49ers drop two straight
The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a 29-27 loss to the Chargers last week in Los Angeles. They are now 1-3 on the season, 1-3 against the spread and 3-1 with the over. Including the preseason, San Francisco is just 1-6-1 ATS in its last eight games.
San Francisco is averaging 25 points and 387.5 yards per game this year on offense. The unit didn’t look completely lost without Jimmy Garappolo last week in the loss to the Chargers. C.J. Beathard has thrown for 298 yards and two touchdowns in his place, as Jimmy G is out for the rest of the year. Matt Breida has emerged as the lead back for San Francisco. He has 313 yards and a score on 41 carries. Breida is dealing with a shoulder injury, but expected to play today. Defensively, the 49ers are giving up 29.5 points and 393 yards per game. Their pass defense ranks among the worst in the NFL right now, allowing 288.8 yards per game.
Cardinals struggling on offense
Arizona is off to an 0-4 start following a 20-17 loss to the Seahawks at home last week. The Cardinals are 2-2 against the spread, covering in their last two, while hitting the under in all four games this year.
The Cardinals have been absolutely putrid on offense this season. They are averaging just 9.3 points and 220.8 yards per game thus far. The rushing attack is putting up only 66.8 yards per game. David Johnson hasn’t gotten on track, as he has 187 rushing yards on 56 carries. Rookie quarterback Josh Rosen has thrown for 216 yards on 19 of 34 passing in limited action as the starter. Defensively, Arizona is allowing 23.5 points and 391.5 yards per game. Their run defense is allowing 141.3 yards per contest.
NFL Betting Trends
San Francisco
San Francisco is 4-12 ATS in their last 16 home games, but 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games against NFC West opponents.
Arizona
The Cardinals are 1-5 against the spread in their last 6 games in October and 2-7 ATS in their last nine road games.
Prediction:
Both teams are struggling, but the 49ers actually showed a little something last week against the Chargers. The offense wasn’t a total mess without their starting QB and now it returns home to face a team that has shown no offensive life through four games. Breida is a capable running back and should be the focus for the 49ers. I look for him to have a big game and lead San Francisco to the win and cover.
NFL Prediction: San Francisco 49ers -3
