Irish give Kelly a new deal
After a successful 2015 season that saw a lot of injuries, Notre Dame has elected to give Brian Kelly a new deal as head coach.
The school announced on Friday that the two have reached an agreement on a 6-year deal through the 2021 season. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
“In the classroom, in the community and on the playing field, Brian has built the foundation of a great Notre Dame football program — one that reflects this university’s values and its unique relationship to the game of football,” Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick said.
According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, Notre Dame is currently listed with 17/1 odds to win the College Football Playoffs. Alabama is the current favorite at +475, while Clemson and Oklahoma each have a +750 line.
Notre Dame is coming off a 10-3 season with losses to Clemson and Stanford by two points each. The Irish also suffered a 44-28 loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. The team was plagued by injuries all season, losing their starting running back and quarterback early in the year. Kelly is 55-23 in his six seasons at Notre Dame, winning at least 8 games in every season. Kelly is now set to become the second-longest coach in Notre Dame history. He would pass three coaches, including Lou Holtz, who were with the program for 11 seasons.
