Iowa Hawkeyes Game Notes
Iowa backup right guard Beau Stephens missed last weekend’s game against Utah State with an undisclosed injury. He’s officially listed as questionable for Saturday’s contest in Ames against Iowa State. Iowa has already lost defensive lineman Noah Shannon for the season due to a gambling suspension, and they may also lose wide receiver Jack Johnson due to the same issue. Johnson didn’t play last week and may sit again as he’s waiting to see if the NCAA is going to suspend him for breaking the organization’s rules against gambling.

Iowa State Cyclones Game Notes
Iowa State tight end DeShawn Hanika is suspended for the entire season due to gambling infractions and his NCAA eligibility has been suspended indefinitely. He may never play college football again. Two other Iowa State players are also facing possible gambling-related suspensions: running back Jirehl Brock and defensive lineman Isaiah Lee. Both players sat out last week’s win over Northern Iowa and both players are questionable for Saturday’s tilt against Iowa. Brock led the Cyclones in rushing last season with 445 yards, and Lee had 22 total tackles in 10 games for Iowa State last season.

Iowa vs. Iowa State Betting Prediction
Both Iowa and Iowa State were hit hard by suspensions related to sports gambling this past offseason. The Cyclones even lost their starting quarterback in Hunter Dekkers. Iowa on the other hand was able to add a good quarterback in former Michigan Wolverine Cade McNamara. McNamara looked good in the Hawkeyes’ opening-week win over Utah State as he completed 17 of 30 passes for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns. Most critically, McNamara didn’t throw any interceptions or fumble as the Hawkeyes won the turnover battle 1-0 and the game 24-14.
The problem with Iowa was always the offense. The Hawkeyes’ defense has been quite good for a while as they only allowed 0.199 points per play last season, a figure that ranked 1st in the nation. Now the Hawkeyes should be in better shape on offense. Iowa now has a decent quarterback and their offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz signed a revised contract. His new deal requires the Hawkeyes to average 25 points per game and win 7 games this season in order for him to keep his job as the offensive coordinator. We’ve seen Big Ten coaches like Jim Harbaugh succeed when they’ve had performance incentives written into their contracts, and I could see Brian Ferentz and his offense meeting his contractual goals. In what could be a big year for Iowa, I have them winning the Cy-Hawk Trophy by 5 points or more on Saturday.
