The Mariners enter the second year of a full rebuild and oddsmakers have set their win total at 68 heading into 2020. Can they get over that total or is the under the better play?

According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Sportsbook.com, the Mariners’ win total for 2020 has been set at 68. The juice isn’t shaded to either the over or the under, as both carry odds of 20/23, respectively.

Mariners Offseason Moves

The Mariners had one of the quietest offseasons of any team in Major League Baseball and one of the quietest offseasons since Jerry Dipoto took over as the team’s general manager. That said, it was expected that Seattle wouldn’t make many moves. The Mariners sent out to improve their farm system and they’ve done that, ranking inside the top 10 according to most publications. If that talent develops, the M’s will be a contender sooner rather than later.

As for this offseason, the Mariners traded Omar Narvaez as they attempt to put a premium on defense at the catcher position. (Some criticized Seattle for not getting more for the offensive-minded backstop.) The team also signed former Cubs relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr.

This is only Year 2 of Dipoto’s rebuilding plan so there will be more downs than ups again for the Mariners this season. They have some intriguing young talent in Daniel Vogelbach, Austin Nola, J.P. Crawford and Mallex Smith, as well as some key veterans in Kyle Seager, Mitch Haniger and Dee Gordon (although those three could be traded by the deadline). The problem is their pitching. Marco Gonzales was good last year, but he’s not close to being an ace on a contender. Justus Sheffield is still an intriguing player but may have been overrated as a prospect, while the bullpen is a total question mark, which is never a good sign for a team. Ultimately, I expect the Mariners to hit plenty of home runs but also give up plenty of runs in a lot of losing efforts.
