Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies defeating Brewers Sunday snapping a three game slide look to inch closer to the .500 mark when they meet Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park Monday night. Phillies sitting at 27-30 overall, 13-15 at home opened $-1.65 favorites to knock off the 16-41 Marlins sporting the Major Leagues worst road record at 6-21. Philadelphia will be sending Kyle Kendrick (5-3, 3.27 ERA) to the mound. The veteran pitcher presents a solid case for backing Phillies. The right-hander handcuffing Marlins over 7 innings of 2 run ball earlier this season improved his mark to an impressive 11-2 career vs Miami/Florida with Phillies 11-4 over the fifteen starts. Philadelphia will face Tom Koehler (0-3, 3.22 ERA) who has yet to pick up a win in four starts. The right-hander has never faced Philadelphia as a starter but did throw two innings of relief work back on May 2 tagged with 3 runs. Miami hitting the road does not bode well for Marlins as they're 3-9 on the road vs the division, 2-7 on the road opening a series.

LAS VEGAS -- We’ve got an interesting situation in Seattle tonight, as a bettor has to weigh a team’s great history against a particular opponent on the road versus its own miserable current road losing streak. The White Sox have lost seven straight road games coming into tonight’s game against the Mariners, but Chicago has dominated at Safeco Field over the years.

The White Sox have won 26 of their last 31 games against the Mariners, including eight straight in Seattle. Their pitching has been dominating over that eight-game stretch with a 1.73 ERA.

Tonight’s starter, John Danks (0-1, 5.40 ERA), has also been dominant against the Mariners, going 7-0 with a 1.31 ERA in eight starts, including 4-0 at Safeco Field.

These historical numbers may get a bettor excited about the White Sox as an underdog (EVEN) tonight, but the past gets harder to swallow when looking at the Sox in their present state, which has seen them lose six straight. After getting swept by the Cubs in the Windy City battle, their bats went even colder in Oakland over the weekend in another three-game sweep, when they scored only three runs.

In Danks’ last start, he lasted only four innings at Wrigley Field, giving up four runs (three earned) and serving up two homers.

Should the bettor emphasize his current form or his stellar past against this opponent? We suggest the current form is more important here.

The Mariners haven’t been doing anything special lately. After ending an eight-game losing streak on May 26, they have gone 4-4. But in addition to the White Sox’s current funk, there is another factor in Seattle’s advantage, and believe it or not, it’s left-hander Joe Saunders (3-5, 5.57 ERA). On the road, Saunders has been awful, posting a record of 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts.

At home, though, he’s been terrific.

Saunders has loved pitching at Seattle over his career, whoever he’s pitched for, posting a 9-1 record with a 2.23 ERA in 14 starts at Safeco. This season, his first with the Mariners, he’s 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA in five starts at the ballpark.

Although Saunders has lost his past two starts against the White Sox, we like this situation for him and the Mariners tonight.

Monday’s selections:

Mariners (Saunders) -110 vs. White Sox

Indians (Masterson) +105 at Yankees

Pirates (Burnett) +115 at Braves

Season to date record: 110-99-1 (+1,328)
