Houston at UTEP
Preseason polls showed UTEP and Houston as the favorites to win the Conference USA championship this year.
On Saturday, those two will meet when the Miners host the No. 12 Cougars at 9PM ET from Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars are 3-0 on the year and perhaps the most surprising team in the country. Houston upset Oklahoma State three weeks ago 45-35, and followed that win up last week with a 29-28 win over Texas Tech. Houston quarterback Case Keenum has built a nice Heisman campaign thus far, throwing for 1,160 yards and eight touchdowns while also rushing for three scores. Keenum has three receivers with over 200 yards, led by Charles Sims, who has 21 receptions for 296 yards. The Cougars rank first in Conference USA in points per-game, yards per-game, and passing yards. On defense, Houston is led by Houston leads the conference passing defense despite having just one interception.
UTEP had high hopes this season, but is off to a 1-3 start with its lone win coming against New Mexico State. The Miners are coming off a 64-7 loss at Texas last weekend, where the Longhorns racked up 639 yards of offense while UTEP had just 53 yards of offense. UTEP has been led by Trevor Vittatoe, who has thrown for 640 yards, but has one touchdown pass to five interceptions. Donald Buckram has 298 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the year, but the Miners offense still ranks among the worst in the conference in points, yards, and rushing yards. On defense, UTEP is among the bottom half of the conference in points allowed, yards allowed, and rushing yards allowed.
