VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -Former Indianapolis Colts defensive back Dexter Reid was acquitted Wednesday of a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and convicted of a drug charge.
Reid pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, prosecutor Sara Chandler said. Sentencing was set for April 22 in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.
The felony carries a punishment of one to 10 years in prison. However, defense attorney James O. Broccoletti said he would ask the judge to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor, which carries a sentence of up to a year, because there was no intention to sell the marijuana.
Reid pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor concealed weapon charge, and Judge H. Thomas Padrick Jr. found him not guilty.
Reid was arrested in March after police stopped his car on suspicion of drunken driving. Reid was not charged with drunken driving. According to testimony at Reid’s preliminary hearing, an officer found a handgun and about 3 ounces of marijuana packaged in several small containers.
The New England Patriots drafted Reid in the fourth round in 2004. He was part of the Patriots’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2005 and earned a ring with the Colts last year. Indianapolis released him shortly after February’s Super Bowl win.
