PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Flyers coach Peter Laviolette will get another chance to win a Stanley Cup with the Flyers.
General manger Paul Homgren says Laviolette will return for a fifth season. Laviolette’s performance was under scrutiny for most of the lockout-shortened season. The Flyers defense was decimated by injuries and overall inconsistent play doomed the team.
The Flyers went 23-22-3 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Laviolette just finished his fourth season as coach and led the Flyers to the 2010 Eastern Conference championship.
Laviolette took over for John Stevens early in the 2009 season and helped the Flyers clinch a playoff berth on the final day. From there, the Flyers went all the way to the finals, before losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.
Laviolette has also coached the New York Islanders and Carolina. He won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006.
