Pacers at Spurs: What Bettors Need to Know

Indiana Pacers at San Antonio Spurs (-8, 196)

The San Antonio Spurs have never started an NBA season with four consecutive victories. The Spurs look for that first 4-0 start on Monday when they host the Indiana Pacers, a team they have beaten nine straight times. Indiana has dropped 10 straight games in San Antonio, dating back to the 2001-02 season when the Spurs still called the Alamodome home. Pacers forward Danny Granger is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

Indiana recorded a 106-98 double-overtime win over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. David West (18 points, 18 rebounds), Paul George (16 points, career-high 17 rebounds) and Roy Hibbert (12 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks) all had double-doubles as the Pacers attempt to make up for Granger’s absence. San Antonio is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the Western Conference. The Spurs venture on a four-game West Coast road trip after playing Indiana.

LINE: The Spurs have been bet down from -8 to -7.5 at some books. The total has dropped to 196 from as high as 197.

ABOUT THE PACERS (2-1, 2-1 ATS): Guard George Hill is playing through a hip pointer and had his best game of the season against Sacramento when he had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists in nearly 45 minutes. Hill figures to be pumped up to go up against former teammate Tony Parker in his second visit to San Antonio since the club shipped him to Indiana in the 2011 draft-day trade that allowed the Spurs to land Kawhi Leonard.

ABOUT THE SPURS (3-0, 1-1-1 ATS): Veteran guard Manu Ginobili (back) played for the first time this season in Saturday’s victory over the Utah Jazz and tallied eight points in 15-plus minutes off the bench. There is no need to rush Ginobili back into the starting lineup with Danny Green playing so well. Green scored 21 points against the Jazz, hitting 8-of-9 field-goal attempts and connecting on all three 3-pointers. Green is averaging 14.3 points and shooting 58.6 percent.

* Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Over is 14-5 in the last 19 meetings.
* Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in San Antonio.
* Pacers are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings in San Antonio.

1. San Antonio won the lone meeting last season with Tim Duncan contributing 23 points and 11 rebounds in a 112-103 victory.

2. Indiana has held each of its first three opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the field.

3. Spurs forward Tim Duncan has two double-doubles and is averaging 21.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.

The San Antonio Spurs started the season out a little sluggish last week in New Orleans, but they still pulled out the win and also have two impressive wins since then, making them the only 3-0 team in the NBA‘s young season.

Tonight, they’ll try for their first 4-0 start in team history as they face the Indiana Pacers, a team they have beaten nine straight times. The Pacers have not won in San Antonio since the 2001-02 season.

Tonight doesn’t seem like the likely end of the streak, either. While the Pacers are still without their best player — Danny Granger — Tim Duncan, through the first three games, has been a blast from the past. Duncan has averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots through three games, looking like the young player fresh out of Wake Forest.

The Spurs are also getting Manu Ginobili back into the mix. He played 15 minutes and scored eight points in his first game back Saturday, but they’ll likely ease him into the rotation, which won’t concern Gregg Popovich too much because of the play of Danny Green, who has averaged 14 points per game.

Then, of course, there's Tony Parker, who has been at his regular dynamic self, along with second-year forward Kawhi Leonard, who is coming into his own.

The main constant thus far for the Pacers has been great defense. They have held each of their three opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the field, the bulk of the reason they are 2-1.

The Spurs are 8.5-point favorites tonight, and the total is 196. San Antonio has covered 29 of its past 39 home games.

NBA trends:

— The Knicks and Sixers have gone UNDER the total in nine of their past 11 meetings, including Sunday. Tonight’s total is 184.5.

— The Heat have covered only two of their past 16 November games. Miami is a 13.5-point favorite at home against Phoenix.

— The Heat have won three straight over the Suns, covering twice.

— The Blazers have covered only once in their past 12 games coming off a win of 10-points or more. Portland is a 4-point dog in Dallas.

— The Kings have covered only twice in the past 15 November games. Sacramento is a 2-point favorite at home vs. Golden State.

—The Cavs have covered their past three games against the Clippers. Cleveland is a 10.5-point dog in L.A. tonight.

—There no significant injuries tonight.
