The Capitals are the No. 1 seed out of the Eastern Conference while the Canadiens come in as the No. 8 seed. Washington is an overwhelming favorite to win this opening series.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL have given Washington a betting line of -700 to win this series while Montreal has been given a +450 line.
The Washington Capitals come into the playoffs with 121 points, more than any other NHL team. Washington racked up 54 wins to earn the Southeast Division championship. The Capitals also scored a league-high 318 goals while allowing just 233. The Capitals finished the year by winning six of their last 10 with three of the four losses coming in overtime or in a shootout. Washington has one conference championship to its credit, which it won in 1998. The Capitals have never won the Stanley Cup.
Montreal comes into the playoffs with 88 points, which ties for the fewest of any playoff team. The Canadiens won 39 games and scored 217 goals while allowed 223. Montreal won just three of its final 10 games heading into the playoffs. Montreal has won 24 Stanley Cups, with the last coming in 1993. They have also earned eight conference championships, with the last also coming in 1993.
