Sunday Night Baseball: Giants at Braves
By Steve Merril
Covers.com

It's West vs. East on Sunday Night Baseball as the Giants take on the Braves in Atlanta.

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-147, 8)

TIP TOP TIM NO MORE

Tim Lincecum is far from his ace days as he takes the mound on Sunday night. The righty is just 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA. He has given up 15 runs in his last three road starts against the Pirates, Rockies, and Diamondbacks. The Giants’ pitcher faced the Braves at home back on May 12 and gave up just two hits and three walks in seven innings while picking up a 5-1 win. Lincecum has been inconsistent this season; he has six starts in which he has allowed two earned runs or less. Those good outings have been mixed in with seven other starts where he has allowed four runs or more.

JULIO IS JARRING HITTERS

Julio Teheran is 4-3 with a 3.62 ERA on the year for the Braves. He has struck out 58 batters while walking just 15 hitters in 77 innings of work. The last time he was home, the righty nearly no-hit the Pirates. His next start was a rough one in San Diego as he gave up five runs in just six innings of work. He beat the Giants in San Francisco back on May 9. In that game, Teheran gave up three runs and seven hits striking out three while walking none. In his last 10 starts, Teheran has allowed six hits or more seven times.

INJURY REPORT

The Giants are a relatively healthy team. They have Angel Pagan and Pablo Sandoval on the disabled list. The Panda is expected to be activated around June 24th. They are also without Ryan Vogelsong who is dealing with a fractured right hand. Atlanta’s injury list is also short and about to become shorter with the return of Brandon Beachy on June 18. He had Tommy John surgery last year. The bullpen is without Jonny Venters and Eric O’Flaherty who both underwent Tommy John this season.

TRENDS

The under is 4-1-1 in the Giants’ last six Sunday games.
Giants are 4-1 in Lincecum’s last five Sunday starts

Braves are 12-4 in their last 16 Sunday games
The under is 5-1 in Teheran’s last six starts.

HITTERS TO WATCH

Brian McCann 10-for-30 vs. Lincecum
Justin Upton 11-for-47 vs. Lincecum

Buster Posey 2-for-3 vs. Teheran
Brandon Belt 2-for-3 vs. Teheran

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels

The brooms are likely out as the Los Angeles Angels host the New York Yankees in the conclusion of a three-game series. Anaheim is seeking its fourth straight victory, while the Yankees are closing out a nine-game road trip by trying to avoid the team’s sixth straight loss.

With Anaheim ace Jered Weaver on the mound, the line has the Angels as -150 favorites, according to the current betting odds at at Bovada, with a run total of 7.5.

Weaver has just a 1-2 mark on the season with a 3.77 ERA, having missed nearly two months after a wrist injury in early April. He is coming off a poor outing in Baltimore, but his past two starts in front of the home crowd has seen him win once with an ERA of 1.50 over 12 innings.

The Yankees put up a still-formidable arm in southpaw CC Sabathia, who has a 6-5 record with a 4.07 ERA. However, Sabathia has given up 10 runs in his last 15 innings, including six in his six innings of work last Tuesday night in Oakland.

Home field advantage is something Weaver has done wonders with throughout his career, with the Angels winning 36 of his 47 home starts when the team is favored by -150 or less. During the day, it’s been eight victories in nine tries.

The righthander has been equally dominant when pitching at home after an Angels win. Overall, Anaheim is 40-10, but as a favorite of -150 or lower, the record is 19-3. Finally, if it’s during the day it is 7-1.

Perhaps the most astounding number is that when Weaver is a home favorite of -150 or less, and the run total is under 8 as it is today, the Angels have a 15-1 record in those games—not to mention the 4-0 mark in the daylight hours.

In contrast, daytime road games have not really agreed with Sabathia over the past few years, with the Yankees losing six of his last 10 starts under those parameters.

Recently, the Angels have garnered some success against portsiders with four wins in the last six contests. Those same numbers work against New York when looking at how they recently have closed out a road trip after dropping the opening game of that last series: four losses in six tries.

To sum it up, while the price is high--considering Weaver’s counterpart is Sabathia, the broad array of numbers in Weaver’s favor this afternoon make the only bet

Play Anaheim -150

MLB Odds and Picks -- Betting the OVER for Sunday Night Baseball matchup
By: The Linemakers

LAS VEGAS -- Tim Lincecum's best outing of the season came on May 12 at home against the Braves when he tossed seven shutout innings in an eventual 5-1 Giants win.

However, in his next five starts, Lincecum has only come close to matching that performance once -- a 2-1 win against Toronto on June 4. He's gone 1-4 in those five starts with a 5.79 ERA. That gives the Giants all the ammunition they need should they choose to send him to the bullpen, where he fared well in the playoffs last season.

Coming into the season following a disastrous spring, we thought Lincecum would be ripe to bet against, and while he pitched poor enough to lose, the Giants kept winning behind him. We eventually gave up that strategy. The Giants bailed him out after he got rocked at Chicago on April 14 -- one start after bailing him out against the Rockies. We lost that bet. Lincecum offered up 10 earned runs between those two starts, but in each case the Giants came back to win.

In his first eight starts of the season, culminating with his gem against the Braves, the Giants went 6-2 behind Lincecum. But now, as the Giants' bats have cooled, the losses are piling up without the run support to bail him out.

Tonight at Atlanta, it doesn't look to get any easier for Lincecum (4-6, 4.70 ERA). He'll face the toughest home team in the majors. Last night's come-from-behind win improved the Braves' record to 22-8 at Turner Field, and they are 14-3 at home since May 5. Lincecum had trouble in Atlanta even when he was in top form, losing his last three starts there, the last coming on Aug. 18, 2011 where he lost 1-0.

The Braves are a -160 favorite tonight behind Julio Teheran, and although the Braves have such a stellar record at home, use plenty of caution before just diving in to bet against Lincecum.

The Braves won their first six games of the season behind Teheran, but have gone 2-4 behind him in his last six starts, with his latest being the worst. Coming off of an eight inning, one-hit, 11 strikeout performance in a 5-0 win against the Pirates, Teheran got rocked in San Diego on Monday, allowing five runs, and serving up two homers in a 7-5 loss. And that's at Petco Park, where good pitchers are supposed to thrive and the long balls rarely make it over the fence. It was only the third time this season Teheran had allowed two homers in a game.

Teheran (4-3, 3.62 ERA) did face the Giants when they met in San Francisco on May 9. It was the only win the Braves would get in that four-game series. He picked up his second win of the season with seven innings of three-run ball. It was the Braves' sixth straight win behind him.

We don't have a lean to any side in this game, but we do think we should see some runs off of both pitchers. The total is posted at 7.5 runs OVER -120.

Sunday selections:

Braves/Giants OVER 7.5 (-120)

Mariners (Iwakuma) +117 at A's

Mariners/A's UNDER 7 (-105)

Angels (Weaver) -140 vs. Yankees

Season to date record: 130-126-1 (+681)
