Friday Service Plays

Re: Friday Service Plays

LT Profits

Oakland Athletics @ Seattle Mariners Under 8.0

The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners begin a meaningless series to wrap up the season tonight, and do not look for many runs to be scored.

The Athletics acquired Sean Gallagher in the Rich Harden trade, and he is now showing why they were so high on him. Gallagher has been brilliant in his last three starts, posting a 2.04 ERA with a miniscule 0.96 WHIP in those outings. One of those starts was a Quality Start vs. these Mariners in Oakland in an Athletics victory last week.

Meanwhile, the Mariners have converted Brandon Morrow from a reliever into a starter because of his electric stuff. Well, all he did was allow one hit in 7.2 innings in his major league debut vs. the New York Yankees, and he has now allowed three runs or less in three of his four total starts. He too tosses a Quality Start vs. his opponent tonight in his last start, limiting Oakland to just two hits in 6.1 innings.

Look for both starters to duplicate their efforts from last week and both bullpens to keep this game Under the total.

Pick: Athletics, Mariners Under 8

Chicago Cubs @ Milwaukee
Play:1* Chicago Cubs +105

Despite the Cubs already locking up the best record in the National League and Milwaukee currently tied for the Wild Card spot with the Mets, I see no reason the Cubs don't win here tonight. I feel like Dempster will want one more quality start before Game 1 as he was named their Game 1 starter in the playoffs. Milwaukee has not helped themselves at all going 8-15 in the month of September. Cubs are scoring 5.4 runs per game overall this year. Ryan Dempster is 17-6 with a 2.99 ERA overall this year, 3.22 ERA on the road this season and 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA his last 3 starts. Jeff Suppan is 0-2 with a 12.27 ERA his last 3 starts. Cubs are 12-5 at Milwaukee last 3 years including 4-0 at Milwaukee this season. Dempster is 8-1 with a 2.99 ERA overall vs Milwaukee since 1997. We'll recommend a small play on the Chicago Cubs.

Connecticut Huskies at Louisville Cardinals

The Huskies are winning with their potent ground assault, ranked # 6 nationally in rushing, but will be facing a tough opponent. The Cardinals run defense is ranked second nationally, allowing just 42 rushing yards per game. Take Louisville at home.

Louisville Cardinals - 3.5

Mr A's

Connecticut at Louisville

Connecticut's one-dimensional offense will have a difficult time against the Cardinals’ defense, ranked No. 2 nationally against the run. Expect a close defensive battle at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Louisville is 22-3 in their last 25 home games.

Louisville Cardinals -3½

Re: Friday Service Plays

Stephen Nover

Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox
PICK: Cleveland Indians

Way to go Ozzie Guillen. That sure was a great decision last night to let Bobby Jenks try to go a third inning of relief.

The result was a 7-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins in 10 innings. The White Sox blew a five-run lead. They have to be demoralized returning home after being swept three games in Minnesota with the division lead at stake.

Now the White Sox are laying a medium-size price at home relying on young John Danks and a bullpen that probably is going to be without Jenks, who pitched 2 1/3 innings throwing 34 pitches last night.

This is a lot of pressure on Danks and the White Sox haven't been playing well for a while now, going 2-6 in their last eight games and 9-16 during their past 25 games.

Cleveland, on the other hand, is 30-16 in its last 46 games. The Indians have motivation trying to reach .500. They faced Danks earlier this month and got to him for four earned runs and eight hits in four innings.

Rookie Scott Lewis goes for the Indians. He's been outstanding in three starts, allowing three runs and 14 hits in 19 innings. The White Sox have yet to see him.

All the pressure is on the White Sox here. The price puts me on the Indians for a one-unit play.

Michael Cannon

Atlanta -105 at HOUSTON

Take the Braves for the road win over the Astros.

I know Atlanta is just playing out the string right now, while Houston has a slim shot at the playoffs, but this pitching matchup favors the Braves.

Brian Moehler will get the start for Houston and he’s 2-4 with a 7.71 ERA in his last six starts.  The right-hander is just 1-5 with a 5.44 ERA in 13 career appearances against the Braves.

Atlanta will start Jorge Campillo, who is 8-7 with a 3.76 ERA on the year.  Houston has yet to face the rookie, so that should give Campillo a slight advantage over the Astros lineup.

Take the Braves as they grab the road win.

Re: Friday Service Plays

Jeff Benton

Take the Brewers in a must-win home game against the Cubs.

After that incredible walk-off grand slam by Ryan Braun in the bottom of the 10th inning last night, I’m thinking the Brewers now just might be a team of destiny. Certainly, they have a ton of momentum on their side after that huge victory, which was the team’s fourth in a row to keep them tied with the Mets in the wild-card race. The best news for Milwaukee? It is not going to see the Cubs’ best players very much – if at all – in this final series of the season, including tonight.

With Chicago having absolutely nothing to play for – the team has clinched home-field advantage in the National League – manager Lou Pineilla has been resting regulars like Derek Lee, Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Mark DeRosa. A couple of those guys may be in the lineup tonight, but not all of them.

That’s big for Brewers starter Jeff Suppan, who has really struggled down the stretch and needs a solid outing here. As for Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, the guy has been awesome all year. But most of his damage has been done at Wrigley Field – which is why Pineilla has tabbed him as his Game 1 starter in the N.L. playoffs. When Dempster pitches on the road, the Cubs are just 6-6. And although Chicago is 4-0 in his four starts against the Brewers this season, I wouldn’t expect Dempster to give a max effort tonight – this is more or less like a spring-training tune-up start; clearly, the result doesn’t mean nearly as much as coming out of tonight in tip-top shape.

Bottom line: Given the Cubs’ makeshift lineup and the urgency with which Milwaukee is playing, I’ll side with the home team at this pick-em price.

Boston still has a shot to catch Tampa Bay and win the A.L. East, and New York has nothing left to play for. And the BoSox mean business, sending Daisuke Matsuzaka (18-2, 2.80 ERA) to the hill against the recently called-up and relatively unknown Alfredo Aceves, who is making just his sixth major league appearance and fourth big league start.

Boston has won four of its last five, and they are on additional streaks of 10-1 in series openers, 6-0 with Daisuke going on four days rest and 23-7 behind Matsuzaka at Fenway Park. Plus, in this rivalry, they've won three of the last four, at a time of the year when the games really count. New York had its too-little, too-late seven-game win streak snapped at Toronto in an 8-2 shelling Thursday night. There's more of that to come tonight in Beantown. Put your cash in the Sox.

Re: Friday Service Plays

Matt Rivers

For Friday take the price with the Nats.

(STAY WITH PLAY EVEN IF PITCHING CHANGE)

Obviously the Phillies have a lot more to play for and are the far superior team in terms of everything here but John Lannan has been very good this season and probably even better than Joe Blanton. To begin with getting the better hurler and about 240 or so back is a no-brainer. Then when you factor in how the Phils just stunk up the joint in their last two games in losing to the Braves at home and how Howard, Utley and Rollins at times go in those hitting funks and the team underachieves mightily I say why can't that happen one more time tonight?

Blanton has been very feast or famine and could get hit by Manny Acta's Nats who are obviously pretty bad but Guzman, Zimmerman, Milledge and a few others do have potential and have won this season in this spot in Philadelphia. I remember back to the second game of the season when Washington shocked Cole Hamels and the Phils at a very similar price. The Nats have won a surprisingly high number of high priced dog games like this one despite the porous overall record.

More times than not Philadelphia does win this game as they should but with a very solid Lannan on the bump there is no reason not to take a chance with Washington at this gaudy price!

Re: Friday Service Plays

Bob Majors

FLA +145 vs NYM

The Marlins travel to the NY Mets in an early evening game.  This game is very important for the Mets as they attempt to secure a spot as the NL representative in the Wildcard race.  The Mets are tied atop the wild card race with Milwaukee and 3 games to play.

Marlins Pitcher Christopher Volstad start on the mound against the Mets.  He is 3-1 on the road with a respectable 2.32 ERA and his team is 4-1 when starting.  In his previous game with the Mets, Volstad was 0-0 in 6.1 innings and a 1.42 ERA.  In his last 3 starts, he is 1-1 in 16 innings with a 2.25 ERA.

The Mets counter with Pitcher Michael Pelfrey.  He is 8-6 at home with a 2.94 ERA and his team is 11-6 when he starts.  In his previous games with the Marlins, Pelfrey is 0-3 in 19.1 innings  and a 7.91 ERA.  In his last 3 starts, he is 0-1 in 18.0 innings and a 4.50 ERA.

The Marlins have Pelfrey?s number when he pitches against them.  The Mets are uptight and need this win to keep their hopes alive.  The Marlins are spoilers and the statistics prove that theory.

Take the Marlins as the Underdog play of the day.

5 UNIT PLAY  (Game Of The Month)

LOUISVILLE -3.5 over Connecticut

The Huskies are 3-13-1 ATS in their last 17 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game and 0-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, while the Cardinals are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 weekday conf home games. UConn may be 4-0 on the year, but they have been inconsistent a little as they needed OT to beat Temple and even though they won by 3 over Baylor last week, they were outgained in the game. Louisville started off the season on a sour note with a 27-2 loss to Kentucky, but this team has responded nicely with two impressive wins. Not only have they outscored their last 2 opponents (Tenn Tech and Kansas St) by 25 ppg, but they have also outgained those two opponents by a combined 509 yards. The Huskies defense had been playing well through the first 3 games, but last week they showed some chinks in the armor, as they allowed Baylor to roll up 377 yards of offense and 28 points. The Cardinal offense may be better than Baylor's. UConn is mainly a run oriented team as they are ranked 6th in the nation in rushing, but they could find the going tough vs the nations 2nd ranked rushing defense, meaning they will have to turn to their 108th ranked passing offense to win this one. Noot gonna happen. The Cardinals are playing much better on both sides of the ball right now and I can see them easily winning by 10+ points in this one.

1 Unit on St. Louis Cardinals -120

St. Louis has reeled off three straight wins heading into play tonight.  They outscored the Diamondbacks 23-9 in their last series sweep.  Braden Looper has been virtually un-hittable when pitching against the Reds.  Looper is 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA lifetime in five starts against Cincinnati.  Bronson Arroyo is 5-17 on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 over the last 2 seasons.  The Cardinals are 11-2 in home games vs. an NL team with a batting average of .250 or worse in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons.  The Reds are 10-25 in Arroyo’s last 35 road starts overall.  Cash in with St. Louis as a small home favorite Friday.

3* on Oakland A’s +100

The A’s will keep sticking it to the Mariners tonight.  The Seattle Mariners entered the 2008 season with hopes of contending for an American League West title and earning their first playoff berth since 2001. Six months later, they're still competing - but on the opposite end of the spectrum.  The Mariners could seal the first overall selection in the 2009 First Year Player Draft as they host the Oakland Athletics on Friday.  Having lost 14 of their last 15, the Mariners have become the favorites to snag the top pick, with the National League East cellar-dwelling Washington Nationals (59-99) their only competition.  We’ll Play Against - Home teams (SEATTLE) - very bad AL offensive team (<=4.2 runs/game) against a team with a good bullpen (ERA<=3.75), with a starting pitcher whose gives up 5.5 or less hits/start.  This is a 42-20 ML System hitting 67.7% since 1997.  With Seattle having lost 14 of their last 15 overall, they have clearly given up on their season.  Bet Oakland on the road.

Re: Friday Service Plays

Scott Rickenbach

Atlanta Braves @ Houston Astros Sep
PICK: Atlanta Braves

The Braves definitely haven’t quit on the season as they continue to play hard and score a lot of runs. Scoring a lot of runs should not be a problem against the Astros tonight either. Brian Moehler continues to struggle for Houston here at the tail-end of the season and, although the Astros enter Friday’s action still mathematically alive for the postseason, they know their “true hopes” are all but gone. At this point it would take a miracle for the Astros to get into the playoff as Brewers wins and Mets wins on Thursday all but put the final nail in the coffin on Houston’s season. Jorge Campillo has been a real bright spot for the Braves this season and he’s coming off of a very strong outing in his last start. Look for Atlanta to get behind Campillo once again as they look to win for the fourth straight time with him on the mound. The Braves are offering nice value in this spot as Houston is the team in a must-win and yet the odds maker is telling you what you need to know here. Must win doesn’t mean will win and that’s especially true in a match-up where it’s Moehler vs Campillo! Play the Atlanta Braves

Re: Friday Service Plays

Lee Kostroski

Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox
PICK: 3* Under

This match-up of two young left-handers should be a low scoring game Friday night. The White Sox enter this game coming off a deflating loss and a series sweep and the offense is hitting just .224 in the last ten games. Chicago has scored three or fewer runs in seven of those ten games and the Sox have struggled against left-handed pitching. Chicago is just 6-11 in the last 17 games and the lack of run production from the powerful lineup has been the culprit.

Cleveland is a much less productive team on the road, averaging just 3.5 runs per game in the last nine road contests. The Indians face a tough situation facing long travel after a rough series in Boston and with the season closing to an end the Tribe have little incentive for a big effort. The Indians are hitting just .239 in the last ten games against left-handed pitching and Cleveland is 3-10 in the last 13 meetings with Chicago.

Cleveland starter Scott Lewis has made just three starts in his career but he is 3-0, allowing only three runs in 19 innings. He had his best start away from home and the White Sox will be unfamiliar with his stuff. Chicago starter John Danks has made back-to-back scoreless starts and on the season he owns an impressive 3.20 ERA. Danks has allowed just six runs in over 18 innings against Cleveland this season and the ‘under’ is 6-2 in his last eight home starts.
