BOSTON RED SOX vs. TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS
The Red Sox are no great surprise playingthis time of the year but its opponent, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays came into 2008 with nothing but a decade of losing to their credit never winning more than 70 games in a season and compiled the worst cumulative record in baseball since 1998. Now, after a 97-win season and baseball's best home record and an AL East title that involved staring down the Red Sox head-to-head most of the season, Tampa Bay has every reason to be confident. The Rays went 57-24 at Tropicana Field and kept winning at home in the division series winning both games against the White Sox before earning a split in Chicago. For the past 10 years, the Red Sox have beat up on the Devil Rays and have had a history of brawls, benches have cleared six times since 2000 including an incident at Fenway Park in June that resulted in eight suspensions. Boston entered this season with a 111-58 all-time record versus Tampa Bay although this season the Rays went 6-0 in one-run games and won the season series 10-8. This year truly is building into a legitimate rivalry. Daisuke Matsuzaka will be Boston's starter to open this series. He went five innings and allowed three runs in Game 2 in Los Angeles. Matsuzaka is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in the playoffs but pitched well against the Rays this season going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA although the right-hander lasted only five innings in each of his three outings striking out 17 but walking 11. Matsuzaka struggled with his control all season but he was often unhittable holding opponents to a .211 batting average. Tampa bay will see how Matsuzaka is throwing and see if they can get him to walk guys like he normally does and throw a lot of pitches early. 3rd basmen Longoria will play a key role in determining whether the Rays advance to the World Series as the rookie was arguably the team's most valuable player despite missing 40 games with a fractured wrist hitting .272 with 27 homers and 85 RBIs.Longoria had two homers and three hits in his first playoff game but went 1-for-12 the rest of the division series. James Shields is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA is the picture who ignited June's brawl after hitting Coco Crisp with a pitch will get the start tonight for Tampa Bay. Shields pitched 6 1-3 innings and allowed three runs in a 6-4 win in Game 1 over the White Sox. Shields was great against the Red Sox in St. Petersburg in the regular season going 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA but had two awful starts at Fenway. He lost both posting a 21.21 ERA in just 4 2-3 innings. with his biggest nemesis being slugger David Ortiz who is 7-for-14 with four doubles, two homers and six RBIs lifetime against Shields. Tampa Bay will take its time tonight in the batters box making this a long game and the Red Sox have had too much succes against Sheilds not to get to him tonight in a playoff game. Both pictures are prone to make mistakes and that wil be costly in a playoff game when batters are more patient and pay attention to detail.
TAKE OVER 8 runs BOSTON/TAMPA BAY

Nite Owl Sports
Louisville Cardinals / Memphis Tigers
3 units Memphis Tigers +6.5
We like Memphis in this match-up, which is LVille's first roadie of the season, after Cards went 1-2 ATS LY as road faves, in HC Steve kragthorpe's first year at The Ville. On the other hand, Memphis Tigers are 15-8 ATS L10 Y as home dogs and 8-4 as home dogs under present HC Tommy West. When these two schools hook up with each other, you usually expect a close, hard fought basketball game, not a FB game. But the fact is that until they stopped their annual rivalry in 2005 (largely because LVille had fewer openings for non-conf games after it left the C-USA to joiin the Big East), their rivalry on the gridiron was also quite competitive, wiith Memphis going 7-1 ATS as the series dog, including 3-0 L3 as a series home dog (despite losing all 3 of those close home games SU).
While Memphis started slowly TY, with a home loss to lowly Rice sandwiched between road losses to Ole Miss and Marshall, Tigers have played much better in L2 games, beating Arkie State at home and UAB in a high scoring thriller, on the road. And in those games, Tigers' offense was well balanced, with 192 YR (at 5.3 YPR) and 244 YP at UAB, and 243 YR (5.9 YPC) with 210 YP vs Arkie state. After those two good showings, Memphis QB Hall already has 1500 YP (nearly twice that of LVille QB Cantwell) to a cast of tall and experienced WRs, against defenses now being kept off balance by emerging JUCO RB Curtis Steele, who now has 578 YR on 6.4 YPC. And LVille is coming off of a disheartening come from ahead home loss in their LG (on nat TV), in which they blew a 21-10 lead to UConn and lost by basically choking in 4Q, including QB Cantwell, who threw a key INT that turned the ball over to UConn for their game victorious drive.
So take Tigers at +6 >, and with line starting to drop, get your bets in ASAP
