TUCSON, AZ (TheSpread) – Looking to avoid a repeat of last year, the Temple Owls seek to win their March Madness opener on Thursday when they take on Penn State in the West Region.

Temple is the 7th seed in the West while Penn State comes in as the 10th seed. This game takes place at 2:10PM ET on Thursday from the McKale Center.
Accoding to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog.com have Temple as a 2.5-point spread favorite against Penn State on Thursday. The over/under total has been set at 120.5 points.
Temple went 25-7 during the season but was just 2-3 on a neutral floor. The Owls covered the spread in 17 of 32 games and hit the over in 17 of 31 lined games. Temple went 14-2 in the Atlantic 10 and four of their seven losses were by single digits. Temple averages 70.9 points per game and give up 62.2 points per contest. The Owls have a balanced attack with five guys averaging double figures in points. Lavoy Allen leads the team with 11.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
Penn State went 19-14 during the season and 3-1 on a neutral floor. The Nittany Lions were 16-11-2 against the spread and they went under the point total in 16 of 29 lined games. PSU went 9-9 in Big Ten play and lost in the conference tournament championship. PSU beat four ranked teams during the season, but 9 of their 14 losses were by 10 points or more. The Nittany Lions average just 63 points per game and allow 62.4 points per contest. Talor Battle leads the team as the guard averages 20.1 points per game.
Trends show that Penn State is 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 games as an underdog while Temple is 21-8 ATS in their last 29 games following a loss.
In terms of injuries, both teams have a hefty injury report. Penn State forward Andrew Jones is probable because of a mouth injury while Temple forward Scootie Randall is probable with a foot injury.
