Lakers' Bynum out for 8 weeks with knee injury
January 14, 2008

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Andrew Bynum, a big factor in the Los Angeles Lakers' strong start, will be out at least eight weeks because of an injured left knee.

MRI tests and an examination Monday by team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo revealed Bynum had temporarily dislocated his kneecap and suffered a bone bruise.

Bynum is expected to make a full recovery, the Lakers said in a press release.

"If it's not an operation, a surgery he has to go through, we have to be pleased with it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said before Los Angeles played at Seattle on Monday night. "He should be able to recover. The process of us monitoring the season for eight weeks without him, as big an influence as he's been, is going to be difficult."

The 20-year-old center, who leads the NBA in field-goal percentage, was injured early in the third quarter of Sunday night's 100-99 victory over Memphis when he landed on teammate Lamar Odom's left foot while going for a rebound.

Bynum crumpled to the court, and teammates Kwame Brown and Ronny Turiaf had to carry him to the locker room as fans at Staples Center chanted, "By-num, By-num."

A third-year pro taken by the Lakers with the 10th overall pick in the 2005 draft, Bynum is averaging 13.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.06 blocked shots, and has made 189 of his 297 field goal attempts (63.6 percent). He is the league's 11th-leading rebounder and ninth-leading shot-blocker.

The Lakers (25-11) had won six straight games -- their longest winning streak in almost four years -- and 16 of 19 entering Monday night's game at Seattle.

The schedule gets much tougher after that, with games against Phoenix, Denver, San Antonio, Dallas and Cleveland. Then, after a home game against the Knicks, the Lakers begin a nine-game road trip Jan. 31 at Detroit.

"It will take us a little bit of time to figure out on the floor, how we're going to still have the success we've been having without him," Lakers guard Derek Fisher said. "That's what we want to do and we feel like we can do it, but I think it's going to take some time."

Brown moved into the starting lineup for Bynum on Monday and Turiaf would serve as his backup.

Brown, limited to 41 games by injuries last season, has averaged 5.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in eight games after missing 19 because of a sprained left knee and ankle. He entered Monday night's matchup against Seattle having played in 15 games this season.

The Lakers already had a depth problem at center because Chris Mihm has been sidelined with a sore right Achilles' tendon and isn't expected to return for at least two more weeks.

"Kwame is going to have to take a big load of the playing time," Jackson said. "We're going to have to shore up the boards a little bit because that's where Andrew really was effective for us and they're going to split duties, Ronny and Kwame."

Bynum expressed optimism as he left the arena after Sunday night's game walking under his own power with a soft brace on his knee while his personal trainer, Sean Zarzana, carried a pair of crutches.

"I'm not in too much pain, only when I bend it," Bynum said. "I don't think it's serious at all. I can move it left and right. Just to take a step forward is the only thing that really hurts. I never heard a pop."

In his last full game before being injured, Bynum had 25 points and a career-high 17 rebounds Friday night in a 110-105 victory over Milwaukee.

Marbury to miss at least two more games
January 14, 2008

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stephon Marbury will miss at least two more games and could require surgery on his left ankle.

Marbury went after practice Monday to see specialist Dr. William Hamilton, who found inflammation around a chronically fractured bone spur. Hamilton recommended Marbury wear a walking boot for three days before being evaluated with an MRI exam.

Marbury will miss games for the Knicks against Washington on Tuesday and at New Jersey on Wednesday, but told reporters at practice he would have surgery if it was recommended.

"If the doctor says I have bone spurs in my ankle and he says I need surgery, I'm going to get it," Marbury said. "I'm going to get it taken care of. I'm not going to wait or hesitate because that's my career."

Marbury didn't practice Saturday and missed Sunday's 89-65 victory over Detroit because his ankle was sore. He needed surgery to remove bone spurs from the same ankle after he was hurt in 2001, though the procedure was done over the summer.

This has already been the worst season of Marbury's 12-year career. He has missed 12 games, most after his father died during a game last month, and is averaging a career-low 13.9 points.

He also skipped a game in Phoenix, leaving the team after coach Isiah Thomas told him he was considering removing the point guard from the starting lineup.

"It's been tough," Marbury said. "This isn't the year that we expected, so I'm not happy with the way how things are going. But there's always next year."

Thomas said he didn't know how long Marbury would be out, but expected him to return sometime this season. He seemed to leave that in doubt before Sunday night's game, responding to a question about Marbury's frustration with the offense by saying: "He's not playing tonight so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it if he decides to play again."

Once one of the league's most durable players, Marbury has struggled to stay healthy in recent years. He was limited to 60 games two years ago because of shoulder and knee injuries, and missed eight games last season, mostly with a toe injury.

Status of Rhodes, Hansbrough unclear for Miss. St.
January 14, 2008

Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- It's not clear how much injured Mississippi State starters Ben Hansbrough and Charles Rhodes will be able to play in Tuesday's game against revitalized Kentucky, if at all.

Coach Rick Stansbury said Monday that Hansbrough may not play after breaking the middle finger on his left hand in Saturday's win over Georgia.

"He has a fracture," Stansbury said. "I think Ben's probably doubtful versus Kentucky. I think that it will be difficult for him to be ready."

The status of Rhodes, who reinjured his sprained left ankle against Georgia, will depend on how much swelling he suffers. He was to be evaluated before Monday's practice.

"He's real ginger on it," Stansbury said.

Rhodes missed three games before returning to score eight points against Georgia. The Bulldogs (11-5, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) went to a small lineup in his absence and have thrived.

Mississippi State has won six straight by a margin of 20.8 points per game and could start 3-0 in the SEC for the first time since the 1993-94 season with a win over Kentucky (7-7, 1-0). Using essentially a four-guard lineup with the nation's leading shot blocker, Jarvis Varnado, in the middle, the Bulldogs lead the nation in opponents' shooting percentage (35.3 percent) and have held their last three opponents under 30 percent shooting.

With Varnado leading the attack with 10 blocks, the Bulldogs set a school record against Georgia with 16 blocks in a 60-49 win. Varnado is averaging 5.19 blocks per game, while the Bulldogs are second in the nation with 8.6 blocks per game.

"They compete, they really do compete," Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie said. "Their perimeter defense is filled with athletes and they really teach them how to play the perimeter and compete, and they have the best shot-blocker in college basketball."

One of those perimeter defenders is Hansbrough, who leads the Bulldogs in 3-pointers and free throw shooting. The next guard off the bench for Mississippi State is Riley Benock, a freshman who averages 2.3 points per game.

If Rhodes can return, that will take some of the pressure off Mississippi State. But there still will be plenty. The Bulldogs are facing a revitalized Kentucky team that knocked off then-No. 13 Vanderbilt 79-73 in double overtime on Saturday.

Stansbury said it's obvious Kentucky is coming together after its slow start at just the right time -- the start of the SEC season.

"It just wasn't a good win, I think they played exceptionally well," he said of the Vanderbilt game. "Billy's done a great job holding that team together. He's got them playing their best in this new season, so there's new life for them."

January 14, 2008

asper, Meeks may miss Mississippi State game
January 14, 2008

Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky may be without guards Derrick Jasper and Jodie Meeks on Tuesday when the Wildcats travel to Mississippi State.

Meeks sat out Saturday's 79-73 double overtime win against then No. 13 Vanderbilt with a strained hip flexor. Jasper sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee after colliding with teammate Perry Stevenson.

Coach Billy Gillispie said neither player practiced on Monday, but both would travel with the team and be game-time decisions.

Both players have been hobbled with injuries most of the season for the Wildcats. Meeks has missed eight games this season because of various injuries, while Jasper missed the first 10 games while recovering from microfracture surgery in his left knee.

Televised Tip Sheet
VegasInsider.com

There are three games on ESPN Tuesday, so let’s take a look.

**Ohio State at Michigan State**

--Michigan State (14-2 straight up, 6-5 against the spread) is in bounce-back mode following a 43-36 loss at Iowa as a 10½-point favorite. The Spartans failed to cover the spread for the fourth straight game.

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Tom Izzo’s team as a nine-point favorite with a total of 130. As of Monday night, most books had adjusted the Spartans to 7 ½.

--Ohio State (12-4 SU, 6-6 ATS) has won three straight games against Michigan St. However, the Spartans are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.

--Ohio St. saw its eight-game winning streak halted when it dropped a 75-68 decision Saturday at Purdue. The Buckeyes lost outright as one-point favorites, while the 143 combined points jumped ‘over’ the 131-point total.

--Michigan State owns a 4-0 SU record and a 3-0-1 ATS mark when listed as a single-digit favorite. Meanwhile, Ohio St. is 2-3 both SU and ATS in five games as an underdog.

--The ‘under’ is 16-6-2 in Michigan State’s last 24 Big Ten games. However, the ‘over’ is 5-2 for the Spartans at home this year.

--ESPN will provide television coverage at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Creighton at Northern Iowa**

--Most sports books are listing Northern Iowa (10-6 SU, 7-6 ATS) as a one-point favorite. LVSC sent the total out at 122.

--Creighton (12-3 SU, 7-4 ATS) has won seven consecutive games against No. Iowa. The Bluejays are 6-1 ATS during that stretch.

--Dana Altman’s squad has won three in a row since losing its first two games in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Bluejays are off a 68-65 win Saturday at Wichita St. They covered the number as 1 ½-point road ‘chalk.’

--The ‘under’ has cashed in four straight games between these MVC rivals.

--The ‘over’ is 8-3 overall for Creighton, while the ‘under’ is 8-5 overall for the Panthers.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**Kentucky at Mississippi State**

--Most spots have installed Mississippi State (11-5 SU, 7-6 ATS) as an eight-point favorite with LVSC sending the total out at 134. The Bulldogs have won six in a row, posting a 4-0 spread record in the process. They are out to a 2-0 start in SEC play, picking up wins at LSU (61-39) and Georgia (60-49).

--Jamont Gordon paced Mississippi St. with 15 points and nine rebounds in Saturday’s win over UGA as a 10-point ‘chalk.’ Charles Rhodes returned to action after missing three straight games. Rhodes played 12 minutes, producing eight points, three rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. He drained 4-of-5 shots from the field. Jarvis Varnado nearly had a triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and 10 blocks.

--Kentucky (7-7 SU, 3-7 ATS) won its SEC opener Saturday at Rupp Arena, beating previously-unbeaten Vanderbilt in double overtime, 79-73. The Wildcats hooked up their backers as one-point home favorites. Patrick Patterson paced the winners with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford added 20 and 17 points, respectively. Bradley and Patterson both played all 50 minutes, while Crawford logged 48.

--Kentucky has played horrible in both of its road games, losing 70-51 at Indiana and 83-69 at Houston.

--Rick Stansbury’s team leads the nation in field-goal defense, limiting opponents to an abysmal 35.4 percent field-goal shooting accuracy. The Bulldogs held UGA and LSU to a combined 22.9 shooting percentage. Varnado, who also blocked 10 shots earlier this year against Miami, leads the country in blocked shots with 5.2 per game.

--Mississippi St. owns a 22-9 spread record in its last 31 home games.

--Billy Gillispie is expected to have a short rotation in Starkville. The availability of both Jodie Meeks and Derrick Jasper is in question. Meeks (hip flexor) did not play against Vandy and Jasper strained his MCL.

--The ‘over’ is on a 7-3 run for UK, but the ‘under’ is 4-1-1 in Mississippi State’s last six games with a total.

--ESPN will provide the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

BOSTON WIZARDS

It gave the Wizards their fifth win in the last six games overall, and against Boston. It's Boston's first two-game losing streak of the season. Boston also lost consecutive games at home for the first time all season and dropped to 30-6. The Celtics are 2-3 over their last five and have averaged 85 points a game over that span.

MOVING UP

Kobe Bryant scored 48 points and swished an 18-footer with 4.3 seconds left in overtime to help the Lakers beat Seattle 123-121 on Monday night. It was Bryant's 87th career 40-point game, one behind Elgin Baylor for third all-time in league history. With the victory, Lakers' coach Phil Jackson passed Bill Fitch for sixth place on the all-time wins list with 945. Los Angeles has won seven straight - its longest win streak since an 11-game stretch in March 2004 - and moved into a tie with Phoenix atop the Pacific Division.

The Kings also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Mavericks.

Cavaliers coach Mike Brown received a two-year contract extension Monday that will keep him with the club through the 2010-11 season. His contract was to expire after the 2008-09 season. Brown is in his third season with the Cavaliers, who won their first Eastern Conference title last season before they were swept in the finals by San Antonio.

INJURED

Bynum was hurt early in the third quarter of Sunday night's 100-99 victory over Memphis when he landed on teammate Lamar Odom's left foot while going for a rebound. Bynum is averaging 13.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.06 blocked shots, and is shooting 63.6 percent from the field.

OUT

Stephon Marbury will miss at least two more games and could require surgery on his left ankle. Marbury went after practice Monday to see specialist Dr. William Hamilton, who found inflammation around a chronically fractured bone spur. Marbury will miss games for the Knicks against Washington on Tuesday and at New Jersey on Wednesday.

Carmelo Anthony scored 35 points and Marcus Camby scored 20 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in Denver's 119-116 loss to Charlotte. ... SPEAKING

''I always felt like I could come back and play. It was just a matter of where my wind was. I told coach, 'I can only give you 28 minutes a night right now.' He said, 'As long as they're good.'''-Sacramento's Kevin Martin after Monday's 122-120 win over Dallas. Martin scored 39 points in just under 28 minutes. Martin, who missed 17 games with a groin injury, has scored 64 points in his two games back.

Re: Betting News and Notes - Jan 15

Ohio State (12-4, 6-6 ATS) at (11) Michigan State (14-2, 5-5-2 ATS)

Two teams coming off of their first Big Ten losses of the season meet up in East Lansing, Mich., where the Spartans will try to rebound from one of the worst offensive showings in school history when they host Ohio State.

Michigan State went to Iowa on Saturday as a 10-point favorite and ended up losing 43-36, the lowest point total for the school since 1952 and fewest points for any Spartans team in the shot-clock era. Michigan State, which had been averaging 77.7 points per game prior to Saturday and had scored at least 63 points in its first 15 games, had an 11-game winning streak snapped in the defeat.

The Spartans are 2-1 in Big Ten action, but 0-3 ATS. In fact, they’ve failed to cover in four straight contests – all as a double-digit chalk – since opening the season 5-1-2 ATS.

The Buckeyes took an eight-game winning streak to Purdue on Saturday and dropped a 75-68 decision as one-point road underdog. Ohio State is 3-1 in league play (2-2 ATS) and has still cashed in four of its last six lined contests overall.

Ohio State has won three straight against the Spartans (2-1 ATS), including sweeping the season series last year. The Buckeyes eked out a 66-64 win at home, coming up short as an 8½-point home favorite, then won 63-54 in East Lansing a week later as a one-point road underdog.

The ‘dog has cashed in each of the last four meetings, and the straight-up winner is 9-1 ATS in the last 10.

Going back to last year, Ohio State is 6-2 ATS in Big Ten contests, while Michigan State has failed to cash in its last five league games.

The under is 16-6-2 in Michigan State’s last 24 conference games (2-1 this year) and 5-2 in the last seven series battles.

ATS ADVANTAGE: OHIO STATE and UNDER

(21) Miami, Fla. (14-1, 8-0 ATS) at Boston College (11-4, 5-5 ATS)

Miami looks to defeat Boston College for the first time since 2001 when these ACC rivals clash at the Silvio O. Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Hurricanes opened ACC play with Saturday’s 78-68 victory over Georgia Tech, covering as a six-point home favorite to keep its perfect ATS mark intact. Miami has bounce back from its only loss of the season – a 76-70 home defeat to Winthrop in a non-lined game – with consecutive victories.

Boston College is coming off its most impressive win of the season, Saturday’s 112-73 rout of Wake Forest as a three-point home chalk in the conference debut for both schools. Prior to the win, the Eagles had lost back-to-back games, both at home, to undefeated Kansas (85-60) and Division II Robert Morris (57-51). Also, they halted an 0-3 ATS slide with the easy victory over Wake Forest.

Boston College owns a 12-game winning streak against Miami, going 9-1 ATS in the last 10 overall and 4-1 ATS in the last five in Chestnut Hill. Last year, the Eagles beat the Hurricanes three times: 82-63 as a 12-point home favorite, 75-68 as a five-point road favorite and 74-71 in overtime as a 7½-point chalk in the ACC Tournament.

The ‘Canes are on impressive ATS streaks of 14-3-1 overall, 7-0 on the road and 4-1 in the ACC. However, they’ve failed to cash in nine of their last 10 games against winning teams.

B.C. is 5-0 ATS in its last five against teams with a winning record and 4-0-1 ATS in its last five Tuesday outings. On the downside, Al Skinner’s squad is just 3-5 ATS on its home floor (9-4 SU).

The over is 7-3 in the Eagles’ last 10 overall (4-1 in the last five), but the under is 6-2 in Miami’s eight lined outings (5-0 “under” on the road).

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

Denver (22-14, 18-18 ATS) at Atlanta (17-17, 18-16 ATS)

The Nuggets conclude a quick two-game, two-day road trip when they head to Atlanta to face the Hawks.

Denver blew a fourth-quarter lead at Charlotte last night and fell 119-116 to the Bobcats as a 4½-point road favorite. Despite the setback, the Nuggets are still 8-4 in their last 12 and 8-3 ATS in their last 11, including 4-1 ATS on the road.

Atlanta concludes a five-game homestand tonight, having alternated SU and ATS wins and losses in the first four contests, most recently routing Chicago 105-84 as a four-point chalk on Sunday. Going back to Dec. 29, the Hawks are just 2-5 SU (3-4 ATS) after going 8-2 SU (7-3 ATS) in their previous 10.

The road team won both of last year’s meetings, with the Hawks scoring a 98-96 upset as a 12-point ‘dog and the Nuggets getting revenge in a 100-87 victory as an eight-point favorite. Atlanta is 6-2 ATS in the last eight clashes (4-4 SU), and the underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last nine.

The Nuggets have scored at least 109 points in five straight games and have reached triple digits 16 times in their last 20 games, going 13-7 SU, but just 11-9 ATS.

Atlanta has limited 11 of its last 17 opponents to 98 points or fewer, going 8-3 SU and ATS in those 11 games.

The Hawks are on an 8-3 roll at home (7-4 ATS).

Denver is on ATS runs of 4-1 against the Southeast Division, 35-17 against the Eastern Conference and 20-7 as an underdog of less than five points.

Atlanta is on positive ATS streaks of 10-2 as a favorite of less than five points and 6-1 when playing on one day of rest.

The over is 5-1 in the Hawks’ last six overall and 5-0 in Denver’s last five on the road.

ATS ADVANTAGE: ATLANTA and OVER

Toronto (20-17, 20-16-1 ATS) at Detroit (28-10, 24-13-1 ATS)

The Pistons return home following their most embarrassing loss of the season as they host the Raptors, who are coming off an impressive double-overtime win.

Detroit capped a four-game, five-day road trip at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, losing 89-65 to the lowly Knicks as an eight-point road favorite. Not only did the Pistons set a season-low for points, but they came within three points of setting a dubious franchise record.

Detroit has followed up an 11-game winning streak by losing three of its last five, averaging only 85.8 points per game. The Pistons are just 1-4 ATS during this stretch after going 18-1-1 ATS in their previous 20.

Toronto outlasted the red-hot Blazers 116-109 in double-overtime two days ago, cashing as a 5½-point home favorite. The Raptors are on a 3-0 SU and ATS roll after going 2-6 SU and ATS in their previous eight.

The straight-up winner is 32-4-1 ATS in Toronto’s games this season, including 11-0 ATS in the last 11 overall and 11-1 ATS in the last 12 on the road. The winner is also 23-1-1 ATS in Detroit’s last 25 contests (11-1 at home).

Detroit went to Canada on Jan. 4 and capped its 11-game winning streak by besting the Raptors 101-85, easily cashing as a 4½-point favorite. The Pistons are 8-2 SU in the last 10 meetings (6-3-1 ATS). However, Toronto has cashed in nine of the last 12 trips to Detroit.

The Raptors are 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four on the highway.

The Pistons lost to Boston 92-85 in their most recent home game, snapping a seven-game SU and ATS winning streak at home. For the season, Flip Saunders’ crew is 13-3 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, going 11-5 ATS, including 7-1 ATS in the last eight.

The under is 3-1 in Toronto’s last four on the highway and 20-7 in its last 27 against the Central Division. Also, the under is 4-1 in Detroit’s last four overall and 12-4 in the Pistons’ 16 home games this season (7-1 “under’ in the last eight). However, the over is 7-3 in the last 10 series clashes.

ATS ADVANTAGE: NONE

Re: Betting News and Notes - Jan 15

Tuesday NBA Gameday

The Detroit Pistons will be looking to snap the Toronto Raptors' three-game winning streak when the two teams meet on the court on Tuesday night. Here is your NBA Gameday:

Chicago Bulls at Orlando Magic

The Bulls are still having a hard time escaping the basement of the Central Division, never mind getting back into contention for a playoff berth. Chicago is coming off a 105-84 loss to the Hawks on Sunday, which dropped their record to 14-21 on the year. Luol Deng had a team-high 28 points for the Bulls in the loss, and Andres Nocioni scored 20.

Orlando still holds down top spot in the Southeast Division, but they've now lost five of their six games in the month of January. The Magic's sole win this month came last Wednesday, when they slipped past the Clippers. Orlando is coming off a 119-115 loss to the Jazz on Saturday night, with Dwight Howard picking up 29 points and 15 boards.

Toronto Raptors at Detroit Pistons

The Raptors are going to have a hard time chasing down the Celtics in the Atlantic Division, but their three-game winning streak has at least pushed them to 20-17 on the season. Toronto is coming off a 116-109 OT win over the Blazers on Sunday, with Chris Bosh scoring a game-high 38 points. The Raptors lost 101-85 to Detroit on January 4.

Detroit looks like they'll cruise to the Central Division title this season, but they still suffered an embarrassing 89-65 loss to the Knicks on Sunday. Only two Pistons managed to score double-digit points in that game - Antonio McDyess had 15, and Chauncey Billups had 14. The Pistons had previously won four of six January contests.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Memphis Grizzlies

The Cavaliers have won five of six games this month to at least remain just single digits behind the Pistons in the division. Cleveland got back over .500 with a 113-106 double-overtime win over the Bobcats on Friday. LeBron James scored a game-high 31 points and grabbed 19 boards in that Friday contest, and Anderson Varejao had a 16-18 night.

The Grizzlies are the only team in the Southwest Division below the .500 mark on the season, and their horrible month of December has carried over into January. Memphis lost their fourth game in a row on Sunday night (to the Lakers), and they're now just 2-5 since the beginning of 2008. The Grizzlies are just 6-12 on their own court this season.

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers

The Suns are 7-3 in their past 10 games, but the Lakers have still been closing the gap on them in the Pacific Division standings. Phoenix was knocked off 108-86 by Utah on Thursday night, but they bounced back with a 122-114 win over the Bucks on Saturday. Steve Nash had a game-high 35 points in that win, and Amare Stoudemire scored 31.

The Clippers are 1-9 in their past 10 games, they've lost four in a row, and they've yet to pick up a victory in 2008. It's not surprising, then, that they're mired in the basement of the Pacific Division. The Clippers were edged 95-94 by the Mavericks on Saturday, with Tim Thomas scoring 21 points in the loss. Corey Maggette picked up 20 points that day.
