 4-0 TSR following a super quality starts (=>7 inn, =<3 runs), a  5-1 TSR priced between -$1.30 and -$1.50 and Yankees sport a 3-1 record as a home favorite off a game-one series loss.

Houston at St Louis: Preview & Pick

The baseball handicapping community presumably took one look at the betting odds for tonight’s clash between the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros in the Gateway City, and promptly took off in the other direction.

That’s because according to the betting odds at Bovada the Cardinals are prohibitive -280 favorites, with the total listed at 7.5. Such betting odds too often have the illusion of being a sure thing, and promptly turn into a nightmare for those who choose that highly risky option when betting baseball.

The most recent example came just Saturday night, when these same Astros knocked off the Rangers in Arlington as +260 underdogs.

The reason for such high betting odds this evening is because the Cardinals will have their ace on the mound, Adam Wainwright, who brings an 11-5 mark and ERA of 2.36 on the year. His last outing was great for eight innings—until a Los Angeles Angels rally turned into a St. Louis loss. As painful as it was, such collapses are a gut-wrenching part of baseball handicapping.

Wainwright has plenty of experience starting a game as a home favorite of more than -200, with this contest marking the 19th time in his career. In those previous outings, Wainwright has Under bettors happy most of the time, with a 10-5-3 record below the betting line total.

The ‘Stros will offer righthander Bud Norris, who has a 6-7 record on the year and 3.22 ERA. Norris has put together three consecutive strong performances, yet has only a 1-0 record to go with his 1.35 ERA during the stretch.

Norris seems to be thriving under the lights this season, with all six of his victories coming at night, along with a strong ERA of 2.51. In his career, the Under is 6-1 when Norris starts as a road dog of more than +200.

This season, the Cardinals as a team have seen all three of the team’s home games as a home favorite of over -200 finish under the total, and in the past 10 occurrences in this category, the Under is a sparkling 7-2-1.

In addition, the Under has cashed 12 of 19 times in 2013 when the team has faced a righthander in a home night game, one of those games ending in a push.

For the Astros, the team’s last four games with the combination of being a road dog of over +200 and a total Under 8, have all finished Under. Also, since June 1, Houston has seen 9 of 13 games finish Under when on the road against a righthander.

Play St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros Under 7.5
