Diamondbacks vs. Padres Prediction
The Arizona Diamondbacks are surprisingly leading the NL West by 1.5 as they prepare to open a four-game series tonight at the last-place San Diego Padres. Will Arizona help itself keep a firm grip on first place or is San Diego going to win as the underdog?

Diamondbacks salvage split at Texas
Arizona claimed a 6-4 win Tuesday to split a quick two-game road series at the Rangers. Patrick Corbin earned the win as he allowed three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over seven innings. Brad Boxberger picked up his 27th save as he gave up one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk over one inning. Jon Jay helped pace the offense by going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs from the leadoff spot. Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with a solo home run. Steven Souza Jr. was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run. Ketel Marte finished 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs. Daniel Descalso ended the game 1-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Nick Ahmed was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Alex Avila finished 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk.
Padres swept at home by Angels
San Diego was swept at home in a three-game interleague series against Los Angeles, falling 3-2 last night. Cory Spangenberg led the way as he was 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks. Travis Jankowski finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Wil Myers went 1-for-3 plus a walk. Hunter Renfroe was 0-for-3, but did record an RBI. Kirby Yates suffered the loss in relief as he allowed one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts in one inning of work.
Clay Buchholz (5-2, 2.67 ERA) will start today for the D-backs, while Jacob Nix (1-0, 0.00) makes his second career MLB start for the Padres.
MLB Betting Trends
Arizona
The under is 6-2-1 in the last nine Diamondbacks games overall. The over is 6-2-1 in the last nine Arizona road games.
San Diego
The Padres are 6-20 in their last 26 home games. San Diego is 14-37 in its last 51 games overall.
Prediction:
Buchholz has been a revelation for the D-backs, but it still seems he might be headed for some regression. While the Padres don't have a strong offense, they've had their moments the last few weeks. Nix was very sharp in his MLB debut as he tossed six shutout innings against the Phillies. I say he out-pitches Buchholz at home tonight and leads the Padres to a win.
