NBA Betting News and Notes Wednesday 11/7

Wednesday Tips
By Kevin Rogers

The Wednesday NBA card is loaded with 13 games to wager on, including a handful of contests with plenty of interest. We'll take a look at four games, as the Bucks and Spurs look to stay unbeaten, while the Lakers and Jazz try to get on track. The night begins in South Florida with the Heat attempting to close out their homestand at a perfect 3-0.

Nets at Heat

For the exception of a hiccup at New York, Miami's offense has dominated in its three victories, averaging 121 points per game. The Heat hits the road for six games following Wednesday's contest against Brooklyn, who squandered a 22-point lead in Monday's home loss to Minnesota as 7½-point favorites.

Miami ran Phoenix out on Monday, 124-99 as 13-point 'chalk,' while hitting the 'over' for the third time in three games at the American Airlines Arena. The Heat drilled 15 three-pointers, as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh combined to score 63 points. The addition of Ray Allen off the bench has paid huge dividends early, as the former Celtic is averaging 15 points per game, while tallying 38 points in the wins over the Nuggets and Suns.

The Nets have played just two games so far with their opener against the Knicks postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Brooklyn picked up a victory in its first game against Toronto, 107-100 to cash as 5½-point favorites, but stumbled in its quest for a second win on Monday. The Nets led the Wolves by 15 at the half and even 22 in the third quarter, but that lead evaporated quickly as Brooklyn would score just 10 points in the final quarter to lose, 107-96.

Grizzlies at Bucks

Milwaukee stunned Boston in its opener as seven-point road favorites, while needing a Brandon Jennings' buzzer-beating three-pointer to escape Cleveland to improve to 2-0. Although the Bucks didn't cover against the Cavs as seven-point 'chalk,' Scott Skiles' club looks for a 3-0 start when the Grizzlies invade the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Wednesday.

Memphis also attempts to win its third consecutive contest following victories over Golden State and Utah by nine points or more. The Grizzlies overcame an earlier 12-point deficit to beat the Jazz on Monday as five-point favorites, 103-94, as Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph combined to score 38 points. Memphis has taken each of the last three meetings against Milwaukee, including a 99-95 triumph in Wisconsin this past March as 2½-point 'dogs.

The Bucks nearly had a letdown on Saturday against the Cavs, but held off Cleveland, 105-102. Mike Dunleavy came off the bench to score 29 points for the Bucks, while Milwaukee shot 52% from the field. Last season, the Bucks put together a 9-10 SU and 7-12 ATS record at home off a victory, but Milwaukee compiled a strong 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS mark at the Bradley Center off a home win.

Lakers at Jazz

Both Los Angeles and Utah have started 1-3 out of the gate, as the two teams meet up in Salt Lake City on Wednesday. The Jazz returns home following a disappointing 0-3 road swing with losses at New Orleans, San Antonio, and Memphis, while failing to cover in all three defeats. The Lakers go for their second straight victory after breaking through the win column on Sunday night against the Pistons, 108-79 as 7½-point favorites.

Los Angeles is still without point guard Steve Nash (fibula), but jumped on Detroit in the first quarter to take a 34-13 advantage after 12 minutes. Dwight Howard led the Lakers with 28 points, while L.A. limited the Pistons to just 35% shooting from the floor. The Lakers lost their lone game away from Staples Center, falling at Portland, 116-106, as Los Angeles lost nine of 25 in the road underdog role last season.

Utah's best performance came in its only home contest, dominating an unrested Dallas squad, 113-94 on Halloween night as 8½-point favorites. Since then, the Jazz has reached the 100-point mark only once in three games, while wrapping up their road trip with a 103-94 defeat at Memphis. The Lakers and Jazz split four meetings last season with each team winning once at home and once on the road.

Spurs at Clippers

San Antonio swept Los Angeles in the second round of last season's Western Conference playoffs, as the Spurs try to reach 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. The Spurs cruised past the Jazz and Pacers by double-digits to finish off their homestand at 3-0, while the defense has allowed 95 points or less three times through four games.

The Clippers started the season at 2-0 after beating the Grizzlies and Lakers, but were knocked off as heavy favorites in losses to the Warriors and Cavaliers. Vinny Del Negro's club has broken the 100-point mark in all four games, while the defense has given up at least 108 points in each of their two defeats. The Cavs knocked down 14 three-pointers, as Cleveland outscored Los Angeles in three of the four quarters.

The Spurs grabbed six of seven meetings from the Clippers last season, including a perfect 3-0 mark at Staples Center.

Game of the day: Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat

Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat (-9, 200)

The Miami Heat have been dominant at home in the early part of the season and history suggests that won't change when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night. The defending NBA champions are leading the league in scoring and are averaging a staggering 121.0 points per game in their three home wins, including a 124-99 blowout of the Phoenix Suns on Monday. The Heat have owned the Nets in recent seasons, winning 10 consecutive meetings overall and the past six matchups in South Beach.

Brooklyn was well on its way to a 2-0 start to the season, building a 22-point third-quarter lead before the wheels came off in a stunning 107-96 loss to the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. The Nets had hit 13 of their first 19 3-point attempts to seize control of the game and still entered the fourth quarter leading by 11, but they scored only 10 points in the final 12 minutes and watched the shorthanded Timberwolves end the game on an 11-0 run to snatch away the victory.

ABOUT THE NETS (1-1, 1-1 ATS): Brooklyn did not score 60 points in the first half the entire 2011-12 season but have done it twice in as many games. Now the Nets have to figure out a way not to unravel in the second half after they were outscored 32-10 in the final quarter. "Losses like this have to really sting more than they ever have in the past," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "Losses like this can come back to bite you later on in the year." Brooklyn compounded its woes by getting waxed on the backboards 46-30 by a team missing top rebounder Kevin Love.

ABOUT THE HEAT (3-1, 2-2 ATS): LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are averaging between 23.0 and 20.0 points, respectively, and new acquisition Ray Allen has complemented Miami's Big 3 by averaging 15.5 points. But when it comes to doling out credit for the team's offensive efficiency, point guard Mario Chalmers received plaudits from his teammates after his second 11-assist game of the season. "The way he plays, it opens the floor for everybody out there and makes us unpredictable on offense," Allen said. "Defensively, they can’t scout that.”

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Nets are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings in Miami.
* Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Road team is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings.
* Nets are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings.

1. James averaged 30.0 points on 66.0 percent shooting (31 of 47) in three meetings with the Nets last season.

2. Allen became the fourth active player to eclipse the 23,000-point mark in Monday's game

3. Nets F Gerald Wallace (ankle) is listed as questionable, but he was in a walking boot on the bench Monday night.

NBA: Streaks, Tips, Notes

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers get a shot at avenging last years 0-4 Conference Semifinals humiliation suffered at the hands of San Antonio. However, avenging the loss with a win won’t be easy. San Antonio doesn’t waste time finding its form in the early stages of the schedule. Spurs off to a smart 4-0 (2-1-1 ATS) start are ridding a commanding 33-11 (25-17-2 ATS) stretch during the month of November. If that were not enough to lay the small number with San Antonio consider Spurs have won 18-of-20 meetings between the teams outscoring Clippers by 12.4 PPG. The kicker, Spurs have posted a smart 12-1 mark the past thirteen on Clippers home court winning by 11.2 points/game. Look for Spurs to remain undefeated while Clippers drop their third consecutive game both in the record books and at the betting window.

NBA Odds, Picks and Trends: Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012
By: The Linemakers

The Miami Heat are huge 10.5-point home favorites Wednesday night against the Brooklyn Nets, with a massive total of 207, but based on their first three home games, both numbers appear a little light. The Heat have averaged 121 points and allowed 107 points per home game, all three easily flying over the total.

The Nets figure to help this game get OVER the total tonight, considering both their games this season have gone OVER. Last season, the Nets didn’t score 60 points during the first half of any game. This season, they’ve topped that mark in both games.

The Heats’ Big Three – LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh – are all averaging 20-plus points this season. Newcomer Ray Allen has chipped in with 15.5 points a game to give the Heat the consistent outside shooter they have needed since this dream team came together.

James has had his way with the Nets defense, averaging 30 points per game on 66 percent shooting (31-of-47) over his last three games against them. Overall, the Heat have won 10 straight against the Nets, including six straight in Miami.

The Nets come with a solid offensive attack led by Brook Lopez, Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, a trio that has combined to average 55 points a game.

The Heat have beaten the Nets six straight games, covering four, and four of the games have gone OVER the total.

Check out all of Wednesday night's NBA action.

The Lakers have covered only 13 of their past 39 road games.

The Pistons have won their past four meetings against the Kings, covering three, and three of the games stayed UNDER the total. Detroit is a 6-point dog in Sacramento tonight.

The Kings have covered only two of their past 15 games in November.

The Warriors and have won and covered their past three games against the Cavs. Golden State is a 4.5-point favorite at home vs. Cleveland this evening.

The Spurs have covered 14 of their past 20 games against Pacific Division opponents. San Antonio is a 1.5-point favorite at the L.A. Clippers.

The Spurs have covered 27 of the past 37 games after winning three of more consecutive games. They are 4-0 this season.

NBA Injuries:

Kobe Bryant skipped a second consecutive practice on Tuesday due to a strained right foot, but isn’t expected to miss tonight’s game at Utah. Bryant said he’ll be 90 percent for the Jazz game. Coach Mike Brown did say he might try to limit Bryant’s minutes — Kobe’s averaged 37 minutes in the first four games. Bryant has averaged 26.8 points per game despite the nagging injury.

Magic guard Jameer Nelson missed his second consecutive game last night and is doubtful for tonight’s game at Minnesota.

Magic forward Hedu Turkoglu’s broken hand is expected to keep out of action another four weeks.

Clippers forward Blake Griffin has been playing with a bruised bursa sac in his right elbow but will continue play. Griffin also has a neck strain.

Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson could miss 2-4 weeks after tests on his left foot confirmed a mid-foot sprain.

Nets forward Gerald Wallace (ankle) was in a walking boot on the bench Monday and is out for tonight’s game.

Pacers forward Danny Granger will be out approximately three months after having an injection to treat patellar tendonitis in his left knee.

Cavs center Tyler Zeller (concussion) is out for tonight's game at Golden State.

Hawks forward Josh Smith (ankle) is probable for tonight's game against the Pacers.

Nuggets forward Wilson Chandler (hip) played 15 minutes last night in his first game back, but will sit out tonight at Houston as the Nuggets work him back into the rotation slowly.

NBA notes:

Andre Iguodala gave a pre-game pep talk to the home crowd in his first home game as a Denver Nugget and produced a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Nuggets 109-97 win over the Pistons. The win was the first on the season and helped the Nuggets avoid their first 0-4 start since the 1998-99 season. The home cooking was short lived, as the team was back on a plane traveling to Houston for tonight’s game.
