Dirt Mile 1 mile; $1 million; 3up; Saturday, 2:30pm on ABC

The History

Corinthian won the first running of the Dirt Mile, oddly enough contested at 1mile and 70 yards last year in the slop at Monmouth.

The Best
Albertus Maximus won his debut for his new trainer in a minor stakes at Del Mar in his lone start at the distance before finishing third in the G1 Goodwood last out. He’s hit the board in all four of his Santa Anita starts.

Though he’s made 33 lifetime starts, this will be the first Jonesboro’s first on a synthetic track. He’s won three of five starts at a mile but his lone turf try was abysmal and is usually a good barometer as to whether a horse will like this type of surface or not.

Off his Goodwood win, Well Armed will be the favorite in the Dirt Mile despite the fact that he was off the board in his lone try at the distance. Still, his synthetic track record, five wins and two seconds from eight starts speaks for itself and may be enough to get the job done against these.

The Rest
Lewis Michael has hit the board in all four starts at the distance and in six of seven of his synthetic tries. My Pal Charlie posted a mild upset in the G2 Super Derby in his most recent. Pyro ran the worst race of his life over a synthetic track in the G1 Blue Grass at Keeneland. Rebellion is another who loves synthetic surfaces. Slew’s Tiznow won a minor Del Mar stakes off of an eleven month layoff in his last start. Slew’s Tizzy wired money allowance horses at this distance/over this course last out off of a seven month layoff. Surf Cat has done the bulk of his best work on conventional dirt. Two Step Salsa won the G3 Affirmed three back.

The Scenario
Two Step Salsa will be on the lead. Jonesboro, My Pal Charlie, Slew’s Tiznow, Slew’s Tizzy, Surf Cat and Well Armed will vie for position behind him. Albertus Maximus and Lewis Michael should be in mid-pack. Pyro and Rebellion will be coming late.

The Strategy
Well Armed is likely to go off the favorite and has raced just once at the distance. Looks like a vulnerable favorite to me so I’d spread.

The Bomb
Rebellion hasn’t had much success around two turns but loves synthetic tracks and should like the distance.
