Orioles' Cobb ekes out quality start vs. Rays

Alex Cobb was credited with a quality start Thursday against the Rays, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits over six innings in a loss. Cobb's outing Thursday was a good argument against the merits of calling it a "quality" start, as there wasn't a whole lot of quality to it. Even so, you won't hear Cobb or the Orioles complain, given his struggles this year. Even with the quality outing, the 30-year-old fell to 2-14 with a 6.08 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 19 starts on the year. Things don't get any easier for Cobb on Wednesday when the O's visit the Yankees in New York.

Yankees' Gray shuts out Royals over five innings

Sonny Gray tossed five scoreless innings in a win over the Royals on Thursday. Gray has now turned in three straight good outings -- and, not coincidentally, three consecutive wins -- after scattering three hits and two walks over his five frames. He was also aided by five strikeouts. Perhaps Gray has found something, or perhaps he's benefited from pitching against inferior competition -- his wins have come against the Orioles, Mets and Royals, three bottom-dwellers -- but whatever the case, he's worth a flyer in deeper leagues for his win potential and upside, given past success. Another attractive matchup with the aforementioned Orioles is on tap for Gray on Wednesday.

MLB Betting Trends

Baltimore

The Orioles are 1-4 in Cobb's last five road starts and are 3-16 in his last 19 outings overall.

New York

The Yankees have won six of Gray's last eight starts versus an opponent with a losing record.

Prediction:

Game 1 pushed on the total after the Orioles scratched across three runs in the top of the 8th inning to bury what looked to be a solid under play for bettors. As for tonight, I like the over. In the last 30 meetings between these two teams, the over is 25-4-1. In the last 21 meetings at Yankee Stadium, the over is 18-3. Finally, the over is 10-3 in Gray's last 13 home starts, is 3-1-1 in his last five outings against the Orioles, and is 5-1 in the Orioles' last six road games.

The Pick: Orioles/Yankees Over 9
