Offseason Additions
The biggest move the Vikings made this offseason was signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to a massive free agent contract. They also brought in former Broncos signal-caller Trevor Siemian to be Cousins’ backup, signed receiver Kendall Wright, guard Tom Compton and added to their already stacked defensive line with the addition of tackle Sheldon Richardson.
In the draft, the Vikings took cornerback Mike Hughes, offensive tackle Brian O’Neill, defensive end Jayln Holmes, tight end Tyler Conlin and kicker Daniel Carlson.
Offseason Departures
In is Cousins, out is Case Keenum, who led the Vikings to an unexpected trip to the NFC Championship game before falling flat against the future Super Bowl champion Eagles. Keenum signed a free-agent deal with the Broncos while Teddy Bridgewater (Jets) and Sam Bradford (Cardinals) also left Minnesota via free agency.
Also gone is running back Jerick McKinnon, who signed with the 49ers. Michael Floyd and Jarius Wright are also gone, as well as Joe Berger, Tom Johnson, Shamar Stephen, Tramaine Brock and Marcus Sherels.
Minnesota Vikings Season Win Total Prediction
Cousins, who doesn’t get the credit he deserves as a quality starter despite posting good numbers, finally gets a top-five defense while head coach Mike Zimmer a high-priced quarterback in the prime of his career.
Cousins should enjoy working with new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, who learned under Doug Pederson and Frank Reich in Philadelphia. Carson Wentz was an MVP candidate last year before he tore his ACL late in the year. Cousins might not wind up being an MVP but he’s certainly set up for success.
This team is absolutely stacked defensively, they have an outstanding coaching staff led by Zimmer, they have an underrated quarterback and excellent skill position players that get a boost with the return of Dalvin Cook. This is a high number and the Vikings have a difficult schedule, but I’m not betting the under with a team as talented as this one.
