NHL news and notes: March 19

Monday, March 19, 2007

The goalies below have been confirmed by a source:

Jocelyn Thibault, Pittsburgh Penguins - Thibault is the probable starter for Monday's game against the Rangers, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette & the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. With the Penguins playing another back-to-back set later on in the week, it's possible that Marc-Andre Fleury may only get two starts in this very important week where fantasy playoffs are concerned. This is especially significant for those who play in leagues that require weekly lineup changes.

Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers - Lundqvist is the probable starter for Monday's game against the Penguins, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette & the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The goalies below have not been confirmed by any sources:

Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks - Luongo is the probable starter for Monday's game against the Oilers.

Dwayne Roloson, Edmonton Oilers
- Roloson is the probable starter for Monday's game against the Canucks.

SCOREBOARD
Monday, March 19

Vancouver at Edmonton (9 p.m. EDT).

The Oilers' 10-game losing streak is one shy of the franchise record set in 1993.

STARS

Sunday

-Alexander Semin and Tomas Fleischmann, Capitals. Semin got a natural hat trick in the second period and Fleischmann had two goals and two assists and Washington beat Tampa Bay 7-1.

-Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk, Avalanche. Sakic had four assists, including Hejduk's goal 19 seconds into overtime, and Colorado rallied to beat San Jose 4-3.

-Mike Ribeiro, Stars, scored two goals, including the game-winner with 40 seconds left in overtime to send Dallas to a 5-4 victory over Phoenix.

-Keith Tkachuk, Thrashers, scored a power-play goal with 38 seconds left in overtime to give Atlanta a 4-3 victory over Buffalo.

-Mike Cammalleri, Kings, had two goals to lead Los Angeles to a 5-3 win at Anaheim.

RUDE HOSTS

Atlanta's home winning streak reached seven games with its 4-3 overtime victory over Buffalo on Sunday.

INCHING CLOSER

Colorado pulled to within four points of the struggling Calgary Flames for eighth place in the Western Conference after its 4-3 overtime win over San Jose on Sunday night. The Avalanche are 8-0-1 in their last nine games, while the Flames have dropped three straight and five of six.

ALL TIED UP

Pittsburgh tied Ottawa for fourth place in the Eastern Conference after its 4-3 shootout win over the Senators on Sunday night. The Penguins, who have won five in a row, are 7-0-1 in their past eight and moved within two points of New Jersey for the Atlantic Division lead.

SHOOTING STARS

Dallas has won five of six after Sunday night's 5-4 overtime win over Phoenix.

SNAPPED

Colorado's Paul Stastny had his rookie record scoring streak halted at 20 games after getting shut out in Sunday night's 4-3 overtime win over San Jose. Stastny scored 11 goals and had 18 assists during his streak, the second-longest in franchise history behind Mats Sundin's 30-game stretch in 1992-93.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Dustin Penner broke Anaheim's rookie scoring record with a first-period goal in Sunday night's 5-3 loss to Los Angeles. The goal gave him 42 points on the season, one more than Chris Kunitz had last season.

MILESTONE

San Jose's Ron Wilson coached in his 1,000th game Sunday night, becoming the 13th coach in NHL history to reach that milestone and only the third active one. Ottawa's Bryan Murray and Florida's Jacques Martin are the only other active coaches to do it.

COYOTE UGLY

Phoenix is 1-7-1 in its past nine games following a 5-4 loss at Dallas on Sunday night.

CONSISTENT

Washington won consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 6-9 after its 7-1 rout of Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Capitals snapped a nine-game losing streak with Friday's win over Toronto.

SPEAKING

''He came down really slow, a guy like that who doesn't get many minutes coming down in the shootout, you know he's got something coming up. It was a funny move. I didn't know what to expect.'' - Ottawa goalie Ray Emery after surrendering Jarkko Ruutu's shootout goal that gave Pittsburgh a 4-3 win on Sunday night.

Predators' Tootoo suspended five games

New York, NY (Sports Network) - The NHL on Monday suspended Nashville Predators forward Jordin Tootoo five games for punching Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas in the face.

The incident occurred late in the third period of the Predators 3-2 win on Saturday in Nashville.

Robidas was knocked unconscious on the play and was carried off the ice on a stretcher. He will be out at least a week with a concussion.

Robidas was coming to the defense of teammate Mike Modano and was assessed a minor for charging on the play. Tootoo received a double-minor for roughing.

"While a player is entitled to defend himself, Mr. Tootoo's forceful blow to Robidas' head was an overly aggressive and inappropriate response," NHL senior executive vice-president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell said. "The fact that Mr. Tootoo's actions resulted in an injury to his opponent also was a factor in the decision."

The 24-year-old Tootoo has three goals, four assists and 104 penalty minutes in 61 games this season.
