Will Matz, Mets mow down Braves today?
Steven Matz’s 2016 debut featured very little of the sizzle that accompanied the New York phenom’s big-league arrival last summer. The second time around, though, showed such promise in spades.
The lefty hopes for more of the same success in his third assignment, which comes at 7:10 p.m. ET against the Braves. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI lean toward the visitors in this spot. The Mets are 1.5-run favorites, with an over/under run total of 7.5.
Terry Collins’ club captured its fourth victory in five games on Friday, using a Curtis Granderson grand slam and Matt Harvey’s steadiness on the mound to clobber hapless Atlanta. Tonight, the ball slides to the immensely talented Matz. He bounced back from getting gouged for seven runs on April 11 by fanning nine in last weekend’s 6-0 win at Cleveland.
Fredi Gonzalez counters with Jhoulys Chacin in hopes of avoiding a fourth consecutive defeat. The righty hurled six scoreless frames against Washington to kick off the year, then permitted just four hits in the Braves’ 6-5 decision over Miami last Sunday. Chacin is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in four career starts vs. New York.

With Collins’ offense heating up, however, it’s not a particularly great time to draw such an assignment. The Mets boast 21 homers in the past seven games. Moreover, they’ve won six of eight on the road and five straight at Turner Field. Those trends won’t stop here.
