NCAAB Game Of The Day: Notre Dame at Cincinnati

Notre Dame at Cincinnati (-4, 134.5)

Through no fault of its own, No. 19 Notre Dame and its 11-game winning streak figure to take a back seat on Monday when the Fighting Irish travel to No. 15 Cincinnati. The Notre Dame football team, which will meet Alabama on the gridiron in the BCS title game two hours, may remove some of the luster off the basketball team that is one win shy of matching its longest winning streak under coach Mike Brey. The Irish – like their football brethren hopes to do – returned from a long layoff and did not miss a beat in Saturday’s 93-74 victory over Seton Hall. The Bearcats, who haven’t dropped three straight at home since a five-game slide in 2007, are looking to rebound from two one-point setbacks at Fifth Third Arena over their last three games after Saturday’s 53-52 loss to St. John’s.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (13-1, 1-0 Big East): The Irish are averaging 79.5 points and shooting 53.5 percent from the field during their 11-game winning streak. Even as Jack Cooley was posting his 10th double-double and Eric Atkins his fifth against the Pirates, Notre Dame may have been the most pleased with the contributions of sixth-year senior Scott Martin, who drained a career-high six 3-pointers en route to a season-high 22 points Saturday. The Irish will be playing their first true road game of the season; eight of the team’s nine Big East regular-season losses over the past two campaigns have come on the road.

ABOUT CINCINNATI (13-2, 1-1): The Bearcats entered Saturday as the second-best rebounding team in the country, but lost the battle of the boards for just the third time this season. Cincinnati, which owns the nation’s ninth-best field goal percentage defense (35.7), will present a formidable challenge to the efficient Irish offense that ranks third in the country in shooting percentage (51.5). Sean Kilpatrick – the team’s leading scorer – has been limited to 22 points in the Bearcats’ losses against New Mexico and St. John’s, shooting just 22.2 percent in those games. In the team’s 13 wins, he is averaging 18.9 points and shooting 46.7 percent.

* Fighting Irish are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Bearcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a loss.
* Over is 4-0 in Notre Dame’s last four overall.
* Under is 6-1 in Bearcats’ last seven overall.

1. Notre Dame’s most recent 12-game winning streak occurred during the 2006-07 season.

2. Cincinnati has won nine of its last 12 games against ranked opponents.

3. Cashmere Wright needs one assist to move Bearcat legend Oscar Robertson (425) for sole possession of fourth place in school history.

Games to Watch
By David Schwab

No. 21 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. No. 14 Cincinnati Bearcats

While Notre Dame’s football team is in Miami trying to win a national title, its men’s basketball team will be on the road in Ohio trying to win its 14th game of the season against just one loss. The Fighting Irish are 13-1 straight-up overall and 7-4 against the spread. The total has gone OVER in six of eight games. Jack Cooley leads the team with 15.5 points and 11.4 rebounds a game.

The Bearcats should tumble in the new rankings after a 53-52 loss to St. Johns this past Saturday as 13 ½-point home favorites. They have now lost two of their last three games to fall to 13-2 SU and 6-5 ATS on the year. The total has stayed UNDER in six of eight games. Cincinnati is suddenly struggling to put the ball in the hoop after averaging 79.7 points in its first 12 games. Sean Kilpatrick remains the team’s biggest scoring threat with 17.9 points a game while also leading in rebounds with 5.8.

Monday’s College Basketball Betting Guide
By: Larry Hartstein

Notre Dame’s basketball team gets the first crack at an upset Monday before its football team plays Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game. Headlining a light NCAA hoops schedule, the red-hot Irish hoopsters visit Cincinnati in the only matchup of top 25 teams. Notre Dame had covered four straight in the series until the Bearcats won, 71-55, at home last season as 8.5-point favorites.

No. 21 Notre Dame (13-1 SU, 7-4 ATS) at No. 14 Cincinnati (13-2 SU, 6-5 ATS), 6:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Cincinnati -4, Total: 134.5

Based on recent performances, Notre Dame seems the easy pick here. The Irish are shooting 53.5 percent and averaging 79.5 points during their 11-game win streak, while the Bearcats have not produced a 30-point first half in their last six games. They’re also 1-5 ATS at home, having lost outright the last two times they’ve played at Fifth Third Arena. But Cincy has not lost three straight home games since 2007, and coach Mick Cronin is breathing fire and blasting his frontcourt.

“When you throw it to the one-foot marker and you can’t throw it up and get it in the basket, I don’t know what else you can do,” he said after Saturday’s 53-52 home loss to St. John’s, in which Cincy was outscored, 34-18, in the paint and outrebounded, 40-34. “When you get the ball to the one-foot mark, you’ve got to get fouled or get a basket or you’ve got to play somebody else that can get fouled or get a basket. It’s a problem.”

Look for Bearcats big men Justin Jackson and Cheikh Mbodj to play better, and expect a major bounceback from leading scorer Sean Kilpatrick (17.9). He was held to seven points on 3-of-14 shooting Saturday.

Notre Dame is 5-1 ATS in its last six games.

Notre Dame is 33-16 ATS in its last 49 Big East games.

Cincinnati is 7-2 ATS in its last nine Big East games.

Cincinnati is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games following an ATS loss.

Under is 6-1 in Cincinnati’s last seven games.

Under is 20-8 in Cincinnati’s last 28 home games.

Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

No. 5 Indiana (13-1 SU, 8-4 ATS) at Penn State (8-5 SU, 5-4 ATS), 7 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

Indiana -17, Total: 138

The Nittany Lions are heavily outgunned here, but they’ve covered three straight and they do a good job defending 3-pointers (35 percent), a must against the Hoosiers. Especially with Indiana’s Jordan Hulls (51.4 percent on treys) coming off an 0-for-10 performance at Iowa that included 0-for-4 from deep. He won’t do that again.

The Hoosiers should dominate Penn State’s weak frontcourt with Cody Zeller (16.6 ppg, 8.1 rpg) and Christian Watford (12.5, 6.4). And their backups are finally healthy and contributing. Indiana sports a 12.7 rebounding margin, Penn State 5.9.

Indiana is 1-4 ATS in its last five road games.

Penn State is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games vs. teams with .600-plus winning percentages.

Penn State is 4-1 ATS in its last five games.

Under is 7-3 in Indiana’s last 10 road games.

Over is 5-2 in Penn State’s last seven road games.

Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Southern Utah (5-7 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Sacramento State (6-5 SU, 1-5-1 ATS), 10:05 p.m. ET

Sacramento State -8.5

Southern Utah is enjoying its debut season in the Big Sky, going 3-0 in conference play. Both teams have had recent games against Northern Arizona, the team picked last in the Big Sky preseason media poll. On Saturday, Southern Utah G Damon Heuir poured in 30 points in a 90-77 win at Northern Arizona, in which he hit 4-of-6 3-pointers and 14-of-16 free throws. Last Thursday, Sacramento State shot 34 percent in a 57-50 loss at Northern Arizona. Sacramento State’s Hornets were picked eighth in the preseason poll, Southern Utah 10th. The Thunderbirds, on a 3-1 SU and ATS run, look like a live dog here.

Southern Utah is 2-5 ATS in its last seven road games.

Sacramento State is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six home games.

Sacramento State is 1-5-1 ATS in its last seven Big Sky games.

Under is 16-5 in Southern Utah’s last 21 games.

Under is 7-3 in Southern Utah’s last 10 road games.

Over is 5-2 in Sacramento State’s last seven Big Sky games.
