Another traditional IndyCar Series track will be missing from the schedule with the absence of Michigan International Speedway on the 2008 IRL slate.

"Since its inaugural running in 2002, Michigan International Speedway, the state of Michigan, city of Jackson and other local communities made a major commitment to growing the IndyCar Series event," MIS president Roger Curtis said.

"Since its inaugural running in 2002, Michigan International Speedway, the state of Michigan, city of Jackson and other local communities made a major commitment to growing the IndyCar Series event," said track president Roger Curtis said. "I had hoped that we’d be able to reach an agreement with the IRL for 2008 given our historical investment in Indy Car racing that dates back four decades. We will focus all of our efforts on elevating our remaining marquee events, including providing our fans with a memorable race day experience.

"In addition, Michigan International Speedway will continue to seek growth opportunities by exploring the feasibility of developing a road course for potential rental and appropriate spectator events as well as other ancillary events that utilize the track facilities."

MIS will host two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends in 2008.

Indy-type cars have competed at Michigan since 1968.

The track now joins Gateway International Raceway, Phoenix International Raceway, California Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway as superspeedways no longer hosting IRL events.
