Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
Covers.com

Anaheim at Los Angeles (+125, 5)

A pair of 0-2 teams take to the ice tonight to finally to get in the win column.  The Kings were expected to start things out 0-2 by losing a home and home series against the Sharks, so no real shock there.  The Ducks on the other hand, lost to the Sharks on the road, no shock but they were outplayed badly the last two periods and then they lose to Phoenix at their home opener.

This time of year you really can’t go by current stats unless something glaring stands out. With the Sharks causing three of these teams’ four losses it makes things even tougher.  The Kings have only scored once in the two games against the Sharks and only took a total of 34 shots for both games.

The Ducks are coming out of the gate slowly just like last year, but the effort is there.  They have had an average of 32 shots per game, so the real problem has been in goal with JS-Giguere having a horrible .877 save percentage.  Last year the Ducks won the series with a 6-2 record and the OU went 3-5.  I look for a lower scoring game here, but with the Ducks taking it.

Pick: Ducks

Columbus at San Jose (-220, 5)

Columbus is coming off a 2-1 loss at Phoenix after winning a thrilling 5-4 OT game in Dallas with seconds left.  They were ripe for a letdown game in Phoenix, but you have to wonder if it was a let-down game or just the usual horrible road effort from the Jackets, who will now be without Micheal Peca after he was suspended indefinitely for bumping an official in the Dallas game.

The Sharks have a 3-0 start to the season by beating the Kings twice and the Ducks. Last year these teams hooked up for four games with the Sharks taking the series 3-1 and the OU going 1-2-1.  The Jackets just don’t have the guns to hang with the Sharks.  Now anything can happen on any day, but the Sharks are healthy, playing well and getting great goaltending.  Don’t forget the teams they have beaten, so you might not read much into it. But take the Sharks and lay the -1.5.  Because you sure don’t want to lay the -230 unless you are parlaying it or have a place to play the -1 line.

Pick: Sharks

Hockey Today

SCOREBOARD

Tuesday, Oct. 14

Columbus at San Jose (10:30 p.m. EDT). The Sharks have allowed two goals while opening the season with three wins.

STARS

— Aaron Voros, Rangers, had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over New Jersey.

— Roman Hamrlik and Michael Komisarek, Canadiens. Hamrlik and Komisarek scored 44 seconds apart in the third period to help Montreal rally for a 5-3 victory at Philadelphia.

— Alexander Semin and Michael Nylander, Capitals. Semin scored twice and Nylander netted a penalty shot in Washington’s 5-1 victory over Vancouver.

— Thomas Vanek, Sabres, scored twice in a 7-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

STAYING UNBEATEN

Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and two assists, and linemate Aaron Voros had two goals and three points while pestering Martin Brodeur in the Rangers’ 4-1 victory over the Devils on Monday night. The Rangers improved to 5-0, matching the team’s best start established in 1983.

SHOOTOUTS

Andy McDonald and Brad Boyes scored in a shootout as St. Louis completed a comeback from a 3-0 deficit and beat Toronto 5-4 on Monday night. Tomas Kaberle, Nikolai Kulemin and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored in the first period for the Maple Leafs. Boyes had the Blues’ first goal 33 seconds into the second period, and Patrik Berglund and Keith Tkachuk got power-play goals 48 seconds apart a few minutes later to tie the score. Niklas Hagman regained Toronto’s lead later in the second period, but Paul Kariya tied it again at 4:21 of the third. … Rich Peverley and J.P Dumont scored in the shootout to lift Nashville to a 3-2 victory at Chicago. Shea Weber and Kevin Klein scored in regulation and Dan Ellis stopped 23 shots for the Predators. Ellis stopped Patrick Kane and Martin Havlat in the shootout to secure the win.

BARELY TESTED

Washington goalie Brent Johnson had to make only nine saves in a 5-1 victory over Vancouver on Monday night. The Capitals broke their franchise record by limiting the Canucks to a total of 10 shots. Vancouver totaled 11 goals in its previous two games, both victories over Calgary, but managed only two shots in the first period against Washington, one in the second, and seven in the third. The Cancuks’ Roberto Luongo made 20 saves through the first two periods an backup Curtis Sanford stopped all 10 he faced in the third.

SAVES

St. Louis’ Manny Legace stopped 35 shots through overtime in a 5-4 victory at Toronto on Monday. … Carolina’s Cam Ward made 33 saves in a 3-1 loss at Detroit.

SIDELINED

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jack Johnson will miss up to three months because of a shoulder injury from Sunday’s 1-0 loss to San Jose. Johnson was hit hard late in the first period and took a single shift in the second period before leaving the game.

SAD NEWS

Alexei Cherepanov, a 19-year-old first-round draft pick of the Rangers, died Monday during a Continental Hockey League game in Russia. Former Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr played a shift with Cherepanov and was talking to his young Avangard Omsk teammate on the bench shortly after they left the ice, when Cherepanov suddenly collapsed. There was no collision that preceded the collapse, a Rangers spokesman said, but few other details were available. Cherepanov scored the first goal of the game and had eight in 15 contests this season, his third with Avangard Omsk.

GOING STRONG

The NHL is “still in growth mode” despite the economic downturn, commissioner Gary Bettman said Monday, noting that ticket sales have increased this season. Season-ticket sales are 4 percent higher than a year ago, and single-game tickets were up nearly 13 percent as of a week ago, Bettman noted, calling that data “remarkable—if not startling—numbers, in light of what we hear is going on.” Bettman emphasized the need to be cautious moving forward and said the NHL will closely monitor revenues and expenses.

SPEAKING

“After the first five minutes, we were just all over them. They couldn’t get out of their zone. We do that to every team, and it’s going to be tough to get in our zone and put any pressure on us.”—Washington goalie Brent Johnson, after facing just 10 shots in a 5-1 victory over Vancouver on Monday night.
