DETROIT (AP) -Red Wings forward Kirk Maltby has been placed on long-term injured reserve and will have right shoulder surgery that will sideline him for four to six weeks.
Detroit also activated defenseman Andreas Lilja (LIL’-yeh) from injured reserve Thursday. The nine-year NHL veteran is expected to make his season debut Monday against the Colorado Avalanche.
The 37-year-old Maltby is in his 14th season with the Red Wings and 16th in the NHL. The four-time Stanley Cup champion has six points and 32 penalty minutes in 52 games this season.
The 34-year-old Lilja has been on injured reserve since sustaining a concussion in a Feb. 28, 2009, game against Nashville. He had no points and six penalty minutes in a recent four-game conditioning stint with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey league.
