Breeders Cup Juvenile
By Anthony Stabile

The Juvenile: 1 1/16th miles; $2 million; 2YO; Saturday, 3:55pm ESPN

The History
Arazi sparkled in 1991 with an amazing turn of foot on the far turn; the great Unbridled’s Song defeated Hennessy in the slop at Belmont in 1995; Favorite Trick capped off a perfect 8 for 8, Horse of the Year season and just last year Street Sense was victorious before breaking the 22-year-old Juvenile Derby Jinx with a stunning ten length romp.

The Best
Normally a race dominated by East Coast entrants, some would consider Munnings to be the only colt that fits the bill this year. After breaking his maiden in ultra impressive fashion, despite hitting the gate at the start, in his Saratoga debut, Munnings found even more trouble at the beginning of the G1 Hopeful, where he eventually finished third. Last out, Munnings battled most of the way before settling for second in the G1 Champagne behind Hopeful winner Vineyard Haven.

Square Eddie made his stateside debut a winning one when he captured the G1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland last out when adding Lasix for the first time in his first start around two turns. In Europe, Square Eddie won one of three starts on the turf and was second in his lone Polytrack attempt.

Street Hero used the G1 Norfolk as the stage for his maiden victory in his first start with blinkers last out. Prior to his Norfolk win, he was third in the Del Mar Futurity and has hit the board in all five of his starts.

The Rest
Azul Leon won his first three sprinting, but never fired in the Norfolk when stretching out. Believe in Hope finished third in the Norfolk despite a slow start. Bushranger ships in from Europe of a pair of G1 wins on the turf. Coronet of a Baron has finished second in his last pair both graded stakes. Elusive Bluff switches to synthetic after winning his first two starts on the lawn. Forty Thieves showed plenty of speed when winning the first two of his career, but needs to draw in. Gallant Son has won his last four starts, including three minor stakes at Emerald Downs, but needs to draw in. Midshipman won the G1 Del Mar Futurity before finishing second in the Norfolk last out. Mine That Bird ships in from Woodbine looking for his fifth straight win. Pioneerof the Nile broke his maiden on the grass before finishing third in the Breeders’ Futurity. Silent Valor wired the G3 Sapling two back before failing to fire in the Norfolk. Terrain was second in the Breeders’ Futurity after a double disqualification victory in the G3 Arlington Washington Futurity. West Side Bernie won the G3 Kentucky Cup Juvenile after breaking his maiden around two turns at Monmouth.

The Scenario
Forty Thieves should lead the way if he draws into the field. Bushranger, Coronet of a Baron, Munnings and Silent Valor should be up close. Elusive Bluff, Gallant Son, Midshipman, Mine That Bird, Square Eddie, Street Hero and West Side Bernie will be mid-pack. Azul Leon, Believe in Hope, Pioneerof the Nile and Terrain will be the closers.

The Strategy
Another race in which spreading is suggested especially in multi-race exotics, but if you like someone to win, you should be getting a square price.

The Bomb
Pioneerof the Nile made a bold and wide middle move to get third in the Breeders’ Futurity in his synthetic track debut last out. If the speed collapses, he should be right there at around 30-1.
