Pacers F O'Neal misses third straight game
ASSOCIATED PRESS

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal missed his third straight game Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers with swelling in his left knee and lower leg.

The timetable for the six-time All-Star's return is uncertain. He is listed as day-to-day.

It was the 86th regular-season game he has missed in just over three seasons.

O'Neal had offseason surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee that hobbled him during the final two months of last season.

He hurt the knee again on Oct. 8 during a practice, and later hyperextended it.

NBA

Houston (7-7 SU, 5-9 ATS) at L.A. Clippers (6-6 SU, 5-7 ATS)

The Rockets visit the Staples Center in Los Angeles for a game against the Clippers in a battle of struggling Western Conference squads.

Houston opened the season 6-1, then went on a six-game losing streak (1-5 ATS) that finally came to an end with Saturday’s 109-81 rout of the Rockets as six-point home favorites. Tonight’s contest kicks off a four-game West Coast road swing for Houston.

The Clippers have dropped four of their last five and six of eight (1-7 ATS), including Saturday’s 98-89 home loss to the Hornets as three-point underdogs. Los Angeles has been favored in just one of its last 10 games, during which Mike Dunleavy’s squad is just 2-8 ATS.

The Rockets are just 2-5 ATS on the highway this season, posting an average of 94 points a game and giving up 95.7 ppg.

The Clippers are just 2-3 ATS on their home court, averaging 96.7 ppg while allowing 97 ppg.

Houston has won seven of the last 10 meetings with Los Angeles (5-5 ATS), including the last two back in March. The road team is 16-5 ATS in the last 21 head-to-head meetings, including Houston’s 92-87 victory as a three-point chalk on March 28.

The under is 7-3 in the Clippers’ last 10 overall, but the over has been the play six of the last seven meetings in this series.

ATS ADVANTAGE: HOUSTON

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Wake Forest (3-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) vs. Iowa (4-2 SU, 1-3 ATS)

The Demon Deacons get their stiffest test of the young season when they travel to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes in an ACC-Big Ten matchup.

Wake Forest kicked off its season with three easy home games, beating Fairfield, North Carolina Central and Winston-Salem, all by double digits. Only one was a lined contest when the Demon Deacons beat Fairfield 85-60 as 12½-point favorites.

Iowa opened its season with four easy wins at home (1-1 ATS) and then traveled to South Padre Island, Texas, for a tournament over the weekend and lost two games. The Hawkeyes fell to Bradley 67-56 on Friday as 3½-point underdogs and then suffered a 75-62 setback to Utah State on Saturday night as three-point favorites.

Wake Forest is averaging 77 points a game this season, compared with Iowa’s 60.3 points per game. However, both teams are making 45 percent of their field-goal attempts.

The Demon Deacons are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.

Going back to last season, Iowa is mired in a 1-4 ATS slump at home. Also, the Hawkeyes are 1-5 ATS in their last six against ACC teams.

The under is 9-3 in Wake Forest’s last 12 on the road, but the over is 6-2 in Iowa’s last eight Monday contests.

Re: Betting News and Notes - Nov 26th

Maggette could play against Houston

Team's leading scorer, who has missed four games because of a hamstring strain, has responded to therapy and appears on track to return sooner than expected.

Help is on the way.

The Clippers, mired in a 2-6 slide, will probably have the services of leading scorer Corey Maggette for tonight's game against the Houston Rockets.

Maggette, sidelined the last four games because of a strained right hamstring, was originally slated to miss two to three weeks. But he responded well to therapy, including laser treatment that penetrated the injured area.

"Last time, you heard it was supposed to be three weeks," Maggette said, speaking with reporters Sunday. "But everything is doing well and I had the opportunity to rest it and get some good strengthening from therapists and it's feeling good.

"Most likely, I'll be playing [against Houston]."

Maggette played one on one against reserve forward Josh Powell on Sunday and appeared mobile and agile, driving to the rim and connecting on his outside shot.

They split the first two games and Maggette took the last, one he called "the championship game."

The Clippers have averaged 89.25 points without Maggette, whose scoring average is 19.8 points a game. In games he's played, they are averaging 99.88 points.

"If he feels good [tonight], he may give it a shot," Coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Obviously it will be great to get him back. We'll just have to see from the standpoint of no practice time."

Maggette drives to the rim hard and is adept at getting to the foul line. But his play does leave him prone to hard fouls.

He bruised his tailbone against the Indiana Pacers on Nov. 7 and continued to play. The injury caused him to overcompensate and he hurt his hamstring against the Golden State Warriors the following week.

"Due to the way I play and how strong I go to the basket, you are going to have nicks and bruises. There's nothing I can do about it," Maggette said.

"Believe me, if I could shoot like [New Orleans Hornets forward] Peja Stojakovic, I would be out here," he said, gesturing to the three-point line on the Clippers' practice court.

"But that's not my game. I can shoot the ball, but it helps my team out by me attacking the basket and getting the other team in foul trouble."

Maggette said having another scorer on the floor would help unclog the middle, as opponents have been sending double teams quicker than usual at center Chris Kaman.

"Hopefully, I can just come back in and give us some boost and take some pressure off [Kaman] because he's getting a lot of double teams," Maggette said. "I think our team is not doing bad. We've had some bad breaks with player injuries, but I think we'll be all right."

Reserve point guard Brevin Knight, who missed the last two games because of a strained right groin, probably will play tonight.

The 6-9 forward sustained the injury during Saturday's loss to the Houston Rockets and did not play in the second half.

St. Bonaventure's Cook ruled ineligible
November 26th, 2007

St. Bonaventure, NY (Sports Network) - St. Bonaventure learned on Monday that freshman forward Da'Quan Cook has been ruled ineligible for the 2007-2008 season.

"It's unfortunate that Da'Quan can't participate this season because he's an outstanding player and an even better kid," said Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt. "I have no doubt that Da'Quan will come through this as an even stronger person and be ready for next season."

Cook averaged 13.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, leading his Virginia high school to a state final four appearance.

The school, nestled in the western part of the New York's southern tier, is no stranger to sanctions, as the fallout from an academic scandal involving a junior college transfer in 2003 rocked the program.
