NASHVILLE, TN (The Spread) – According to a report by FOX Sports’ Alex Marvez, Marcus Mariota is likely haggling with the Titans over offset language.
Mariota is the only player from the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft that remains unsigned. All rookie contracts are slotted based on which pick the player was in the draft and Mariota is expected to receive roughly $21 million over four years according to Marvez.
That said, if the Titans were to release Mariota before the fourth year and he joined a new team, the offset clauses would come into play. The Titans wouldn’t be responsible for paying Mariota the remaining money on his contract, which in turn prevents the quarterback from “double-dipping” with a new team.
There’s little doubt that the Titans will get Mariota under contract, although the offset language in the deal appears to be holding things up for the moment. According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, the Titans are currently 200/1 to win the 2016 Super Bowl.
